  1. Now there are some gruff ol climbers who would say you had it too easy too soon lad! The spiderjack looks to make climbing even easier than the hitch climber... am I right?
  2. Cheers peeps!! Great that so many responded. I'm gathering VT and Hitch climber are the things I should look into first... then spiderjack when I get to somewhere I can have a play with one. I didnt manage to get to any shows last year, maybe this year I should make a better effort! So my next question... which is the best show to see new climbing kit??? Muchos gracias amigos!!
  3. I'm self employed, I'm the main climber, I was taught to climb the ol fashioned way. I try to spare the time to keep up with the gadgets and gizmos you all waffle on about but can't decipher the 'life changing kit' from the 'expensive for just showing off' stuff. I just got a petzl sequoia (brilliant for ladies) I love it, was on a butterfly before that that killed my hips. I use a rope with a blake hitch, and a steel core with a clogger. Simples (I cringed as I typed that, flipping merkats!!). What I really want to know, out of all these hitches and fancy alloy bits, what is actually useful. What new kit have you bought recently that you would not be without/couldn't be without now you have it. Tell me why as well, No one word answers please! I really would appreciate it, there seems to be a sea of this stuff out there! Thanks Chaps & Chapessess. Ginja
  4. I have two years left on my fdsc, my associate membership has lapsed unfortunately. Providing i pass the fdsc in two years time and renew my associate membership now what level will i be. I thought i would be a level4, but has that now changed? Goal post moving is very confusing!
  5. I like it! What timber is it?
  6. Thanks all. Uniform on order. No vests.
  7. You shouldn't be under the influence of anything at work, but what you do in your spare time is up to you. I don't condone breaking the law (none of you seem to give a stuff about that!) but I don't think drugs testing in the work place is needed. Most people can tell when someones off their head, I think if I caught one of the lads under the influence while working I'd send him home and decide whether or not he would be coming back at all. Its not big and its not clever. It can permanently change who you are - thats enough isn't it?
  8. I'm feeling a bit bad as I felt I had to tell an employee her vest top wasn't appropriate clothing for our job for two reasons:- 1. I'm concerned that her skin is exposed to sun, stings, resins, saps, rough bark etc when working 2. Her cleavage isn't something I want my customers to remember us for (not that I said that). A couple of the customers have commented on her attire and not in a flattering way. I'm a lass, I wear a climacool base layer that is, er, figure hugging I guess, but my skin is safe, I rarely get snagged on stuff. I have told the lads in the past that vest tops aren't suitable, even if it is really hot weather. Have I done the right thing? Am I going to have to insist on company tshirts/uniform to avoid this in future? Someone make me feel better! lol
  9. when you are sat on arbtalk at 1.40am because you can't sleep for all the little things you forgot to do because there aren't enough hours in the day to be the main climber, run the business, study for a degree in arb and have a relationship with your other half. When you can't sleep because no matter which way you lie something blinkin hurts! When you drive round looking up at trees rather than at the road. When newbies are very annoying.
  10. Has anyone else had chance? Is it just me that when I change to my carving bar, the phone rings and I have to do 'proper' work?
  11. I've done a few since hard winters, 95% sure it was frost damage as no evidence of anything else in any of them. Nada!
  12. I got this funding last year and I'm able to apply again this year, it really is a great help, I wouldn't be able to do the training as I couldn't afford the time off and the training costs otherwise. brilliant for us ladies, but a bit of a slap for the chaps! :-S
  13. Old, young, male, female, it doesn't matter one bit. You have to have the physical ability, mixed with the determination, desire to constantly learn and respect for the subject of our profession to do this job. If you're missing any one of these you will struggle to do the job properly. You could be physically born to do the job, but if you can't learn to prune properly or identify a disease, then you may as well give up before you start wrecking mature trees. rant over
  14. Indeed, Bucko was my fella, the business will always be in his name. Still associated with thelly, he's my best pal. Willaston? Get off my Patch! There seems to be more work in willaston than anywhere! Plenty to go round I was in stapeley today, Copper Beech reduction x 3, good day
  15. It wasn't you, my brother just set me right! Nantwich matey, I think we occasionally wave in passing. We're Buckland Tree Care
  16. My Gixxer - cheers for pointing me towards a biker thread Janey
  17. Brilliant analogy, when strength is required and you just dont have it you have to think outside the box. Good Stuff Old Mill!
  18. Can I join in as and when I can? I got a carving bar for my birthday in May and have managed to use it for an hour and a half! And on the same lump of wood, my first attempt is a cows head... there was one looking at me over the fence...might have bitten off more than I can chew!
  19. Now there's a thought, I could you the cameras we use on the motorbikes on track days, they're pretty dinky. But as you say, remembering to get it out of the van and the risk of it getting splattered might be a problem!
  20. Janey:thumbup:, You're only as old as you feel, and we all feel old and knackered at the end of a hard day! The other saying is your only as old as who you feel, which makes me 32 instead of 33! yeah!lol All this talk of girls making brews, i'm not approving of this, who the hell has time onsite for brews!!! You lot aren't working hard enough! hmmmm cake
  21. Is that the Mr Bell who went on my brothers stag do? With my fella? and my Cousin? And Dave & Big Andy? If so who's the lass coz if she's round our way we should meet for a beer to winge about sexist attitudes in the industry!!!
  22. I did try once, but they weren't interested. Plus they'd just get in my way! Can you imagine a program about all us little tree botherers scurrying around the country and all the dramas you boys seem to have? I reckon it would be interesting viewing. But when I spoke to them they were more interested in a program about blokes decorating the house while their lasses were away! BORING!
