    Jays

Plenty of jays in my wood but they're a bit secretive so only see them if sitting quietly.
  2. Grazon 90 is withdrawn so not available. Roundup 360 is on ebay and very effective. You need 2% which is 500 mls in 10litres by knapsack. That will knock them dead. At this time of year however, I'd first cut them down with a strimmer then in a month treat the regrowth. I did over half an acre of head high last year and was amazed that I got virtually no regrowth this spring.
  3. Oslac's comments are totally correct. The one thing that he didn't add which defines a profession is that you can be struck off. So you have a qualification, you must belong to a professional body, you take responsibility for your advice, have indemnity insurance and if you transgress, that professional body can stop you working. So physiotherapists are professionals and counsellors are not.
  4. Or you could try what has been suggested twice and cut through a diseased branch to see if it has the brown rings of verticillium wilt which is the commonest killer of larger Acers.
  5. a better picture ie more close up, might help sensible suggestions.
  6. Magical birds. Only camped amongst them once and it was frankly quite scary. Lucky you!
  7. I'd cut off a branch that's dead and see what the wood inside looks like. I've had it happen with V. wilt and the whole tree will quickly die if you don't cut out the diseased parts.
  8. Discuss it with her and threaten small claims court which will include the cost of the paperwork and your time in attending court.
  9. Telling the neighbour is both the right thing to do and may also improve your relationship with them.
  10. Nettles will totally swamp the growth so you need to spray a reasonable area around them before they are established. I did about an acre in my wood like this last year. You will never kill all the nettles even if you tried, but I agree about leaving some nettles growing. Ultimately shading them out is the best solution.
  11. Cut them down before they seed. Then as they start to regrow in a month, use glyphosate but very locally. Will get rid of them easily and cheaply without killing much else.
  12. The answer is don't. Milling is a winter activity not in a hot June. My logs are stacked in a damp place and will get milled in November.
  13. Looks a dodgy story to me. GP surgeries don't usually treat lacerations that need stitching, they normally suggest you go to your nearest Accident and Emergency department who deal with emergencies. Suspect this is what happened here.
  14. I cut back several such yews in my garden when I moved in. They resprouted and looked good within 2 years. The risk of heave is massively overstated and as others have said, a small tree so I'd ignore that risk.
  15. Thanks, that's reassuring to hear. What is the advantage of single sided over double, as I've always valued the flexibility of double sides?
  16. Wow I want one. Slightly over engineered though and not sure it would fit in my garage.
  17. BUMP Surely somebody can tell me how well the big Echo hedge cutters deal with farm type hedges?? thanks in advance
  18. There's little point in buying premixed as its nowhere near strong enough. All of the glyphosates seem the same to me, its just the strength that varies. So buy the 360 and mix it 500ml in 10 litres and spray to run off. I got rid of my knot weed that way, but you need to be persistant.
  19. Sides and top but interesting idea. I might try my brushcutter and see how it does. Hard to reach the top though!!
  20. Thanks. I'm quite happy with what the 81R can handle and take your point about two years growth which is fine with me. I'm looking for what the Echo equivalent can manage, as the website makes no mention. Any comments on single vs double sized cutters?
  21. Can I ask some advice on hedgecutters. I use Stihl chainsaws but the dealer is miles away and frankly a bit useless. I see that Echo has a great reputation. I need it to cut not trim, so farm style hedges that I can't use a flail on. So the cut of the stihl hs81r seems ideal. Not really clear from the Echo site which of theirs is a cutter or a trimmer as they seem to alternate the words. So can the bigger Echos handle the 38mm diameter cut of the big Stihl? Are there other models/makes I should be considering? Also never used a single sided. What are the advantages as I can imagine disadvantages?
  22. Patience can be difficult! The best for me was the wild service trees that put on 12 inches of growth in April alone - amazing trees. I suspect though that Aspen being a prolific pioneer species is well able to hold its own.
  23. Like you I planted over 100 species in my wood this winter. I've had similar success to you in your other posts. I've planted aspen as well which is doing nothing. White, black, grey, and various hybrid poplars are growing fast. So I'm just being patient. Interestingly I've got about 500 trees potted up in my garden for other places and these include aspen in controlled potted conditions which aren't growing yet either. So I'd chill and expect them to catch up later!
  24. Great to discover someone as keen to try out things as I am. Not tried making my own varnish but perhaps that's next. Getting on well with old fashioned phenolic varnish which makes a nice wiping varnish with tung oil.
