  1. This is all very interesting reading. I've not seen anything on the boat forums to indicate that anyone's very worried about ethanol in petrol (unlike concerns about low sulphur Diesel following the demise of red). I suppose big outboards just simply use too much petrol to even consider the use of Aspen, and maybe another factor is that you don't really breathe the exhaust fumes. From my point of view our tender uses a four stroke outboard, and we don't even get through 5L in a year. It would really cost very little to switch in our case.
  2. No earthly point in putting a CO detector where it won't detect any CO, it needs to be in the same room as the appliance. For real piece of mind, if you're worried, use radio or direct linked alarms - then if the CO detector goes off in the living room it will also set off the smoke alarms elsewhere.
  3. Probably a lot of buyers aren't VAT registered, so the ex-VAT price wouldn't be relevant for them.
  4. Not quite the same, the FIT is a subsidy for generating electricity not for using it. RHI is the only subsidy I think that's based on consumption.
  5. How big is the wood you're cutting? You can cut pretty big stuff with a little saw like a Stihl 181 or a Husqvarna 135.
  6. Down South maybe, I'm not seeing any consistent predictions for around here beyond next week (which is becoming milder). Where are you seeing the big freeze coming from?
  7. Interesting discussion as I'm in a similar position to the OP, except I've just cut up a big Ash log with my MS180. The log was over 3' in diameter, and it took quite a bit of head scratching to work out how to cut it with only a 14" bar (under 13" actual cut). I just don't know how often I'm going to be dealing with that size in the future.
  8. Where are they made nowadays?
  9. Mice. Dead ones from the traps. I used to throw them outside, but since we set mouse poison I didn't want to poison the local wildlife.

    Trousers

They're hellish hot though, how do you guys manage in Summer?
  11. How wet are they at the moment?
  12. I saw in the videos he uses a tyre on the block. Don't like that idea at all, isn't it asking for the axe to bounce right back at you if you have a miss hit?
  13. Cheers. My plan was to lie the pallet flat, set the circular saw for around 3/4" cut, and run it along at 90 degrees to the slats. Not tried it yet, but have about 30 pallets in the shed. With a chainsaw how do you arrange the pallet so the bar or chain doesn't touch something it shouldn't? Support the pallet upright and cut downwards, or lie it across a couple of saw horses?
  14. Didn't Div_h say he bought by Paypal, but not from Ebay?
  15. What would be the best way of cutting up pallets with a chainsaw? (I assume for firewood). I've always dismantled them, then cut the planks with a cross cut saw, but did wonder about slicing the intact pallet with handheld circular saw.
  16. Can you not do a Paypal claim? Here's their help page which specifically refers to non Ebay purchases. Got to be worth a try, surely. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_complaint-view&nav=0.5 Alternatively, if paid by credit card (via Paypal), then you could try a chargeback claim on the credit card.
  17. I just measured, and you're it seems you get short changed on the Stihl bar lengths. The so called "14" actually only extends 12 1/4 inches from the spikes, three inches shorter than the so called 16" bar on my electric saw. Anyway after using the saw today I'm reminded that there's not much life left in the current chain. I've ordered the cheap bar/chain combo and I'll see how I get on with it.
  18. Well, for someone with two different sized feet .. STIHL Elten Standard Chainsaw Safety Boots UK Size 12/10
  19. Thanks for all the comments. I think if rapid wear is the concern then the cheap bars would be fine for my use. Especially if 16" won't really suit the MS180 so I'll only use that occasionally.
  20. And E for easy start? Not really needed for 32cc
  21. I suppose it depends where it's measured, but either way a 55DL bar will be 1 7/8" longer than a 50DL 14" bar, won't it?
  22. I understand what you're saying, but my electric saw was 16" and I was missing the extra length trying to slice up a large log. Assuming the cheap bar is not completely useless, once I've tried it I can either get a decent chain, or keep the cheap 16" set for occasional use, and keep a decent quality 14" (or even 12") for normal use. Tony S
  23. Hi, I was wondering whether the cheap bars offered by some dealers are worthwhile for occasional use, or whether they're completely useless. I'm thinking of trying a 16" bar on my MS180, and I can get a bar + chain for £14.95 from one of the budget mail order places. The idea is that I'd see how that works for me, then get a decent 55DL chain if it works well. Any comments on the cheap stuff? Thanks, Tony S
  24. None taken. My question is really about where the line is drawn, if any failing of these entry level Stihls is dismissed as they're "only a home owner saw", then are they really worth twice the price of say Sanli or Mitox?
  25. But should it really be that short lived, since it's around twice the price of a budget branded saw?
