  1. He's right tho, too many people see the beef/lamb/chicken as a meal that starts life in the freezer eisle. I was talking to a chap the other day that was cooking himself Tesco chicken burgers, this same chap said that he doesn't buy caged eggs because of the concerns he has for the animal welfare(a legitimate concern thb) he said all this without the slightest traces of irony. How can people be so simple?
  2. I like the fact that Lidl sold hare until some gits started jumping up and down about the brown hare being an endangered species. They came from bloody Argentina & Chille where the things are an imported pest. Human Tastes like chicken.
  3. Hey, I resemble that remark. lol.
  4. I appreciate that, BUT, if you don't price a job correctly, your finance, tax, wage bill and your own income takes a hit as well, and as you said, the cost of living keeps going up. I've priced myself out of (an unrelated) business before and I'm only just getting back on my feet after the fallout, you still need to bring more in than is going out.
  5. generally thirstier and higher tax than compared to say a transit. but if its a straight replacement for a unimog I couldn't say as I've not got any experience with them.
  6. £120 take home is'nt bad, but if you have to find your overheads out of it that £120 soon gets eaten up.
  7. Dont know about the tipper, but for the 130 in general Pro's Its a landy so will go just about anywhere you will want it to go, And its a going to look bloody amazing once dirtied up, because its a Landy. Con's Its a landy so will cost a fortune to buy and run, so basically its a Landy.
  8. To be honest, Now I've gotten back into the swing of education I'm very much enjoying it all, the time commitment is just something that has to be dealt with.
  9. Amen to that tom, Headphones blaring out AC/DC while I work, 2nd assignment of the year is due in a few weeks so working on it in the small hours when the house is quiet is a great way to get it done without distractions. It has its downside tho. http://www.treelifeac.co.uk and http://www.hccollege.co.uk/courses.asp do courses as well.
  10. I didnt see the last bit, Myerscough college do an online arb degree, as do banger uni School of the Environment & Natural Resources, and the open university has Environment studies, env science, and env management, or there is the RFS cert arb & AA Technicians cert. There are probably more, but these are the ones I'm aware of. I suppose it's where you want to go with the qualification once you've finished it, and what interests you now, along with your time commitment(a degree can take 6 years part time) as to what you go for..
  11. I have a pair of "c"'s and they are a lot warmer than the "A"'s you still get a cold arse though. Big sizes fit ok, but you might have a problem with leg length.
  12. I go to the library to study as often as I can, otherwise you get comments such as "I know your trying to study but......" I'm supposed to spend 20 hours p/w so I've got a timetable that tells me when to study, when to work on assignments etc but my main distraction is the internet.
  13. Thanks for that paul. So is this right, the acreditation isn't required to sub, or to tender for contracts but they ARE if you want to do any work on the motorways? Cheers
  14. No, I wont be in the same class I'll be at myerscough college in Preston. Good luck with the course. I'm really looking forward to mine.
  15. Is it worth getting approved by the British standards? I know we can just buy a copy of the relevant standards and then work towards that, but is it worth the extra cost of being able to put their approved logo on the side of your van and on any paperwork? Does it get any additional customer interest? I am thinking of setting up as a suby around college and I can see that it would help get work in this area, but is it worth the expense?
  16. I know what your saying. Its how I saw it when I left school as well. Forget work, as you get into college you will have a great time, meet great guys, and I dare say, once you get into the swing you may even hang out with the guys from college in the pub(once your 18, or can nick an older brothers ID) College is still a place to learn, but also because they are a lot less formal than school, its a good place for friendships. I'm not saying you should take it easy and just hang out in the cafeteria, but you'll only have this time once, the next few years should be great for you, developing as a person is just as important as gaining job skills. Being 31 and being in college isn't the same as being 16 and being in college(I feel so much older than the rest of the guys it is frightening), so get the most of it while you can and without looking like a peado. Sorry about the lecture, I just dont want others to make the same mistakes I did.
  17. You might find it easier going if you do the Level 2 before you move onto the level 3, but that's your choice as it will increase the time your at college. BUT, and I speak from experience, try not to get distracted, I allowed myself to get drawn to the bright lights and so I messed up my education the 1st time round, luckily for me things happened so I could go back years later and correct the mistake.
  18. Hope I havent put you off, the course is really enjoyable and pretty straight forward.
  19. Its worth checking with the college once you have started the course though, they might have something like a discount for assesments or "Short Courses". You will probably still need to pay for the other tickets, Tree climbing (CS38) is only touched upon, and no areal rescue is taught at all. Check the syllabus that the college is working towards for a better idea. It also might be worth getting some of the books from the reading list to swat up on over the holidays. The Arborists & The Foresters Companions, Woodland Managment A practical guide and the secret life of trees all helped give me a decent footing at the start of the course. One last piece of advice, Stay on top of your assignments, and ask your tutors to have a look at them before you hand them in, if you are well in front of the cut off date they should be ok with that, then make any changes they suggest and you should fly through with top marks.
  20. I'm doing the Level 2 Arb Diploma at Derby college. I am a bit more long in the tooth than you guys, but I thought f*** it, While I havenet got a job I may as well go for it. A few of the guys on the course with me straight out of school were wanting to do the NPTC tickets and there was nothing stopping them, until they realised that All of CS30 and most of CS31 would be covered as part of the course, the advice from the tutor was to wait til easter, and then get a bit of extra tuition to do the assesments then(and learn the schedule off by hart). That way they would just need to pay for the assesments and so save at least £500. Personally I'm (hopefully) off to Myerscough at preston to do the level 3 in september. I'm allready well on the way to an Open Uni degree I started a few years ago so I don't need the degree in arb as much as I need the practical knowledge, and as a bonus I've been told that Myerscough throw in a hefty bunch of NPTC tickets included in the cost of the course.
  21. According to a St Johns sales person you also need a new 4 day course if you cant produce your current FAW certificate. I was in the process of booking a refresher, and was asked for the cert, and when I said My old employer still had it, BUT I had the card with all the pertinent details on it, I was told I had to pay up for the full course again.
  22. Thanks guys. So its worth it, but on the list of future spends, rather than "Musts" for now then?
  23. Is it worth getting the Nebosh or Iosh Working safely and Managing safely tickets? I have got my name down to do the Lantra Health and Safety 4 day course, but is it worth the extra expense?
  24. OK, not my dad, but apt none the less "Life is like a box of chocolates, you only like some of it, and its over before you know its begun." "Life everyday as though its your last, because one of them will be"
  25. Funnily enough I heard this for the first time in ages today.
