  1. Marks going to have a field day with this question Groundsman: All of the above concerning attitude and ability, along with PPE.. Maybe if he/she was coming in for a site clearance and their task was as a feller (specifically) then possibly a saw depending on the circumstances - but no big deal if they didn't want to or have one. (saw provision paid extra, but wouldn't expect them to bring fuel)
  2. Not been self-employed for many years and I don't deal too much with the invoicing side of things much at work, but I don't think so.
  3. Well it wasn't the latter!
  4. Peace is such a subjective term. Attlee 'negotiated 'Peace' but thankfully others saw peace under subjugation as unacceptable! The Roman Empire required an awful lot of military manpower to ensure peace and unity, a bit like the Third Reich, Russia, China, North Korea..... Starting to see a trend appearing here?
  5. "United". What a strange choice of word. Wouldn't conquered and ruled be a better choice? That's a bit like saying the Third Reich wanted to unite Europe. And, maybe history won't see us as the country who threw it's toys out of the pram, but the country that identified the problems of the EU, getting out while the going was good and initiating its eventual break up?
  6. Not a client, but the companies secretary and bosses sister. It's a funny old world.
  7. What makes them non-marking Pete?
  8. Done that myself, thinking I was anchored to another stem. Fatigue/complacency/loss of concentration gets ya hurt
  9. Retiring at 30 Steve? Young, even for this industry You could probably make a far better living in IT/webdesign with the knowledge and experience you've gained since starting this site.
  10. Bill, I associate it with stumps and colonization of dead decaying matter. And I've only seen it in the root sinuses (where I'd expect some dead matter). Never seen it on the actual buttresses, so maybe a little further investigation. David will be along later to say that all the aforesaid is total billhooks and don't concern yourself
  11. Oy! Who said you could use a picture of my car
  12. Think I read this the first time around, but good to read it again. Did a couple of stints in the mid nineties when there was a lot fewer free-lancers and tree co's. Not an easy life and the equipment available to make life easier hadn't been invented. Would I do it again if I was twenty something? Without a doubt (I'd just charge more) Looking back the only thing I regret is not getting better educated earlier but when you're twenty; thirty, forty and fifty is literally a lifetime away. Thanks for a good read Adam
  13. We've a site clearance, to start at the beginning of December for a couple of weeks and have a surplus of timber - sycamore, birch, I think beech and some poplar. Nice straight stems in the main. Ideally could do organizing someone to collect it off site or arrange for it to be collected. Diameters not exceeding two foot and we can cut to whatever length preferred during the extraction. I don't know atm how good the access will be because the haul road isn't in yet, but it isn't looking to be too much of an issue. Volume wise, probably 30-40 trees. We're not looking for cold, hard cash but reliability to clear the site within the timescale we've being allocated. Post or PM if you're interested please.
  14. Nice idea, but realistically most of the American Police look like they'd struggle to bend over and tie their shoe laces, let alone swing an axe for ten minutes.
  15. Before or after your head hurt?
  16. Reports this morning, now denied, said that Gucci Grace had already taken exile in Namibia. Interesting program today on his attempts to put his family in power when he died. Looks like he left things a little late.
  17. Well, everyone else is aware what's going on. If you really needed to know, you would have been told! Circles within circles you know, old chap
  18. Neat, so the last tree in the last photo is called David? Its a novel solution,
  19. When you start mending them, like chippers, the profit margin doesn't seem so good. They get hammered, need fairly regular major overhauls and have a short life expectancy. Also they're not out all day/5 days a week, or at least ours isn't and that's not because we're too dear as we get most of the jobs we price. Lots of jobs may only be charged at £80-£150, with travelling between jobs being largely non-paying time (your wagons earning £52 per hour every hour) and the target £450 day rate isn't achieved (sometimes it's bettered). Income over a year is far from £450x5x48wks I can assure you.
  20. Cos most of the industry would be against being vetted by an organisation such as the AA. Particularly having to pay for the privilege Starting at the top, the government fails to acknowledge the importance of trees, most departments within LAs are the same, Highways see trees as barriers, other professions in the building industry don't like trees that much, arboriculturists (even chartered arbs) are still the tree man to the other professionals on site, lots of the public see trees as either a nuisance or so big they're dangerous..... so who is going push for a change in the law and who is going to champion a change. Sorry just jaded today after seeing a couple of construction sites with fecked trees by builders who don't care and planners who don't even demand a tree survey or AMS before consenting the proposal.
  21. Late to the thread, but as a guideline I'll quote around 450-500 a day for man and machine. Usually spec not to remove grinding if possible. This is based on cost of machine, consumerables like teeth and belts ( expensive and often), vehicle running costs and expected life expectancy. Not had much in complaints about the rate.
  22. Not done Treelifes report writing course myself yet, but did the mortgage one previously, you won't go wrong Dave or Andy. Also attended the AA subsidence seminar with Giles Biddle and another fellow, whose name escapes me but is currently doing them on his own. Also very good. Pointless post, either will be more than adequate to achieve what you need, although I'd personally choose Treelife because I like the relaxed atmosphere
  23. Sorry Ed, it's been a long day - it would be a pointless defence.
  24. As Ian said, the consultant will have a lot more information than you've said to base their decision on. It's not that uncommon either for issues to occur after partial underpinning, one part of the foundation is 'fixed' in place and other parts may be suffering normal seasonal movement on a soil with a high PI. Depending on the size of the tree, 16m may not be an overly great distance either.
