  1. Was going to say, HMRC rate is the expected fuel + depreciation + maintenance cost per mile - expenses - so a minimum rate. Short trips towing around an estate will be more expensive than a 200 mile motorway journey of course
  2. ... or only take the classic cars out mid summer when the lawn is hard and there is no need for a paved drive... A lot of other people would... Council have the last word so might be more inclined to use their suggestion - however you can always phone them up, talk it through with them rather than just what comes via a letter
  3. Yes but that doesn't sit well with his attempts to politicise this thread.
  4. Ahhh... the hard of understanding. Noting my comments do not refer to any criminals of any nationalities, or their crimes, just your preference to report ONLY those of the Muslim faith or non-white. Why do you only report those criminals on a website aimed at Arboculture?
  5. No, you ONLY comment on coloured or Muslim criminals and never white Christians and that is the basis of your racism. All nationalities of all religions commit all crimes... but you only appear to get enraged by one portion of society committing them. Why is that?
  6. Back to your casual racism then? It was quite pleasant on this thread without that however, free world, free speech and all that. "Facts"... lets look back at all the posts you have made highlighting criminals to see and see how many of them are about skin coloured people of the 'pale northern European variety"... fact of the matter is there are none and the fact is that you only comment on those that appear to be non-European or a non-Christian religion. Think those are the facts that YoungStu refers to, sorry if that doesn't suit but they are at the end of the day "Facts".
  7. At the moment office stuff, but the numbers above are the sort of values they play with on their projects (I'm sure the last 'job' I mentioned was Monday nights in the club doing something odd)
  8. I forget the numbers but my work runs on about 12% to 15% return on capital invested, I might be wrong but that gives them a payback time on capital investment of 6 to 8 years - your 3/4 years might be a bit quick?
  9. Not sure about this one but is the back door attached to an extension? A few posts I've read about extensions having poorer foundations than the main house, and being positioned nearer existing trees than the main house... and the extension suffers (main house is OK though). Might be worth recording the condition of any brickwork you are worried about before she starts the work if it goes ahead (bearing in mind Stubbys TPO comment), plus internal décor and so on - just in case
  10. 15 year old lad just learning to climb trees and is operating a chainsaw up there... 'no photographs' is to cover his back - nothing illegal about taking photos in a public place. Your neighbour contracted (?) them so the waste is their responsibility regardless as whose tree it came from. They have to offer you the branches back but you don't have to accept of course, tell him to get Mr Tree to come back and finish the job professionally and clear up afterwards? Odd though, MR Tree from Lancashire is a "friendly and approachable company". His terms and conditions include this gem: 12. The site will be left generally ‘clean, tidy and safe’ but because of the very nature of the works including the production of wood dust from chainsaw / wood chippings / twigs / leaves and needles etc. and the traversing of site personnel, in extreme circumstances it may not be as it was prior to the commencement of works. Which sounds like your neighbour could withhold final payment till clause 12 is completed satisfactorily.

    Lidl 53cc saw

I reckon the supermarket things are a 50-50 good-bad mix (see my post about chain sharpeners). Looking at the market, £80 / £60 / 100 euro saw is for domestic one-off job I think, probably works well for that. Let us know what you think though (mind, chinesium bar and chain, plus 'made in Germany' chain oil, + delivery, £25? of consumables to stash in the shed after the year is up)
  12. I heard a tale once that propeller airplanes were getting past a modern aircraft carriers defences easily, they anti-aircraft defences were built around attacks at twice the speed and couldn't cope with a slow moving plane... maybe something the same here that Ukraine defences are not quite expecting 75 year old technology? However... suspect using up old stuff first
  13. Market rates and expenses... a yard in London, congestion charges, ULEZ... and expensive logs, cheaper land in the highlands, lower cost of living and wages makes logs cheaper there.
  14. Travelling tree cutters with a mobile number only on the side of their white van? Those cuts look a bit butchered and not done with much pride in their work. Still..... Infection depends I think if there is any local to you. Probably OK to have pruned it just now - better minds might correct me in due course
  15. Is the house a fairly new build - looking at the photos I am guessing that but might be wrong. Occasionally the builders - usually being conscientious and all that - by mistake scrape off all the top top soil to leave a nice flat garden - scrapped right back to the clay underneath and next to no drainage? Just a thought you might want to consider some organic matter around them to improve that a touch. If you decide to replace the tree then perhaps spend some time improving the soil organically and drainage if my guess is right. Having said that, as above those top 3 or 4 branches might be on the way out? leaving you with just the 2 limbs lower down? It probably isn't going to be a pretty tree... but if you want a tree that is purely for looks than get a plastic one... Looks an OK distance away from the other tree - mine in the front are about 5m apart and both fruit well.
  16. Politically if it was a 'western' nation (European then) 600k of losses would be the end of it unless you'd been invaded... however if you control the media and operate in a democracy where one-man-one-vote and the president is that one-man it comes down to resources I think... and to that I am not sure... suspect Russia will stop 'invading' as much and consolidating while they rearm over the winter with a spring offensive next year at least.
  17. Got that... somewhere... Job 0.5 though is a decent 'blacksmiths' vice. I think mounting this is definitely one for the pottering thread though!
  18. I went for it at the weekend and got one, not used it yet though.... have to make some space n the work bench (job 563 on the list)
  19. Taking dog to work... remember to ask the land owner if it is OK to have the dog there too... (similarly if working in an office - and some take their dogs in, check with your colleagues too... allergies and so on)
  20. They're social animals, I reckon penned up all day and they are not socialised. If you choose the right breed maybe not so bad... but the types featured on ArbDogs... they need to be out and about. Dog walker is 1 hour out of 8 or 9.... Also consider effective recall training else walk them on the leads everywhere there are things they might want to chase (rabbits, birds, horses and sheep, toddlers, children on bikes, runners, cyclists, postmen... some dogs are better than others). I know a few guys desperate for another dog but with both of the couple working the well being of the dog takes precedence
  21. might be worth keeping an eye on the employment section of this forum too - give a small indication on the state of the job market... but of course only a few out of all the jobs are on there
  22. So this week Lidl have a parkside chain sharpener in at £20... is it worth a looking at? My thoughts are that the discount supermarkets have a 50-50 hit rate of decent tool / throw it out, all this is a motor on an axis really so the electrics should land it in the decent side of life, but will the angles and bearings might be a bit rubbish? I've found that their motors tend to be decent enough, it is the housings that let them down generally or a specific size leading to a lack of consumables. Second thought is that it might be fine for domestic use - which is me - but maybe not pro use Last thought is the chains they are designed for - assuming it biased towards the domestic market, the cut will be biased towards the smaller chains (again which is me) - the oregon chains that are on everything 'Big shop' night tomorrow so will make my mind up by then
  23. We used them at the museum, Motorola ones and pretty bombproof, dry them out and good to go again after they went swimming. The ones I had had a call button - a ring tone - that was good for getting attention at the other radio - if you go free to air radios then a call button is good but the range is only a couple of km
  24. More photos: Depends when the camera car went past you might be able to get them off a streetview website
  25. Nice house. Garage in an extension? If so you can add another 3m from the tree to the main part of the house? Not a lot I know. If it has been there a while then I'd guess that as it currently is it won't affect much. Good idea about insurance quotes. Leaves... a leaf blower is a small cost if you like the house as is a ladder to clear the gutters (or gutter guards + a ladder)
