  1. Remember what the dormouse said
  2. I was more into folk blues including cohen, dylan, pentangle, davy graham, lightfoot, than heavier stuff but liked Grace a lot after Woodstock, I will have been with US conscripts in Germany for a short while then listening on the 8 track to Steppenwolf, Lauden wainright, Arlo Guthhrie, Buffalo springfield, Beacon street union, Doors to name but a few. ( Ruby was banned on the base). Overall I was optimistic, only now do I realise how misplaced, who could have thought things would get so much worse.
  3. I guess I heard Jimi's version long before Dylan's original, always liked it especially for the lyrics, rooted in Ecclesiastes I think.
  4. The simplicity of those single plane push rod V8s is what appeals to me about them. It's what I'd chose if I wanted tens of hp, else for one hp a B&S (spit) side valve. In fact a long time back I came across an article about a guy who was running a V8 on steam, the exhaust exited via the coolant galleries to keep it all warm. IIRC this was one using a bump poppet activated by the pistons to allow high pressure steam in at eitheh side of TDC.
  5. Things are bound to have come on in the gasification field over the last 80 years especially with modern control electronics The cost advantage must be considerable now. Any more details available?
  6. there are some among us who think life is but a joke
  7. Good luck with that. Modern engines are intolerant of dirty fuel and people don't expect to have to take the head off (easy with an old side valve engine) and scrape off the tar deposits every thousand miles. It did look like a group in California were getting close to producing a clean offgas of CO and H2 but even they went quiet, as have the earlier posters on this thread. PC20 Power Cube - ALL Power Labs WWW.ALLPOWERLABS.COM The Power Cube PC20 is a sensible solution to the critical global need for low-carbon energy, using agricultural and... It would be interesting to see a hierarchy of heat to motive power devices to compare comparative performance. I'll start with the proposition that steam turbines don't compete under about 600hp. An eccentric but prolific self taught engineer in Ireland is posting a series of his Heath Robinson but serious attempts to generate dry steam from wood and power a cylinder for a small railway engine,
  8. I'm not familiar with these kilns but is there not a fan blowing fresh air into the kiln?
  9. Mostly inability to pay competitive wages as the business loses work. The thing is, unless you've bought a lemon secondhand out of warranty, cars are incredibly reliable and have long service intervals so cheaper to replace a vehicle at 8-10 years old than repair it.
  10. It's what I believe and think I said earlier in the thread but I don't know of any cases that would have set the precedent.
  11. An old thread but just saw a wannabe youtube millionaire set forth on this subject from 1minute 17 seconds in
  12. The way the bark is trying to flake off a plane, possibly oriental
  13. Huh I didn't realise it wasn't and Irish company, still better than chinese
  14. My take is that is an actionable nuisance so crack on, best of luck getting the costs off of the owner but you might just make a case for defraying some cost by selling the wood. I don't think so, felling licences were originally to stop trees which were a strategic reserve being prematurely felled, I'm not at all sure of the reasoning behind requiring a permission for dealing with windblow. Dunno but nothing to do with the gardener just between the forest authority and landowner. See above I guess the landowner could reasonably foresee they will fall on the neighbouring garden and thus he would become liable for damage and abating the nuisance.
  15. What happened to Tillotson, I'd have been far happier buying the bits from Ireland. The thing is it works and I'll hardly ever use it so simply not worth fettling it.
  16. Snot mine. This one was brought in for repair and only needed a ring but once running the young lady didn't want it back. It is by no means immaculate and the carb could do with overhaul as it is a problem to start from cold which I put down to poor pump diaphragm. Once running it's fine.
  17. I know what you mean, when I first saw his little pelton I thought that's strange I thought impulse turbines were efficient at very high heads and below that you were better off with reaction devices, like francis turbines or even archimedes screws. What sort of flow and head do you have available, if any fish on the scene then archimedes screw seem to do least damage. The thing is at the single dwelling level apart from solar panels there's not much done. Now we're into spring my PV is producing quite nicely but I'd still like a small thermal electric device to make up for shortfalls . Micro hydro or wind are not possible here
  18. It arrived safely this morning thanks Steven
  19. I missed mine so much when he died I swore I would not have another dog, now thanks to my granddaughter I have two frenchies and the dalmation cross to look after depending on her shift pattern
  20. Kris Harbour gets a lot o mentions and he is going into business making micro turbines Micro Hydro Shop | Kris Harbour WWW.KRISHARBOUR.CO.UK
  21. Yes the world has changed, I picked up a new £1400 series 3 station wagon in 73 for the farm, I was given it in 80 and ran it till about 90 when it was given to an my employee at the time for offroading. It was slow, uncomfortable and thirsty and I wouldn't want it again, the 110 was a massive leap forward and I'd happily have that now over a Hilux or ranger but it was still uncomfortable.
  22. Exactly but there must remain an opening for a basic utility vehicle without all the frills but with ABS, airbags, collision avoidance and other safety items.
  23. That's as I see it but more eloquently laid out as becomes a professional report writer.
