Tidy set up, are you running some kind of extraction system with that ?? The Trakmet tends to throw dust everywhere including on me, doesn’t matter how hard I try to set up with the wind at my back it just seems that site layout etc dictates otherwise.

The individual in question totally regretted the decision, that’s first hand experience of the whole twisted system. The ones fighting it are promoting it 🤷‍♂️and offer the service no doubt at huge cost to the NHS to facilitate it.

Yeah that’s correct it has to be back at front and the two spring loaded poles engaged on the strips etc to power the 12v system. Shuttle valves were suggested by one of engineers onboard the vessel im on but he asked about frequency of use etc ie it’s better if they are in use regularly 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️I’ve no idea if that’s correct but all this is in the planning and procurement stage so all input is good 👍.

12v system can and will be switched off when petrol motor is running. The high pressure filter was an idea based upon past experience with a pump that failed and fired a load of shrapnel through the system on a mini digger I had but it’s optional, one on return side is definitely going to be fitted. One of main reasons for going this route is the ability to use the hydraulics other than when head is back and connections to alternator/12v systems are engaged. I’ve been caught out a couple of times with that and also with big Elm/Ash/Oak etc it gives the the 12v system a hell of a lot to do.

No it’s just me using it and I’ll be labelling it up to try and keep it looking reasonably factory spec. Admittedly valve positioning by people can go wrong. Testing one of the back up systems on this job and all the valves bar one were in the correct position, the one that wasn’t dead headed the system blowing the return line and spewing about 20 gallon of hyd oil onto the deck.

Thanks for the input.yeah there is a prv on the existing block, non return valves are an option and would do same job but do occasionally pass a bit. I use kit quite often with a secondary or back up power source and this often entails throwing a couple of valves into position, keeps it nice and simple too.

Hi All Got the engineering guy on nights here to knock up this to show the proposed layout for upgrading the hydraulics on the mill. 12v system is in place, GX and pump are sourced as are return and pressure line filters etc. Just wondering if anyone with any hydraulics knowledge can see anything fundamentally wrong with the layout ??. No I didn’t think you were, just pointing out its built like a tank and little bit more weight shouldn’t be an issue.

Twin axle chassis set up rated for 2000kg each Mill is running at 3t ish, Honda GX motor and new pump plus odds and sods will add 70kg tops. If you’ve ever seen the Trakmet mills close up you’ll know they tend not to worry too much about weight when building them.

We have 3 position valves on a lot of the kit offshore to facilitate back up hydraulics on some essential bits of kit being used. Not sure if shuttle is the correct term but we just refer to them as 3 ways 🤷‍♂️. Fundamentals of the plan are found I think, just hoping a hydraulic guru might have had some input.

Hi All Looking to fit a secondary hydraulic supply to my Trakmet mill. The existing 12v powered system is fine for every day use but when dealing with oversize stuff I feel it’s probably low on power. The system is rated for far more according to Trakmet as it’s the same that’s on the 3 phase static models apart from the motor used to power it. Looking to weld an extra connection onto the existing steel tank to feed a petrol powered hydraulic pump that matches the manufactures flow and pressure specs on the 3 phase models ( Which ive tested and are far quicker and stronger)An extra filter will be fitted on the return side from the control block and looking at 3 way valves to switch over supplies from the 12v system to the petrol hyd pack as and when required. All this will be mounted within the chassis rails at front in amongst the existing hyd systems location. Any advice on likely issues or if I’m totally on the wrong tack would be appreciated. Cheers

Yeah I know it’s not cheap. I’m happy with the standard Alaskans Saul, Trakmet will do a 1.2m diameter log so the 880 doesn’t get much use at min which was a factor in why I didn’t go forward with sorting the Panther. To be honest to manufacture the mill to a standard that it had no lash in gears etc or movement anywhere would probs result in it being twice the weight and cost. The guy who’s mill I was using is working for a firm doing decommissioning in the N Sea using ROV deployed diamond wire and abrasive cutting systems so with my background etc we maybe tend to look at the engineering on things with a slightly more critical eye. like I’ve said it’s not really criticism as such it just wasn’t the direction I wanted to go ie fettling something at the time. I’m not adverse to that and currently have a list of mods I want to do on the Trakmet mill to improve things as I see it, some involving pretty extensive fabrication etc.

Saul’s words bud “cutting edge” at £600 ish or whatever it was you can justifiably expect most problems to have been ironed out in the R&D process. As an aside if I’d kept it I’d have drilled the long upper tube and used roll pins rather than grub screws as a solution.
