1. Looking good! Judging by the mess yo must have 'hand crafted' it in your living room!?
 2. Alot of big numbers being posted on here, but in my experience reality is a bit more down to earth. Short term jobs then £120s do exist, but realistically for longer term contracts (talking several months) a good competent cutter with EFAW, CS31&32 own saws etc registered self-employed £100 is the best you can hope for. MEWP tickets dont have much use in commercial forestry... FMO's a different story but then that's not a cutters rate!
 3. Just out of interest, was there a reason you couldn't use a couple of High-lifts and fell it whole tree?
 4. Looks identical to the clutch assembly in my 560 but without checking the dimensions I couldn't say for sure. Pretty sure the crank is the same diameter on both the 550 & 560. Your dealer should be able to replace all three springs (about £3 each) which is cheaper than £24 for a whole new assembly! Speaks a man who has been in your situation!
 5. Arb or forestry, when explaining im a hand cutter not a tree surgeon I use the comparison of Vets & Doctors, similar, but vastly different really. As for sharpening & cuts, Its my fuel im burning so a sharp chain is essential if it gives me 5 mins more cutting per tank- not to mention being easier on the arms! When it comes to cuts all you have to do is look at the 'rate my hinge' thread. Alot of Arb guys with 30 inch bars felling 30 inch trees.... get a forester and usually it'l be a bore and sweep with an 18inch bar!
 6. I've had a pair of Stein explorers doing comercial forestry and they've lasted a good two years- granted the last 6 months they let the water in like a sieve but considering the work the've done for £150 well worth the money. Super glue and dubbin are work boots best friends!
 7. Dont know about milling but felling the stuff is pretty prickly, adding to the fun is there is usually enough sweat and sap sticking them to everything
 8. As a subbie with minimal outputs i am happy to wait month (or even longer) if it means better money when it comes
 9. Your local dealer should stock 20/25litre drums and is probably as cheap as online. If you dont mind running another then Oregon for Newsawchains.co.uk @ £57/25litres.
 10. Cleaning!? Serious!? Grow a pair.
 11. More likely forgotten forever!
 12. Iv also a big Monkey Puzzle stick coming down. Its standing dead but 24inch plus at the butt. Aberdeenshire.
 13. And comes with a mystery green container! Bonus
 14. So Power-weight aside, when you've got a big larch or Ash which is starting to go you want a 60cc Saw to chase it through FAST. Buy the 560xp.

Hi Handcutter,

Im 23, self employed and have been production cutting since January. I actually learnt to cut properly in East Sussex (Jan-June) and have since moved back home to Aberdeenshire for the summer.

My intention is to move back south come October in order to cut through the winter again so currently Im looking for a crew to come and join.

I have my CS30,31 & 32 and Emergency first Aid. Im confident clear felling hornbeam & chestnut coppice (including basic chestnut product selection) as well as self select thin on Birch & big Ash. I've done some oversize Oak and Chestnut, as well as a fair bit amongst softwood but i'm guessing this is of less relevance to you!

I should say i am only interested in felling & cutting timber, I have no desire to end up as a groundie just chucking brash through a chipper or scrub clearing.

I appreciate iv only got 9 months proper experience but Im very capable of carrying my weight in a crew.

Cheers

 16. Do you pay your Groundie to think or drag brash? If its just the latter stop pointing fingers...
