  1. Lasers! PEW PEW PEW!!!! Look what it does to STar Destroyers! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmoldX1wKYQ]Laser Weapon System (LaWS) - YouTube[/ame]
  2. It wouldn't matter much either way - both would be very hard once tempered - even some 4000 series steel can be hardened enough to give your tools a tough time. An easy way to tell what it is yourself tho, is to polish some of it. If it takes any luster, it's a high carbon steel like 5160 etc. If it never shines - it's D2. My D2 knife looks like it's made of tin, even once sharpened. Otherwise, you can do a spark test: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D094eBa4S7c]Metal ID - Spark Testing - YouTube[/ame]
  3. This doesn't exactly answer your question, but it's something handy everyone should have, uh, handy; http://www.oregonproducts.com/pro/pdf/tech/barpartnumbersystem.pdf Oh wow, found the motor mount chart I had: Bar Mount Pattern: 03 Chain Saw Collectors Corner Bar Mount Patterns
  4. I would be surprised if it were D2 - that is an air hardening tool steel like M2. Grinding on it is not any fun. Most bars are 4100 series steels. That bar might have been made with 5100 series, which adds vanadium; a common practice since the 60's on lorrie leaf springs. It would make it significantly harder than 4100, but not raise the costs considerably. 4100 can get to an HRc of 55 at most, usually in the 40's. 5160 can see up to 60 RC on that scale. I have a made a few bowie knives with 5160(and some folks wonder why I feel comfortable contouring pop up pistons by hand). Forgot to add - I do have a knife made of D2 with a 5" blade. I have to use a W2 file to contour it before I sharpen it.
  5. AS has been down for nearly a week or so. It's not due up for a couple days still. ST has got some time on his hands...
  6. Their Christmas turkey must be huge.
  7. I model 61 new in the box nearly? That's something that should go up for auction. And use the proceeds to get a decent saw
  8. Leaking fuel from where, the exhaust? It's new, so I would guess the exhaust. It's likely flooded.
  9. And they were ported to race. What ya have is a 'detuned' version of what the tracks saw. Same with your saw. It's a detuned version of what was once available to professionals. That's OK, if it works for you, it works for you. After using the real deal, I just can't go back.
  10. Do me a favor and weigh that pho when ya see one? I'm curious to see.
  11. All of which would make that thing fly if ported correctly. As for your 440 - do not just 'think about' the dual port muffler - do it. The saw was originally designed to run with the dual port(which is available from the factory affordably and is a simple bolt on). It was choked by the EPA afterwards. Your 440 is basically a neutered 044 mag. The dual port muff and a retune will make a huge difference. You spent maybe a few hundred to get 20% more horse power out of your bike? On that 440, you could spend 50 bob and get 20% more power.
  12. That's your retail? I wonder what sort of cylinders they are running...
  13. The current 500ES is a Shindaiwa 502S with some mods in disguise. It is easily muffler modded to produce good power(you simply unbolt the cover and pull out a tube). It weighs about 7 ounces LESS than a 346XP.
  14. Does the 440 have a port out the front of the muffler? Add the factory dual port(a bolt on) and there will be a big difference yet again. You also want to clean or replace both spark arrestors.
  15. It doesn't. In fact, it's less likely to crack or chip. WHy would the side cover be any less strong than the rest of the plastics when its 5X as thick? Watch the first few seconds of this vid. Thats my 520CS, and that's the typical abuse as I got it for something like $50 in the states and then ported it. The clutch cover hasnt cracked yet. 17. I worked with a guy that used 13/64 on both his 3/8 and 325 chain. Said the 325 lasted longer that way.
  18. Piston Ring for Husqvarna 343 F Fr frm R 345 R RX 345 E 345 F Fr frm 346 XP | eBay I use cabers on my ported saws with aftermarket and oem kits with no issues.
  19. Keep the 440, and have both it and your bike ported.

If it's clean poplar and that is a new XT, it will pull full chisel on a 24" bar through poplar all day no problem.
  22. It cuts faster overall because you spend less time sharpening it. Not because it is faster in the cut. 404 lasts about 20% or more longer. Semi chisel seems to last forever in clean wood. In dirty wood, it lasts even longer than 3/8 than 20% if you ask me. And then you sharpen it, it is easier to sharpen for it's size, and you usually have less cutter to sharpen for a given bar length.
  23. 72DL will work fine on 3/8. That 064 should also be able to run 404 fine on a 20 as well. 7 pin for 3/8 is for longer bars. An 064 is basically a stroked 046, so has a lot of torque by comparison.
