    A bog standard vehicle winch is a better option for a vehicle but you can't also take that into a back garden to move stuff.

    The PCW battery winch works well. Only demoed at a show but still impressive. Treadlight Forestry will sell the Eder equivalent, assuming it exists, which I think it does.

    My accounting system is about a tenner of stationery and works beautifully. A4 week to view diary and four pens: Black - money in Red - money out Green - do something Blue - mileage Ring binder with 52 A4 plastic sleeves, one sleeve per week: A4 pieces of paper are invoices, evidence of money in Smaller pieces of paper are receipts etc, evidence of money out Both go in a satchel. The satchel is opened for every transaction; on the counter in the petrol station, on your lap in the van when your bank app goes bing. Saturday is invoice day; send one to client by e-mail/post, put a printed copy in the folder. Sunday you check the previous six days' paperwork. Monday is the start of a new week. At year end print 12 bank statements and deliver everything to accountant. Quickbooks can swivel. Paper is better.

    Solidarity. Sounds grim. Post where you are in the country. I’m sure there’s any number of people on here who might come and keep you company from time to time, give your wife a night off occasionally.

    I was remarking to a mate earlier on a slightly different motoring matter that we've reached the top of the rollercoaster. Soon, everything is going to be like the Russian/H2G2 shoe factories churning them out joined at the heel. I currently own a 2009 car that is haplessly immobilised because I haven't yet brought myself to pay a 19-year-old with a laptop to come over and sweet talk it and a 2005 van with half the stuff on the back axle shredded by the whims of a twatty ABS sensor. I'm well up for an older vehicle or a horse at this stage.

    If you do decide to halve them, I'm a big fan of production lines. Get some mates with chop saws over and throw them long ones direct from the store to their hands. Be done in no time.

    I too was thinking just grasp the nettle, cut them in half and move over to rubble firewood that all the gay little modern stoves use. I've always cut as long as possible to minimise work and sawdust and so they stack well but I'm more mechanised now and going the other way. Do short logs scoop into a machine bucket better than long ones. I'm not having a lot of luck pushing into piles of long logs with the skidsteer.
