  10. Its funny these posts seem to pop up again when the weather gets colder! I had words today with a ***** who was trying to load up his transit with the cord from the days felling, after politely explaining the wood was the property of the customer (not that he could have it even if it was mine) and he couldnt have it, he got quite annoyed an told me he was going to break into my yard and steal every bit of kit that I own! The things people will do for some crappy holly and sycamore! Just ordered a new security setup for the yard so thats one benefit!
  11. Cheers for the replies, it doesnt have a massive crown anyway but reducing may be an option, Surely pollarding such an old tree with lots of decay allready would be asking for trouble? I have said that I will take another look in the summer to check the foliage etc and possibly work something out then.
  12. Hopefully I have attached the pictures right today. Went to look at this in my aunts garden today and not quite sure how to proceed. Its a fair sized Oak, the Crown looks full and well shaped, its lost a major limb off one side previously and the resulting damage has caused dead tissue around the wound. In the base of the stem are signs of decay in at least 2 locations and a third spreading up a crack to about 6ft in height. There is also a large bulge also around the 6ft mark. There were some some fungal brackets at the base but they were removed to "kill" the fungus my my uncle They want to keep the tree but at the same time dont want to risk damaging their property or the road. Any ideas what I should tell them to do, I was thinking getting someone in to do a detailed assesment to check the extent of decay in the stem or doesnt it look too bad/is it not work the expense? Cheers guys
  13. Cheers Andy, Ill give it a go
  14. There is no dot on the crankgear anywhere, all the pictures I have seen have a V and a Dot but on this one I have nothing
  15. Hi all, Trying to set the Camshaft position on a little gx160 engine I have but there is nothing that I can distinguish as timing marks on either camshaft or crankshaft. If I put the piston at TDC where should the valve position be? any help would be great as its getting really annoying!!
  16. Perfect, where did you manage get the pump and bellhousing from? Cheers
  17. Sorry to pull this thread up again, Just wondering if you ended up fitting the GX160 as I have one from an old generator setup that I was thinking about fitting a pump to and using it to power a splitter?
  18. Hi Paul, Were currently thinning a few oak plantations in Outwood, near Reigate. We would be interested in having a chat with you, I will be back in the office on Wednesday. David Abbott Sparrowhatch Forestry Ltd 01342 477 177 07896 036 437 [email protected]
  19. All finished for the year Been busiest year to date, nice to stop loading and delivering for a week or so now! Even had people calling this morning wanting logs delivered Christmas Eve!!
  20. rounghly how many cubic metres are there to 1 ton of woodchip, looking to put in a new bay to store and sell the chip on to stobarts or someone similar and dont want to make it too small I would have thought being able to store 30 ton at a time would give a good amount of leeway, at the same time I dont want to be forking out for too many materials. Thanks
  21. Hi, We could sort something with regards to timber valuation as you are quite local. Feel free to give me a call or E-mail David Abbott Sparrowhatch Forestry Ltd 01342 477 177 07896 036 437 [email protected]
  22. Looking good, Although cross stacking looks like it uses up a lot of space, any ideas on difference of seasoning times between stacking styles? I guess I could just put some pallets/bearers along the floor and some long chestnut posts at either end to sure up the pile and then go as tall as I can reach? We dont have a forklift/telehandler all the time so cant shift lots of crates around, I think manageable size billets is the way to go for us!
  23. Thanks guys, looks like big stacks of billets it is then. Difflock- If I go down the billet route I will be looking for a new splitter anyway, Although I did consider knocking through a few 1meter sections with the froe as a bit of a trial to see what happened - it is how I make post and rail after all.
  24. not an urgent question but im just trying to get the ball rolling for next year. Currently I only have undercover storage for around 10 cube of logs and as much outdoor storage as I need (within reason) also have a few crates that I store logs in but not as many as I would like! looking to be processing and selling 70-100 cube next winter Would I be better off cutting and splitting as logs and leaving outside under a membrane and moving into the shed as I need them this is what I currently do and it involves lots of double handling so not good at all! so I am considering splitting into billets and stacking with some membrane over the top this would be tidier than a big heap of logs but would there be much benefit in drying and speed over the logs and in the shed option? all will be cut with a chainsaw and split by axe or hydraulic splitter? any other ideas?
