  1. Thats your bluff though, sitting there pretending to be a guy, pretending to be a girl, when you are a girl.... I've got your number. Joking aside, let us know how it gos on over the weekend, I'm interested in your feedback on the saw as you sound as though you are as green as me.
  2. I've been looking around for a Pro saw myself for around 6 months, and all my reading(reviews, brochures, talking to guys and using others kit) suggests the 550xp, so thats the route I'm going, Forest and arb have them for about £545 inc vat and heated grips, I just need to get the pennies together now.
  3. Yes, but if the manual says "not for ground use" and something go's tits up, and you cant justify why it was being worn, you could be up a certain creek.
  4. I always thought that Cavers and Rescuers used them because they were more likely to bang there head against something, rather than something land on their head. The opposite reason Tunnelers and Miners use construction style helmets.
  5. I was under the impression that the two different EN/CE codes weren't better, just designed for different uses, EN 12492 for heights and EN 397 for ground. However, googled Petzle CE EN and got this. "All Petzl helmets provide the same level of protection against impacts. The differences are found at the chinstrap and the presence or lack of ventilation. A stronger chinstrap is recommended for work at height in order to avoid losing the helmet during a fall. A non-ventilated shell also protects against electrical risks and molten metal splash." http://www.lezeckavystroj.cz/files/PRODUKTOVA%20DOKUMENTACE/produktova_dokumentace_Petzl/comparison-table-helmets.pdf So a Petzle helmet with no chinstrap is rated to ground work. Just go's to show every day is a school day. BUT, if the manual specifically says not for ground work, then maybe he is right, and even though the lid wont offer any different protection to a forest helmet, it isn't "fit for purpose" so will break PUWER, and your insurance.
  6. Hi treemon, I didnt see your post before, I'm in chesterfield.
  7. I find that with the Open university, though the level 2 Arboriculture Diploma was a piece of proverbial cake compared to the workload of the OU.
  8. I'm thinking of the rfs cert arb, but an OU degree and a possible level3 at myerscough in september are taking up my time, and the degree is set to go on until 2017.
  9. Ah, my mistake. If you could find out, I am interested in anything utility/rail/highways
  10. Do you need a PTS ticket before you can get a trackside Utility arb job? I've found plenty of places offering UA1&2 but cant find anyone locally that offers the PTS Training.
  11. I did look at the HCC but I wasnt sure wheter or not it would be acepted qualification by employers.
  12. I've recently been looking at the RFS Cert Arb and the FdSc Arb from myerscough. Advanced Course Search - Royal Forestry Society Certificate Arboriculture (On-line) Advanced Course Search - FdSc Arboriculture (On-line) From what I can gather, you still need to get your own tickets tho.
  13. Noise complaints in normal work hours? Blimey! Couldnt you put something under the windscreen wiper of cars near where you will be chipping saying something along the lines of "chipping will take place between 8 am & 5PM tomorwo, we would apreciate it if you do not want dust on your car then please move it before this time" And cone thearea the day before, so you'll not get anyone in the way/ down wind of the chipper moaning about mess.
  14. I'm just getting into Arb, and I wondered if it would be worth changing the dressing carried in the first aid kit from a basic ambulance bandage/pad type dressing to something like a Quick Clot QuikClot - QuikClot Sport® or Isreali FFD First Field Dressing (FFD) Israeli Pattern, Kit Monster systems. I'm not looking specifically at buying gucci kit, but when the rhino turd hits the wind turbine then i want the best kit I can get my hands on. Both are absorbant pads on elastic bandage though similar to normal dressings they are supposed to take a fraction of the time, and be simpler(something that can see would come in handy if your on your own up a tree) Would these be suitable to replace/ supplement the large dressing in the personal F/A kits? Cheers guys Syd
  15. Increase the biodiversity of the area by genetically engineering triffids, or the worms from dune. Then open it up as a campsite for chavs. Should be interesting. Sorry, I've just gotten back from the local shops so the old blood pressure's a little high.
  16. Thanks guys, I've allready looked at Moulton, its still a bugger of a comute or needs relocating. I'll look at treelife in a minute.
  17. Is it worth doing the Lvl 3/4 diplomas by distance learning? I've been looking at myresbough and capal manor to do the full time courses, possibly starting next year, but as I'm based in south yorkshire the comute would be a killer or relocating would be pricey. Has anyone done them this way? Or does anyone have experiance of the full time course and be able to give some useful feedback? Cheers Syd
  18. Is it subject to the same storage regs as petrol?
  19. Just to add to the thread I'm looking for a new saw as well. I'm specifically thinking about the Husqa 435E or Stihl MS211.(both around £300 ish with a 16" bar) And yes, it is my 1st saw, hence the reletivly low price, as I'm bound to smash it. Also leaning towards the Stihl as I've been told Stihl are more tolerant of noob mistakes though the Husqvas are generally nicer to use.
  20. Hate to be a pain, but do you have something similar to your letter from stihl? Thinking of getting a new saw and running it on Aspen from the off, but I'd hate to mess up several hundred quids worth of saw with nothing more than a few posts on a forum as comeback, if you dont mind.
  21. Wouldnt it be more apt to say "BEST 4 BY 4 = Landies, the Best 4 by 4 by far (any breed as long as it hhas a green oval on the front) best land rover = Muddy ones" Just saying. lol
  22. So how does an MSC help open doors? I'm about a year year into a BSc in Env Managment(OU), and doing the Arb & Env Conservation diplomas(why did they change it from the NVQ/C&G?) at the same time, hoping to get into contracting or grass roots stuff for the FC etc. Had my share of office work and I have to say itdoesnt suit me, so I'm aiming t be out and about as much as possible. I was looking at the MSc/ PGDip at bangor but I was'nt sure if it would offer any value for money, seeing as I want to be more practical than managerial, if that makes sense.
