  1. . "Then get some training on how to use them! " More important than any kit
  2. Go on eBay and get a first field dressing. Preferably the Israeli issue one. Then get a small pouch for it at a camping shop. Or if you wear trousers with a side pocket keep it in there.
  3. Turn it into a splitter. I'm just in the process of stripping an old chipper down and using the trailer and engine unit as the basis.
  4. The main stems have been snapped up by Big J. He has first dibs on some of the smaller stuff. However there will still be loads of smaller bits that are ideal for turners left. There's a couple of piles
  5. Photos of the stem as promised There's three peices all 8ft ish
  6. [ATTACH]156144[ There's these three piles from the head. I'll put one up of the stem tomorrow
  7. If somone one want to come mill it at my yard then that's fine too.
  8. I am taking down a medium sized walnut in Forres today. The stem is 7ft x 3ft. Plus two big limbs 10ft x 2ft. Seems a shame to go to firewood Will post pics later on today. If anyone wants to make an offer. Thanks Andy
  9. They get 5 days a week, picked up and dropped off at home. So no travel expense. They go to college for 4 weeks each of the three years. For the course and assessments. All paid for including travel and accom. After the first year the wage goes to £50 a day. After cs 39 is achieved its £70 a day. Considering I worked for free for a year when I first started. I think it's not to bad.
  10. I was offering £30 a day for a 6hr day. Up here you can rent a room with bills included for £60 a week.
  11. It's a modern apprentiship in trees and timber through the government. The training provider is Barony college.run by a boy called Doug Imrie.
  12. They have to travel down to a college in Edinburgh for a few weeks each year to do the courses and assessments. The courses and assessments are paid for by the government every thing else by the company.
  13. So what do people pay or would expect to be paid as apprentice. Bearing in mind that it includes all PPE, chainsaws, climbing gear, courses 30/31/32/38/39 chipper. Over a 3 year period.
  14. To be fair there's plenty around like that they just want £100 a day.
  15. I do try and treat anyone as I like to be treated. I pay more than minimum wage, he's pickup up and dropped of at home most days, I take him out climbing on my own time at weekends. I've even put one boy up at my own home for a few months so he could save up for his own place. There's certainly no bullying or taking advantage going. Not that I should have to justify my actions, but I feel I have to.
  16. They don't seem to be able to see the end goal. There mates are working at factories in mind numbing jobs getting more money.
  17. I was/am a big believer in giving a young lad a chance, But I've just had my second one go! First one about a year ago I had to sack cause he turned up stoned one day and jumped in the pickup whilst I was up the tree and crashed it into the clients hedge then fence. He didn't have a driving licence. Second one has been on board now 5 months. He was really coming along nicely, quick learner and keen as mustard. However I gets a text last night saying he can't afford the wages and he's got another job and won't be in Monday. He said he loved the job and really enjoyed working with us. I offered more money but turned down. It takes a lot of extra time and effort to train these lads, he'd never held a saw before and I had him climb and take a branch down last week. Now I'm not sure if I've got the energy to train another lad. Other option is up the prices and use subcontractors.
  18. All down to the biscuit and tea. If no tea or biscuit then no extras. Digestives and rich teas, a little extra. Home bakes and biscuits in wrappers then I'll do any extra they want

    Soil samples

Some of the most meaningful results per £ I have had have been obtained by half filling a glass bottle with the 'soil' and topping up with water then shaking like hell and leaving it to stand for a few hours. Layers will form and give an idea of how much clay, silt and soil and organics. It's a doddle to take a pH test of the reamining water with litmus paper. The main thing then you are missig is mineral content, and particularly nitrogen. There's a simpe test for that too, but I'm not going to waste time explaining it in case its' more than you need. Cheers , this is the sort of level I'm looking toward. I'd be grateful if you could explain the rest.

    Soil samples

It's a part of a large garden where a few trees and some roddies have died back. I do realise there could be a thousand reasons for this but they asked if I could do a soil sample so I will.

Hi I have to take a soil sample a clients house. Can someone send me a good link or talk me through it. I have had a good search on the net but not getting anywhere. Many thanks in advance. Andy
  24. I was wondering what was people's thoughts were on this. Working on some whitebeams today when I've come across some old cable bracing. It can't be adjusted and it's tight solid. My plan was to remove it and put in cobra bracing slightly higher. Then drill through and put some plate bracing on the union.
