  1. Have you tried a pair of these before Ian? Are they comfy enough?
  2. I'm looking to see if anyone uses goggles that are mesh so they don't steam up, and use an elasticated strap rather than arms (as the arms always gouge a hole out of my brain!)? I use a mesh visor and still regularly get shavings in my eyes. I can't afford the down time to keep going to A&E (twice in the past 6 months now). This is a real issue/problem and it needs to be fixed. If anyone has any recommendations it would be very useful.
  3. No tricks in landscape maintenance mate! Just smart planning and hard work.
  4. Are you local to Beecraigs? I used to live in Linlithgow and did a lot of mountain biking in the park as it was so local; could nip out for an hour and a half rather than get in the car and drive somewhere first. Love that place.
  5. Here's a bit of advice - never, EVER ever say, on a publically-accessible forum, that you intend to do undeclared work. You pi55 off just 1 person and they are going to shop you. This could end your business, bankrupt you, and ruin your life. Any landscape maintenance work is viable, you just need to make it so.
  6. Just finished 30 and 31 with Chris White last week and got the assessment tomorrow. Good course; I just wish these courses were focussed on amenity tree work rather than forestry. My course and assessment was £800 in total, booked through SAC.
  7. I find this comment very unusual...glyphosate is taken up during growth, it is translocated via water transfer through the plant, which is at it's peak during early growth. The best time to spray is on very juvenile plants when leaves are soft and growth is fast. Perhaps you have sprayed in wet weather and found poor results but not linked it to the rain? I don't expect many people would be happy letting you wait for the weed to flower before treating...and a continued application programme is always preferred due to the nature of the plant, not just one spray in autumn.
  8. This is not true. I suggest you buy some glyphosate and spray it whenever it appears. If there are green leaves visible then glyphosate will be effective. Plan to spray roughly every 6 weeks right through from april-october next year. You may have to treat indoors if it comes up through the foundations, just wear gloves and dab glyphosate on the leaves if so. It is still a plant that undertakes photosynthesis at the end of the day and weed killers do kill it for good.
  9. Good to hear. I'm doing my CS30 and 31 next week with the SAC over in Bathgate and hope to book in 38 and 39 too. I do contract maintenance but wish to deal with the simpler tree enquiries instead of passing them on.
  10. There is no need/point in treating the plant with pesticide once the stems are cut as it is, by virtue of not being in the ground, already dying. As said above, leave it for as long as is needed (if the client will allow) and just tug it off when dry. You can rub off the dead dry tendrils with a normal stiff brush and while this won't be perfect it will be ok. Any work on the wall after this is down to buildings maintenance!
  11. It's obvious that you don't own a business from those unrealistic figures! Unless your irony has been lost on me.
  12. I was taught during my B+E that it allows you to drive a 3.5T MAM TOWING VEHICLE with whatever trailer is allowable with that vehicle, i.e. it could be a 3.5T transit with a 2.7T trailer. Always seems to be some confusion and it would be good if the information available was clearer. I am saying only what I have been taught, not stating this as fact. If you need to use a vehicle with GVW over 3.5T then you will need more than B+E. I have a transit and a 2.7T trailer and B+E covers me. I paid around £300 for it incl. the test fee about 1.5 years ago though so if you shop around you may pay less. I don't see myself ever needing an upgrade on this licence but I don't take down big trees!
  13. This is a small and quick job, but well done for trying to get into it. I would charge £80 or so if I were you. Be done in no time, mattock/pick axe, spade plus a petrol saw. I'd guess you would be done by lunchtime.
  14. Get small jobs and get cash from them, buy new things when you can afford to. It's the most secure way to get into business and allows you a solid grounding at all times.
  15. Avoid both, they are seriously annoying companies to get involved with. You will get constantly plagued FOREVER if they ever get your details. Think 5-6 sales calls a day if you ever leave, think letters and emails giving you special offers, think getting a call saying they can give you an ad for £200 when you have literally just spent £400 on the exact same thing, having been told it was a special offer. For your own peace of mind and sanity, stay away. There are far better safer ways to get work, such as your own website.
  16. Ask if the boss has adolescent daughters!
  17. I wouldn't buy a domestic machine for commercial duties. Maybe look for a good used etesia, kubota or similar instead.
  18. I use a podium step junior and it's great. I can move it easily on my own, folding it takes about 60 seconds and it's a very secure unit for use on slopes or any surface. I am not sure on the price they charge for them but I would recommend them.
  19. Hi Martyn, if you need occasional labour have a look at the message I just posted at http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/employment/34213-occasional-groundworker-available-dec-feb-glasgow-sensible-qualified.html#post546199 Glasgow based and looking to work a little bit with a tree business for various reasons.

  20. I am looking to do a bit of groundwork through the winter to gain a bit of knowledge of the industry to compliment my ground maintenance business. Max 2 days per week due to contract work keeping me pretty busy otherwise. Doing cs30/31 early Dec and have own PPE, basic saw, professional attitude. Based in North Glasgow. Happy to work with someone referring work long term both ways as I am always being asked for someone to do large trees, and I am expanding the maintenance business. I just want to be able to take down, limb and otherwise work on smaller trees, just gain a bit of confidence with it really. I can be contacted via http://www.danfrazergardening.co.uk or pm here. Regards Dan
