Hi I'm on holiday up north, pretty much as far as I can get in England from my place staying at the inlaws very small cottage near rothbury in Northumberland. They've got a Woodburning stove and a log store I built for them a few years ago that copes with a wheely bin and about a m3 of wood at a push. I would have gone bigger but there is really no outside space. Theyve had wood off a few different people locally but the quality varies. They still have some wood but not enough for the winter and I suggested a couple of barrow bags would do it. He'd not heard of these before and didn't know if anyone locally delivered them. Does anyone know of anyone/ deliver them themselves to the rothbury area? If so, how much? If he had a bigger car he could help himself to as much as he liked of our stocks down on the south coast! It's crazy having to think about ordering wood whilst the yards buzzing back home...

Does it matter what it is? Have some wood thats been in a barn for 4 yrs. All sorts. Next to M27. Will need crane lorry/ bulker for some of it.

Mines still going strong. Spends its time splitting massive oversize rings into chunks to go through a processor. There's not much it wont split. Would still love some close up pics of someones table though...! come on...

like the way it fires the billet at the operator.... looks a little over complicated to me. lots of shunting back and forth. compare it to a typical horizontal splitter and a chainsaw - much easier.

not any more where I am at least and I suspect the same is true over England. You'll need FISA update/ recent chainsaw training, Public Liability Insurance, First aid cert before you go and cut anything up on FC land thesedays. You'll also need a mate as lone working with a saw is banned. The price of cordwood as it has been the FC locally here gather up any fallen wood into parcels from 2m3 to a lorryload and sell it through e-sales on the web.

rowan that little chain on the auto return on the magik is a great thing. saves loads of ram time and really speeds up the work.

rowan, we thought the same. we have an old low loader traffic light trailer with a ramp and haul it on with a small handwinch. a boat winch would be easier but we're too tight! It is poss to pull it up the ramp by hand but you dont want to slip over as it's heavy.

what model is your wallenstein if you dont mind me asking...?

Hey, this wasnt meant to be a thor vs wallenstien argument. the thor suited me after the market research I did at the apf etc and from chatting and using mates kit. the single handed out of the box leader system is great and needs no mods and i wanted to be able to split over a metre in length of billet. yep, mods around the splitter like tables and racks etc are always part of the game. you're dead right. i think if the magik came in towable when I bought it I might have gone towable and built a shed to put it in. it is a pita getting it on a trailer but it is pretty heavily built i guess. ta

"Second for Wallenstein.. A few mods and they are great splitters!" - Why buy a "great machine" that needs a few modifications? Why not buy a really great machine that works out of the box? The thor I have I ended up with after loads of research. The petrol version was not that much more expensive than the pto version and meant I didnt have to tie up a tractor. Its fast and will bust pretty much anything. Road tow is great if youre moving round loads of yards etc but can be more difficult to store (ie wont fit in a shed). I think i'd have had one if they did the magik 13t in road tow at the time but I would be worrying about building a new shed to store it in.

we put ours on a tt85 once and nearly tipped it over getting it off... its eaten through a few straps nearly so we always use 4. its pretty heavy really but i'm constantly amazed just what it'll break. we've busted some massive rings with it of very horrible well seasoned beech, ash, oak, holm oak etc. it very rarely stops with anything.

i had this dilemma and bought a petrol thor magik 13t. its been great. i thought that if i was gonna buy a small tractor i wouldnt want to tie it up on a splitter. i bought an old traffic light trailer for £100 and load it onto that with a small boat winch and it'll go anywhere begind the truck. it'll also roll off and wheel into my shed for safekeeping. it'll wheel about on site as long as its fairly level as it has quite big wheels. the speed is plently quick enough at 3/4 revs and it'll go all day on £5-8 of petrol. we've got some really really ugly wood thats been dried 4 yrs in a barn and its done a hell of a job busting 80cm diameter billets of a metre long that we've moved up to it with a minidigger. with a table it'll p&^s through rings even with the 4 way head on. It really is a beast and not much difference from the pto version (and not that much more expensive). you wouldnt want to put it up onto a tipper trailer though, even with ramps (we tried and wont do it again), hence the low traffic light trailer. we love it and it splits stuff thats too big for a processor into billets to then process. give m large a call and get a demo if theyre doing a show sometime. well worth the money, esp with the leader system.

I just dont get this obsession with mulching things. Loads of that wood would have been either nice on my woodpile or a decent home for some sort of wildlife. A lot of energy for bu%%er all out of it, it's not like you can even take the chip away and burn it.

Stefan Not if your northern europe hardwood cordwood has lots of knots or is from big old trees! You should see some of the stuff our 13t thor is eating at the moment. theres a few lumps have made it stop and us look for another way through.
