  1. Where is his gloves:thumbdown: Are you puting him through his training:confused1:
  2. This subject is not black and white although using reference material percentages can be obtained as a guide but with many variables. Much can be found by sounding alone with a nylon hammer before resorting to expensive and invasive methods. Actual evidence of the Armillaria would be required to diagnose this and a comprehensive report with a body of evidence is required to build a case for the removal of preserved trees. Source a local experienced consultant to provide an acuarate assessment for the client. There has been too many accidents. You don't want that over your head. Tree Life, Systen provide training in these matters:thumbup1:
  3. Photinia Red Robin. Suppliers: Hedges Direct or Barchams in Cambs for the bigger specimens.
  4. Look for the spelling mistake of one species in the AA fungi on trees field guide!
  5. You should take books as listed on the pre-course hand out as these are good reference material unless you can resite them word for word. I took all including many more for my arsenal which served me well. If you do not have experience/knowledge of Fungi and tree Ident including the spelling of, then the books are a must have. Read as much as you can to refresh before you go. Knowledge of how the books are to be used is also necessary precourse. I stayed in a B+B during the course and didn't take the laptop. This was a mistake. The course handout does not require a laptop but it is useful in the evenings.
  6. Success with the PTI. Thanks to you guys for the advice. Tree Life Syston, Leicester provides a very high standard of training.
  7. Vermeer 352/372 The new vermeer models have the work position defice fitted that disengages the clutch when you let go of the controls with BOTH hands so you can step aside to have a look safely! The anti stress is that reliable that I do not need to look at the cutter head to know where in the stump the head is. Hands on the machine is far more efficient and accurate. Especialy near objects. Most machines requiere you to reduce the oil flow speed to grind safely where as with manual valves you can litraly feed the oil through your fingers and with good material you can grind in high speed and manover quite quickly. We removed over 30, 1 meter average diameter stumps and leveled the site yesterday in 4 hours with no effort for one operator.
  8. 346xp:thumbup:
  9. Cheers guys:thumbup: will do

  13. Good one, Ill adopt that strategy. Cheers Hamadryad
  14. Cheers Terry Their the light reading ones, they dont weigh the barrow down to much. I like them.
  15. I notice that a few fungi have new or alternative names. e.g. Ganoderma adspersum = G australe! Is there many more like this?
  16. Thanks for the response Ciaran, I do not have a fungi ident list. only a list of reading material, so the list would be great:001_smile:. I am limited localy for life examples but the Fungi pics and discussions posted here at Arb Talk are great for revision:001_smile:. Any advice on areas for notes would be great to focus my revision and time spent!. I have most of the next week set aside to prepare. 15 years since I completed college, am really enjoying learning again! Thankyou for any help you can offer:thumbup: Tony
  17. PTI 3 day course in a week. Have been walking around with a 'weel barrow full of books' for the past few weeks in prep. Has anyone got experience advice on the course and preperation? Thanks in advanced Tony
  18. Trust insurance sent our remewal through today for transit 52plate any driver over 25 is £620. Looking my self for a better quote. Cheers tony
  19. For years we ran a Rayco RG20 and found a need to upgrade. I used most models in my search and found the one that stood out was the Vermeer 352, by far the safest and delivered the power more effeciently. My only issue was that it got stuck on slopes and wet ground. I enquiered and had a new model delivered 4*4 / diff-lock with a blade on the back to clear the mulch. Great:thumbup: Will never look back. Engine is 35hp turbo and will run all day with 40l desiel. Have removed over 350 spruce stumps average 10 inch diameter in one day! Takes yellow jacket teeth that can be sharpened. Cheers Tony
  20. Hi Ed, I recently became both a Lantra Awards 'Lantra' and also City & Guilds Trainer & Assessor. I too, was concerned about this subject:confused1: But their was no need:001_rolleyes: All chain manufacturers produce chains with Pitch, Gauge and Cutter type not disimilar to Stihl. A few 'od' looking gaurd links admitted. I revised by identifying chains by visual inspection only. (no calipars). Many chain manufacturers give ident numbers, symbols to reference angles and depth gauge settings but with a bit of practice you can ident all chains by eye, even the side plate angle! Get down to your local husky dealer and ask to have a look at their old chain bin. We learn by doing. Good luck.
  21. I have been using mine for a year now. I must agree with David G its not great for blocking down as the working end needs to be tight to the running line (idealy through a CS pully or small diameter branch). When putting weight back onto it, the running line beneath the jack needs raising to tilt it so it locks! When installing into a crab it requires locking in place from both sides with rubber or side loading can occur if it drops down the shaft of the crab. This doesn't look good when side loaded:001_unsure: I have been alternating between the SJ and the Knots. i.e. Knut, Michigan, Distal, VT. In wet weather the SJ is supreme but in dry weather the Knut is my fav (it always locks:thumbup1:). All of the soft hitches are as good if set correctly and much cheaper.
  22. Has been a great day at the Arb show, HB was the busiest stand and seemed to have the best deals. Still playing with my new TM harness and all the usual shiny bits! New Stihl top handle saw, best price again HB, even gave us a beer whilst we waited in the queue, top blokes, thanks for a great day. Hope everyone enjoys tomorrow! 23. Who do you get the appointed person ticket through and do they include the crane supervisors ticket? I looked into it a few years ago but thought better of it. It looked too costly at the time. We may only use a crane 5 days in a year.
  24. Of course a contractor works under your employers Liability. I have been involved with a few crane jobs now and there are no margins for error. Just look on youtube 'crane accidents' to see some horrors! Banksman with cert of comp is required to direct movements and loading of the crane correctly to cover insurance validation for the lift. With my guys in the past, when intoducing a new crane operator or climber to a team, we do a few test lifts in a safer environment away from the work site and without the pressures of time and cost. It has proven invaluable for those far to reach places! Would love to see some pics.
  25. Can recommend the spider jack for working from small branch diameter or cambium saver but always revert to friction knots when working on larger diameter timber i.e. blocking down stems.
