  1. I had always wondered how you came to have two heads Alec but thought it rude to ask.
  2. Does anyone know what's going on with this Ash tree? It's in the middle of an ancient woodland, growing out of a very old hand dug drainage ditch. It is blistered all the way up and is reasonably substantial. I was wondering if it might have interesting grain inside?
  3. What do you use to split the cord Nicholas? Logan is working on a similar machine at the moment. Might be worth a PM for advice.
  4. I'm with you there Shavey. I got mine on the logical assumption that I could increase productivity by felling two trees at the same time. Three years have I tried in vain.
  5. The problem with being intellectually challenged Dave is that one is obliged to find tools which are comparable in simplicity to the operator. With some trepidation I treated myself to a hammer last year. Can I work out how to use the bloody thing! God only knows why they have to make these devices so bloomin complicated.
  6. I think you can get a flotation tyre option on them. Do you think this would have made any difference?
  7. 40" sounds like plenty, thanks Ian. If the Tree was leaning more than that I think I'd let it go where it wanted. I'm only planning on 'tweaking' the ones with a small unfavourable lean.
  8. Cheers Ian. Are they only used for sending back learners in the opposite direction or can you Jack them over at any angle? If that makes sense!
  9. Geoff? I did all my sawing with the one I had on loan so haven't actually used the new PTO one yet! The saw runs at 350 rpm so I hope my 50hp tractor should run it OK.
  10. Yeah, I saw that one but it doesn't look like they make it any more which makes me a bit wary.
  11. Plenty of time to come up with daft ideas whilst charcoal making!
  12. So, felling season has come around again in t' wood and I'm looking at low tech tools to make life easier and save the back. I'm particularly interested in the Tree Jack and the Junior Fetching Arch from Orion Heating and would be very interested to hear anyone's opinion on them. All thoughts gratefully received:thumbup:
  13. Cheers Ben:thumbup: I think we're all top blokes in Steve's wonderful world of tree folk! Except Matelot of course. Don't like him very much, but then again, he probably likes that!
  14. Have you considered buying a small ring kiln (much cheapness) for converting your low value coppice wood Steve?
  15. Just the jobbie Timbernut, and a perfect case in point.
  16. Judging by the number of posters on the walls and the meticulous work that had gone into the shrine, I imagine the loss will be deeply troubling.
