well i got the catalpa from jon and it's great stuff (see bowl turning thread) but i'm on the look out for any more please. the bigger the better really. anyone got any?

one of my favorite timbers. good bowl too. have you used a uv inhibiting finish? take a pic in the sun and repost, it will look spectacular...

i know fellas, i should stop trying to tell everyone what to do i suppose. it's my wish that everyone in the world should use trees to their full potential but not everyone seems to care as much as i. what would you contrast this wood with for a chessboard ian? i know your only joking dan, the brown oak will have lost a bit of weight by now but have got a lot on my plate for the next couple of weeks. with the offcuts i have i can see the wood mounting up, there will be one full pallet here...

iroko would clog up the paper and feel oily so i think one of the meranti group is a best guess at the moment. end of the day dan if it's hard enough and you have a use for it, use it... if it's hard enough for flooring it will be useful for other purposes.

that equates to 50lbsft3 so should be useable for some projects.

that's something i suppose... it's so sad when such a magnificent specimen goes up in mostly smoke rather than milled. there would be some fantastic grain in that old beast

what state or condition is it in. kiln dried in to boards it can be £1000-£1225m3

i'm starting to think that it may be yellow balau rather than plain old meranti. what does it weigh per ft3.

is the colour in the base hard or so soft you can punch it?

it does look more meranti like now but it still looks orange in the pics flash or not. add one in daylight tomorrow.

take a snap in daylight then ill be sure. the end grain does not look like meranti but more like iroko... it looks more like iroko in those pics mate, in which case it should be ok

me too it'g gorgeous looking stuff and it seems to dry very happily too but i will leave that bit one for a few months before i finish it. would love to see some of yours when they're done.

depends what you cal native. when i asked the ancient tree hunt what counted they said anything over 400 years growing in this country. my collins nature guide to trees of Britain and Europe states that the strawberry tree is a native plant but i do agree that not everything on that list is strictly native. -
it came with a 36" but as burrell says 60 is the longest recommended.
