  1. Thanks stars cream, last 2 days so in total about 12 hours
  2. I was asked to carve a small Dragon and Chough in order to represent the bird on the Flintshire Flag and Flintshire being part of Wales, represented by the dragon. I carved it from what was in my head but, yet again, I have been throwing the paint around for the fangs, eyes etc then four coats of Tung oil to finish. Just thought I would post it on here as this is my first dragon.
  3. I used dark oak woodstain on the main body, tung oil around the nose and mouth, but needed the paint for the finer characteristics. Thanks everyone for your continued comments
  4. Thanks everyone for all the comments, I delivered Gruffalo last Friday to the playgroup and the kids were over the moon, commenting on the orange eyes so I think in this case it may have worked. I have just carved a dragon ..... Gues what...... I painted the eyes and tongue !!!! I'm doomed I will post a new thread for the dragon when it's finished.
  5. Thanks to you all for the feedback, if a 2 yr old recognises it as Gruffalo then my day is complete Dervish I understand what you mean for the kiddies, the visual impact has to represent how they see it on tv or is it iPads these days I'm delivering it on Monday so I will let you know what the verdict is.
  6. Just a pic of a carving that I was asked to do for a kiddies playgroup, head and shoulders of the Gruffalo, 26 ins high and 18 ins wide. I end d up having to paint some of the features in order to ensure it met the expectations of the kiddies. I'm not sure about painting a carving and was wondering what the carvers out there feel about.
  7. I use a dewalt 18v drill on mid speed, it works well and doesn't tear the abrasive paper so much either
  8. Very nice work, the work gone into he leaves needs recognition also .... Nice one
  9. That's a cool design , did you use a harrycane Si
  10. Excellent piece
  11. I buy them from the this company, all shapes and sizes but all manufactured by Sabtuur Woodworks Craft Supplies They are about £16
  12. That is a cool tool, worth a stab at making I think
  13. Nice piece again Simon
  14. Thanks Shaun, those are the ones I bought in the end, they work very well other than loosing signal occasionally but it's only seconds ... A very good ear defender generally and very robust. I paid £89 for my set with batteries
  15. Superb carving carving Shaun....
  16. Excellent Shaun .... The characteristics of the fox are outstanding
  17. Very nice work
  18. Nice piece Simon, is it an off cut are have you split a log and used one half .... It's called a woodspirit here in Wales also ...
  19. Now that is awesome....I'm going to save them pics if I may. Do you carve with the image in your head or use pictures. Excellent piece though and something to aspire too for me I think.
  20. Thanks Ukulian, I would appreciate a pic of the finished carving, did you use a cherry picker, makes my stump look like a sapling Kind regards Ian
  21. Thanks Tony, sounds like you had more challenges with your carving than I did ..... I just looked at your post, good money for a weekends carving , nice one. Take care Ian
  22. Thanks Simon, that means a lot coming from you and I take on board what you say. I had to use scaffolding and that alone caused me problems as it was always in the wrong place... I did learn a lot from carving this stump and it's difficult position so that alone was priceless.
  23. Thanks TTS North I'm glad you like it...
  24. Hello All Just finished this carving today, a 15ft trunk, it's my first stump carving of this size so I'm just looking for comments good and bad so I can learn and improve. The owner was happy so that was a good start I suppose
  25. Now there's a piece of carving to raise the bar even further.... I think I will log my current totem pole Excellent inspiring piece of art
