  1. Perhaps create a survey and re-post? I'd be veryinterested in your results. Though not an Arb business start up issues can be pretty similar. Alex
  2. As a business I'd look into leasing the paddocks out. As some one who loves trees I think you'd be eligable for the highest level of grant funding under the woodland creation grant scheme. Get in touch with your local woodland officer, make them a cuppa and give them some biscuites. They will talk you though the process and what you can/cant do. If you're up for the paperwork, if not you could get intouch with a forestry agent... Ahem....
  3. ATC, Good on you for sticking with the thread. A few harsh words here. As has been mentioned give the fuel tank a rinse with mixed 2stroke fuel a few times. maybe a new spark plug would be a good idea. You could even replace the fuel filter as this might be a tad gunky aswell. (Get a stiff piece of wire, make a hook and fish the fuel line out of the tank to change the filter) I only passed my cs30/31 a week ago and the only question I was asked about fuel was "What fuel does the saw use?" and the only answer the dude would accecpt was 50-1 we were not shown how to mix fuel and neither was there any dialog about what issuse you could have with your fuel. That said I carry a 20l jerry can marked "Clean fuel" and mix 2-stroke fuel in a 5l combi can. but this only lasts me a day maybe an hour into the following day at the most so no degradation issues for me really. Let us know how you get on, just try and give your system a good flush first. Regards Alex
  4. By the sounds of things it really depends on the office and the person you speak to in the office. I made an online enquiry, I was called the following morning by the chesterfield branch, had a conversation was called in the afternoon and quoted £550 for 2k in kit, pl to 5 mil. No climbing, just planting/fencing/taffifing and ground based felling but was then recomended to try a local broker as the chap from the nfu thought this was too expensive. He was right. £250. Will ad kit and vehicles and El as needed. With rough quotes (With a 10% each way possible variance) in writing. Not a great business practice but excellent customer service.
  5. During christmas tree sales I used to knock out 10k bags at £5 a bag. The city folks on holiday snap em up. Would easily get through 5-7 tonne depending on the weather.
  6. Think I've got a couple floating around. If you are going to use them you need well preped ground, almost branchless plugs. I found it easier to use the putki to make the hole then drop the plug in by hand rather than down the tube. But easier still with a good spade. Most of the planters I've met/know still use a good planting spade instead though being mechanised it might be a way around the GMLA...
  7. Read the job/person spec as the answers to the interview questions will be in there, always repeat what you've said on the application form in any interviews as it won't counted unless you say it. Know your shizzle and relax. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=53.202039,-1.221726
  8. On a plus note, you never have to go to London again, Jonesie can send you your toys....
  9. Good call on Fr Jones. I bought my saw from there and am currently on my CS30/31. I was able to get to them and sign the form. But they offered to send my saw to the course provider instead. Give them a ring and check with your provider and you'll have a shiny new saw for when you start your course. Alex
  10. Easy, there's only one. (Sell her a one cube log)
  11. In my previous (but limited) knowledge of these situations I'd suggest to the customer to contact the company responsible for the line and see if they'll deal with it. You wont make any money but the customer might be pleased as it won't cost them anything. Whilst I was working for the FC we kept 2 tree lengths away from all lines unless there was an outage during a harvessting contract. Any other line clearance was done by the utility company with no cost to us (Despite being our planted trees causing the issue).
  12. Hi DN22, I've sent you a pm. I'm In Shirebrook (Mansfield) give me a ring if there's anything I can do for you. Alex --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=53.202032,-1.221733
  13. Will have 30/31 (Hopefully) done by the end of the month. Have own saw and ppe. Can travel a reasonable distance if required. Can also plant/fence if you have the work, Short notice/long days fine by me. Pm or call 07825129504 Cheers, Alex
  14. Truck Driver Training, PSV training, hgv training, lgv training I have to admit it made no real sense to me either, but I found myself in a lengthy discussion on this subject with the company mentioned above as I was considering taking a B+E test and it was highlighted that unless I was using it for a car + caravan affair it's pretty redundant as to tow over 4.5t you need c1+e. Apologies for the confusion, that's what you get for trusting a someone. From the DVLA. "Category B+E: Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM towing trailers over 750kgs MAM Category B+E allows vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM to be combined with trailers in excess of 750kgs MAM. In order to gain this entitlement new category B licence holders have to pass a further practical test for category B+E. There is no category B+E theory test. For driver licensing purposes there are no vehicle/trailer weight ratio limits for category B+E." Apologies
  15. Total vehicle weight for a post 01/01/97 licence including the trailer is 4.5t. So if vehicle weights (On a vosa/police) weigh bridge 3.5t you can only tow 1t, if it's over that you'll proberbly get shafted. if the vehicle weighs 2.5t you can tow upto 2t depending on the towing vehicles specs. Does that make a bit more sense? I understand it the if you've a pre 97 licence then it goes on the tow weights for the vehicle.
  16. The issue with a b+e licence is that you're still limited to a maximum of 4.5t gross vehicle weight. Go for the biggest licence you can as you can always get extra work driving if you ever needed to.... The Digi card/cpc/and medical once you hit 45 don't add up to that much when you consider the investments made for tools and equiptment to work in this industry. Alex
  17. I guess if you want a shiny helmet the dishwasher is a pretty neat way to go. If you dont have one another way could be cold water with Milton (Baby bottle stereliser) used to work wonders for my kayaking kit inc wet suit boots and helmet. Just dunk it in, leave it for a bit the hang up to dry.
