1. Thinking about getting a Tajfun 400 joy as a first processor, just wondered whether folk reckon the swinging elevator is worth the extra? It allows the elevator to swing up to 15° allowing you to fill several bags / boxes / trailers before you need to move the processor. Cheers Nick
2. Any idea what that equates to in terms of individual trees per 15 or 20 litre tank? I know it depends on nozzle / spray density etc. but ball-park? Cheers Nick
3. Any idea how many trees you can spot spray in a day with a knapsack. Reasonably flat site, clearfell restock, allowing for tank refills, breaks etc. Cheers N
4. Do you know what the height of the lintel is as I will probably be using a tractor and front loader so cab height will be an issue. Cheers Nick
5. What is the span between the upright beams of the lean-to? How do you load the mill? Is height and clearance to the lintel an issue? Cheers Nick
6. What sort of buildings / shelters do people use to house their mills? Can anyone give me an example of a set up that combines security with ease of use? Cheers Nick

Yard Layout

I will probably end up using shipping containers for additional security but would like open plan buildings in which to site them. What do people find works, a single large barn or a series of bays in a lean-to? Does anyone have experience with Farmplus or equivalent kit buildings? Cheers

Yard Layout

Right, I need some advice. I currently rent some barn space for machinery storage but my landlord is looking to lease the whole building to a single tenant and will ultimately be hoofing me out. However, they have offered me another part of the site to have as a wood yard. There is currently a small steel framed barn with open sides which will probably stay and some derelict pig sheds which will go leaving some hard standing. I need / would like secure covered storage for the machinery including a tractor and forwarding trailer (minimum internal length 38'), some form of hardstand and cover for a mobile mill (which could be the existing barn athough the central steel pillars would make loading / unloading awkward) a series of mono pitch / lean-to buildings for drying firewood and milled timber, and a yard for storing and processing round timber. What I would like to know is: Does anyone out there have a good set up for housing a mobile / semi-static sawmill that provides shelter & security but allows ease of use without extensive set-up each time it is used? What simple lean-to buildings are people using for drying firewood / timber? Are these DIY or commercially available agricultural buildings? Dimensions and pictures would be fantastic. What size of yard do people find is sufficient for small-scale firewood processing and sawmilling. There is plenty of space but my rent will depend on how much I use so don't want to be greedy. Any suggestions or experiences of what works or doesn't would be great.

Sorry for the private message but I wanted to contact people actually involved in mobile milling. I run a small forestry contracting business in Oxfordshire and I am thinking of purchasing a mobile sawmill. The yard where I currently rent space is being developed into a number of small units for wood based businesses (timber framers, carpenters, furniture makers etc.) so there would potentially be a ready market for sawn timber. I have the means to fell, extract and transport timber but not to convert it.

I confess to knowing little about milling but I wonder, if you were purchasing a new bandsaw mill, what makes and models would you consider? Wood-mizer seem to have the biggest market share but I have heard poor reports about customer service and after-sales. What extra features are worth having and which are gimmicks? I would need it to be mobile but it may spend much of its time set up in the yard.

I would really appreciate any advice you could give. Many thanks

10. So why do Stihl provide a patch of material with new chainsaw trousers if DIY repairs are so contentious?
11. Dirty contacts on emergency stop toggle . . . at least I hope that's all it is, will know by tonight! Cheers for all the advice. Nick
12. I've ruled out blown fuse as the rocker switch worked intermittently a few times before it completely died. I like the sound of the wire to the sensor being dislodged as there was some brash that had hooked up near the PTO. A cheap simple solution would nice!
13. At the end of a long day extracting timber the rocker switch that engages the PTO clutch on my Valtra 6300 stopped working, any ideas? Cheers, Nick
14. £8 / tonne unless its's small awkward stuff then a bit more.
15. Add my vote for the Roberts Sport, I've had mine for about 6 years now, use it to listen to TMS and 6 music in the truck and tractor via aux in lead and through headphones when working. Lasts at least 2 days on an overnight charge, is small and light, I got a leather case for it to give it a bit of protection, aerial is a bit flimsy but headphone lead / aux in lead gives better reception anyway.

Hornets

OK I need some advice. I've got to fell a large turkey oak covered in weeping black lesions with a big cavity at the base that is threatening a nearby stable block. When I went to look at it there were hornets buzzing around the base of the tree strongly suggesting a nest within the trunk. The tree is in a public park, is considered dangerous and is in an area noted for veteran native oaks so was probably due for removal with or without the cavity. The tree can be straight felled from the ground, probably with the aid of a winch to be sure to take it away from the stable block, but is there any DIY method for destroying the nest because I don't fancy cutting into it with the saw!! I thought about getting on site and running a hose from the van's exhaust into the base of the tree and sitting there with the engine running while I have a coffee, or else emptying a few cans of wasp killer into the tree. Failing that what will a pest control company charge to remove the nest? Sorry if this sounds brutal but the tree has to go and if I'm the one felling it then so do the hornets!!
17. There is a version that I have that is even simpler. If you look through the eyepiece and point it at the ground the wheel has 2 scales one labelled 10m and one labelled 15m. You literally stand with your back to the tree, walk out either 10m or 15m, turn round, sight the top of the tree using the appropriate scale (keep both eyes open) and read off the height. All you need to do is to remember to add the height from horizontal (eye height) to the ground - usually 1.5m on level ground or take it away if the ground slopes upwards between you and the tree.
18. Go on then - quick derail - I'm in the market for some new wire for my winch, where do people get it from, any recommendations? Cheers Nick
19. What's the story with Husqvarna warranty? I have heard that the warranty is with the point of sale which should encourage more people to support their local dealer rather than have to deal with a warehouse at the other end of the country when something goes wrong. I have been pricing up a new saw and my local dealer, who I am keen to support and who has a good reputation when it comes to servicing and technical help, can't get near the on-line prices because he doesn't buy in bulk and get the highest discount from Husqvarna. I was wondering what he would say if I rolled up with an F R Jones saw with a warranty issue?

ecology reports

The "incidental result defence" was removed in 2007. This basically said that if a bat roost was disturbed as an unintentional consequence of a lawful action, such as felling trees covered by a felling licence, you couldn't be prosecuted. But European legislation removed this defence. If you disturb a roost no matter how unwittingly you can be prosecuted. There is loads of guidance on the FC webpages about European Protected Species Habitat Regs covering bats, doormice, great crested newts etc. Nick
21. Does anyone out there have a number for a reliable plant haulage / low loader driver based in Oxfordshire / Buckinghamshire or thereabouts? I need to move my tractor and forwarding trailer which is 38 feet long. Cheers Nick
22. Jim Good call, you're spot on there, I just found a picture of an INO Elite L and it's the same machine just without the reversing kit. What's more Border Plant Sales' list price for a new 190 is £2,750!
23. Does anyone know anything about this Bomford flail. The dealer can't tell me much and neither can Bomford. It is not in their current range, all I know is that it is an Agri ADL 1600, but the usual Google searches don't help. I wonder if it's another manufacturer's that has been re-badged?
24. Cheers Tom Is yours the FRKR, MTKR or BTKR? Thanks Nick
