1. Not the same thing but I was offered £200 for my Hare last night. Refused the sale as SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) wants it and I can use it as a 3D pattern anyway
2. Smashing I don't usually like the soaring birds but thats great
3. Well a warped moon gazing hare may be funky but as it's not had the heart wood removed will split. Looks like I need to find another source of wood not of the ash variety for carving then. most of my owls have been from ash which has only been cut a few months maybe 10 at most.
4. Another 1st to show.
5. But but but I like the grain
6. I hope to have some pieces of ash in the next few days/weeks. I have been helping a couple of guys out clearing some land and cutting down some troublesome trees and my payment will be ash I have carved what was supposed to be seasoned ash and it cracked even though it was kept in a cool low lit garage so should I just go for it with this green ash and see what happens? I dont want to wait a couple of years before I can hack it up, what's the least time I can wait if I cant carve it green? I generally use a damp meter on my woods one that ticks when dry and screams when wet and a lot of the relatively green ash I have carved has actually been almost dry straight away

Sorry just noticed this message <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/sad.png" alt=":(" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I'm not used to the way this forum works. I have not fired up the old myford yet I have been concentrating on getting wood and chopping it down to owls etc but will make up some tools in time.

8. Thank you for all the kind feedback I had to remove the bark off the stump as I found worm holes in it but in bark only.
9. I dont feel qualified to give pointers I have only been doing this a short while. I can only say what I did which was 1st to draw up a hare front and side views on A4 the transferred it to the tree doubling up all dims. I then blocked it out with my MS260 then removed 95% of the rest with the MS150.
10. Ummmmm not sure probably keep it.
11. It's finished. I was so pleased with how far I had come with the chainsaw I didn't want to convert it to firewood by messing up fine detail on the face so went in with chisel and sander Slopped some linseed on it and voilà
12. Nice job That's some very light oak is it fairly green? What was it like to saw?
13. I think it's difficult not to appear to copy just about everything that can be carved has been done it's just the way it's done and the style that's different. Let us know how you get one and post some pictures please
14. Thanks chaps I will finish it with chisel but only for the eyes and paws then give it a good soak of linseed oil. More pickies to come when there is more to show.
15. I'm trying to do as much as I can with the MS150 rather than resorting to chisel as I had been in the past few months. So far it's all chainsaw
16. I been using my 150 rear handle today all standard. I cant comment on how it compares to other saw and chain combinations as I have only recently started using a chainsaw let alone this carving lark. Unfinished Hare:
17. I'm no expert Chris TBH. All I had to compare it with was some of the old Norfolk wherrys that were sunk on the broads during the war to stop Gerry landing sea planes .......... anyway........... anything below water level and especially in the mud was fine anything above rotted.
18. That's that sorted then I have no ticket
19. Nice one I know it's oak but wont it rot above the waterline?
20. I guess a certification and public liability insurance is needed? I did my 1st show Sunday just gone but hand chiselled pre chain sawn owl blanks.
21. I have not had any tottie sprawl over my owls but everyone says how tactile they are and have to rub/caress the head.
22. I want to carve large, I think I need to get a sacrificial piece of pine type stuff and just give it my best shot with moon gazing hare etc. Bigger is easier in some ways............ remove 1/2" on a small carving it's boogered, 1/2" on a BIG carving wont show.
