I have a Stihl 039 with a 25" bar running full complement chain. It's just powerful enough but I still wish I'd bought a skip chain. I wouldn't consider running full comp on a 36" bar with it but I would consider doing so with skip. I'd try to get away with a shorter bar before that though. I wouldn't buy inferior cutting equipment whatever. My 25" bar and chains are Stihl. I bought quality (and new) knowing I can put them on a bigger saw when one comes along.

Money spent on QC possibly? Or perhaps some overengineering that you don’t give enough credit to? I’d not heard the hydraulic superiority claim but it’s certainly relevant. Infeed strength, crushing unions etc is hugely important.

The second one looks a big lad! Would I be right in saying Malinois need to be worked more to keep them sane? I’ve found Alsatians pretty easy to please.

Mum’s mum had three Alsatians, mum’s got one now and I’ve known several others so if I had to pick a breed for life, it would have to be an Alsatian. That said, I’m curious about other similar breeds, Belgian Shepherds, Malinois and maybe Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I was even open to Rottweilers for a while but I like the wolfy ones more.

In what regard do you think Schliesing don’t measure up to their reputation? I’ve never x-rayed the welds etc but they’re the chipper I’d least like to hit my shin on. They just feel solid.

Got it. My mum’s Alsatian had ears like that but they sorted themselves out a fair bit before thirteen months. Maybe they’ll sort themselves out still. Nice looking dog anyway.

I’m not blown away by how well Schlieisings chip but that’s not everything. As a thing to own and maintain and send out with blokes who don’t respect your property like you do, I think they’re better than most. Two identical teams would have a down day from breaking a Foerst or Greenmech before they broke a Schliesing. Any reader of this thread also can’t ignore that you don’t sell them and you do sell their competition.

That's true for anything though. If you have a Foerst, bearings etc wear out AND the hopper falls apart. If you have a Schliesing, bearings wear out and that's all. Schliesings are built for long term ownership. Bearings etc are consumable.

I knocked on his door for a cup of tea earlier but he didn’t answer. His van was there. The same horrible thought crossed my mind. I made haste.

End of a long day. Main job finished. Got asked to go and do a quick one branch for another team that didn’t have any climbing kit with them. Half an hour away. Extra cash. Obviously it was an hour away in rush hour traffic and the branch was hanging over a fence, a plastic pond and the corner of the house. Crap tie in. Tiptoed out and got it all done. Everything dropped or rigged perfectly, nothing broken, everybody happy and impressed etc. At about 18:30 I was cleaning up the last step cut (of the extra 10” diameter while-you’re-up-there branch) and tried to pin the chog to the clean face with my finger as the bar fell through. Gravity acted as normal and overcame my meagre digit and I watched in slow motion as the chog smashed a brand new plastic garden storage box. Felt like a total moron. Should have finished it with a silky but was the end of a hot day and I had a long drive to do. I always remember that particular piece of stupid plastic garden tat when I’m about to do something lazy now.

I re-riveted mine with a couple of 2mm snips of heavy copper cooker circuit wire.

Let's not be dicks to the OP. He was being inventive. I've often considered doing similar. Eddie's idea is the closest to the one I'd probably go with. Scaffold boards on the house corners and a length of rope round the whole thing.
