  1. Hi Jim, Would my tractor run one of those? What hydraulic couplings does it need?
  2. To be honest I think I personally would struggle to make a living off 40 acres, but on the plus side, I am an idiot! It would really come down to what you needed to earn. I have a mortgage to pay and a financially crippling sweetie habit. I do make a living but have 200 acres to play with. I keep things very simple and only produce firewood and charcoal in any quantity. If you think outside the box a bit and have good marketing skills you can add a lot more value to wood. One example would be Swedish candles. Each of your pine trees could fetch upwards of £150 as candles and maybe £30 as firewood. Things like wood turning blanks and sawn timber go for good money relative to their size. They take a lot more ingenuity to sell though than firewood. If your financial security would depend on the woodland alone I would advise serious caution. If not then I can guarantee you will have an absolute blast.
  3. Don't actually know which came first but TCF have been making their brash cart for quite a number of years.
  4. I would think a lot would depend on what you are calling a living. Would you have a mortgage to pay? Are you creative ie. can you make value added items or are you just thinking firewood?
  5. However you happened to interpret Gnome's post, the fact remains that it was in very poor taste. Clamouring for recognition that you were the one intelligent enough to understand what was 'really' meant makes you the div in my book egnsean. Sorry Steve, I know we are supposed to be moving on but I can understand why people might think that egnsean is a total plonker.
  6. Have you considered employing the services of a forestry agent. They can take all the headaches out of it for you, dealing with all the permissions, planning, grants and timber sales. With the amount of woodland you have available their costs would easily be covered by the profits and the grants you would potentially be eligible for. You would still be able to choose your own contractor if you wanted and utilise your staff. Where abouts in the country are you?
  7. Shame on you Gnome. That's an awful thing to say.
  8. That is awful! Any chance they can catch the culprit?
  9. Unfortunately that would leave me carrying the can!
  10. Crikey, I didn't realise it cost that much!
  11. Just had a call from the police to say Mr James has been sentanced to two years. Based on past experience he will almost certainly go straight back to his scamming ways on release (probably 11 months or so). If you get approached on the M4 or M5 in 2017 by a man carrying a green petrol can DO NOT STOP, phone the police, and maybe run over his foot if you get the chance:001_smile:
  12. I would agree with that, and also give a special mention to the ancient woodland soils. The tree cover is relatively transient, it's the soils that are truly ancient, containing the irreplaceable mix of inorganic matter, leaf mould, wee beasties and mycorrhizal fungi that is so important to protect and dictates the majority of what materialises above ground.
  13. I took a quick detour on my way back to the Shire from London yesterday, and picked up a Tree Jack III from the very helpful Dr David at Orion. I shall report back when I have used it for a while. Slightly confused as it looks a lot more like a long, thin cardboard box than I was expecting but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. David has a very nice stove showroom and lots of interesting forestry tools on show if you are ever in the Stansted area!
  14. Being an Ash it is probably doomed anyway. Also, the beauty of coppicing is it prolongs the life of trees rather than ends it. There are Ash trees in Bradfield Woods, Suffolk that are getting on for 1000 years old. They are cut down every 25 years.
  15. It's not down for felling, but curiosity might get the better of me!
  16. Pedantic comment alert!! Ferrari, BCS and Pasquali are all the same. Carraro are reputedly a bit more good. Didn't know about the putting it in gear thing. Top tip:thumbup:
  17. The scary cupboard under the stairs!
