  1. my old dealer used to tell me .325 full chisel cuts just as fast as 3/8ths full chisel. 3/8ths just cuts a bigger (wider) kerf thus using more power for the same cut technically (and wasting you more wood/ leaving a bigger pile of sawdust on the processor)
  2. thread resurrection.... halses sent me two of the 4 way head holding bars. great service from them. anyone got pics of the thor table? also, what maintenance are people doing? ive greased the slider and checked the oil/ checked the magnetic filter thing. still going great guns.
  3. thanks folks. where's best to get a piston?
  4. hi ive got a 10 yr old 575 xp that has siezed badly and needs a new pot/ piston. other than that the saw is in good ish nick as has not done a lot of work and only been used by a mate irregularly over the last 7 yrs. ie its not shaken to bits etc. what are my options? oem parts seem v expensive and spending £400 on a husqvarna pot/ piston is a lot for a 10 yr old saw. What are the non genuine pot/ piston combos like? Are there any good suppliers/ things to watch out for? What is performance like with non genuine parts? Can I expect new pot/ piston to last cutting HW rings?
  5. "next winter as its going to be cold" Mystic meg......?
  6. looks like scots pine. was that £20 the lot or £20/ tonne?
  7. the bar that holds the grub screw on my 4 way head has broken... any ideas if these parts are available, ive had no response from halse's. r
  8. i'm pretty sure you'll only need employers liability if you employ someone... if you do it yourself you don't need it. If you're a sole trader/ in a partnership anyway.
  9. You might be better off putting it on ebay or a sign up in your local shop etc... I guess its about 1 - 1.2 m3 all in if thats an 0.6m3 bag. That makes it an expensive pick up.
  10. The Thor mignon has bigger wheels and is about the same sort of machine. I've got a 9 hp Thor magic and it's 1/3 of a tonne with big wheels but quite hard to move about as well. Much faster ram speed than the mignon and the a11 though but a few hundred quid more. Really pleased with it. You really don't need to tie up a tractor with this sort of machine available.
  11. might weld a flat piece on the bottom and a couple of bits of bar to fit the grooves...
  12. chainsawdom - got any pics of the thor table. be interested in the measurements of the box section, the height and how it attaches/ how the pedal system attaches. there are no decent pics online... if you can and its easier to email ill pm you my email address. cheers
  13. Second the tyre option screwed to a massive chopping block with meaty screws and big washers. Need something like a low profile trailer tyre ideally. very efficient next to the trailer or stack but mullers your axe handle though.
  14. Like I said, don't try to compete on price, compete on quality and you'll win every time.
  15. Matty I'm not saying you're part of the problem. What I'm saying is we all need to stick together and keep our prices reasonable and sustainable and not be afraid to put them up when the raw material goes up. You are right though, there are easier ways to make your money.
  16. Yep, he paid up and kept the wood. He'd asked for more oak in his load so we gave him more oak then he complained that it was green oak, which it wasn't. It was 3 yrs seasoned - 2.5 in a stack. There wasn't even any bark on it. When I explained that the oak would be heavier than the ash, alder, birch, beech he told me that I was conning him and that he knows it's green as he "works with wood" he's probably a kitchen fitter or something and obviously knows more about firewood than me, a professional forester with 20 yrs + experience of dealing with firewood. He said hell not use us again as we were trying to con him. We weren't. I feel for the next supplier who he uses as it'll end up the same. His aggro emails were generally about 10.30 in the evening and the more rational ones in the daytime. I don't need that. Cheque has been banked though.... Back to price of cord.... One of our local competitors (good friends and allies) just paid £42/m3 +vat and delivery for some beech/ oak. We chatted it over yesterday and more likely the price will go beyond that soon but we just all have to put our prices up. At least here in the south east it's better to have a realistic price that makes you some profit and do a few loads less as some customers drop off than keep pushing logs out too cheaply and lose money ( and pi&& off your competition ) with every load. Something to thin about is keeping the price the same but offer a slightly reduced size of load.
  17. We're not selling to cheapskates who are trying to get a better deal than mains gas. If you are, youve got your marketing wrong. People ( in the south east atbleat) have money and love the feel of burning wood and like the autonomy they get from being a little self sufficient and not tied to gas supply and it's perils. All our good customers don't quibble on price but love the quality. I can almost guarantee that anyone who calls up and whinges about the price isn't worth keeping as a customer - "woods wet", "not as big a load as last time", " Dave in the pub does it for £x", "that (seasoned for 3 yrs) wood is fresh cut"..... We had a guy last week, first one of the winter ( we get one per season) complain the load didn't fill his Woodstore as much as last time ( same size load) , wood was heavier ( oak) , " I'm not paying, cancelling my cheque, come and pick It up...." we offered some more wood and free kindling as " the customer is always right" ( as long as he pays), but he still wanted it picked up. We arranged to pick it up 5 days later and bobs your uncle, he wants to keep it.
  18. It's always the same with a new boom type product/ industry. Everyone thinks its easy money doing logs as the raw material was pretty cheap a couple of yrs ago and there were loads of existing and new customers. Every Tom dick and Harry gets involved for a bit of green gold cash and then slowly the raw material is harder to come by, prices go up and a number of the unscrupulous traders p&@s customers off or just can't keep up the quality or supply. It happened with xmastrees a few yrs ago and it'll sort itself out with the logs sometime soon I'm sure. You have to be in it for the long haul, have a good product, not give it away and don't undercut your local guys as it does nobody any favours in the long term and you'll not last the long haul and will also pi&& everyone off. We're all in this together so we need to stickit out and shed the cowboys by keeping a fair price and remembering that there's plenty of cipustomers out there who want a reliable service and a good product.
  19. Yep, it is heavy to move around on your own. Awesome bit of kit though. I thought petro engine splitters were slow and underpowered but this thing is chewing through loads of stuff we haven't been able to split atspeed. Had 20 mins doing 1m billets with the 4 way head. Genius. I hadn't assumed that mine would come with the arms to hold the split billets. Really useful. Great bit of kit and well designed/ built. The leader system is genius with billets.
  20. Chainsawdom Got any pics of the table and how it attaches etc. would love some close ups as I'm gonna fabricate a home made alternative.... Cheers Rich
