  1. Fair enough I really see your point to be honest. In a forest stuck up a tree alone I imagine it wouldn't be the best of fun. Just so you know I wasn't thinking of it. Id like to set up my own work one day but if I do its way into the future. Thanks
  2. Just interested to see how many arborists work on their own. If not how many people do you work with? and If its a necessity to have a groundsman 100% of the time
  3. Thanks Morten. does look interesting at a glance. I'm actually trying to get into an arb course at a college so that should give me a good grounding and basic knowledge.
  4. Cheers frosty. Ideally id do an apprenticeship but I cant seem to find any at all around the Midlands. Would you say an apprenticeship would be better than a college course?
  5. Yeah i completely agree with you both. Ive actually applied for a 2 year forestry and Arboriculture course at Warwickshire college. Im justreading up on everything. I was actually a bit sceptical about the whole 2 year course, would you say a course this long is unneeded? I just want a decent job in the industry really then to progress to become a good climber then get enough experience to possibly start working for myself. The college also do all the smaller less than a couple of week courses. All from CS30 to CS41 I think. would these be better to do?
  6. Also is descending simple as just feeding the running end slowly through the friction knot? and its just crossed my mind what if the desired crotch is too high to reach with a throw bag and you keep getting it onto a crotch too low? Sorry about all the stupid questions guys im new and i find it really interesting i want to get as much in my head as i can before i hopefully start the college course.
  7. Oh right a lanyard to wrap around the tree in order to lean back when you work? Would that be a single lanyard, and would you use spurs or isn't it needed with a climbing line?
  8. Ive just gone out and brought The tree climbers companion ive been reading through all its packed with information i find it a really good read. I Had a go at a few knots in it and i actually tried out the traditional climbing system. I didnt climb as i dont have a harness yet i just put it on a low crotch and leant back holding the working end. Is it just me or when you pull on the running end and slide the blakes hitch friction knot up it moves, but if you pull back on the working end it does not move, so theoretically could you climb with just the climbing system and a harness then be suspended up the tree without sliding down? Without any additional stoppers or ascenders?

  10. Cheers guys. Looks like ive got some reading to do. Great help thanks
  11. I brought 'The climbers companion' and its a really good read but it only has climbing techniques. Can anyone help me with any decent books on perhaps chainsaw and cutting techniques side of things...or the tree health, growth and disease side of things...cheers by the way ive looked at modern arboriculture and its too expensive so that's out of the picture
  12. Ive seen arborists working on anything from crown thinning to actually cutting sections down the trunk. They seem to be using several different ropes obviously i know the anchor. But what is the one they use to strap from their harness around the tree and back to the harness? Is it an average rope or a strop or a lanyard? Ive also seen them use a similar rope in set of two when climbing first time, alternating between the two ropes whilst gradually getting higher up the branches. What are they using? Sorry about the silly question im new to arboriculture doing a college course next year want as much info as i can get cheers
  13. Very keen. First idea was to go to Warwickshire college and do the Level 3 Arboriculture course but its going to be really tough to fund. I have some experience doing some 'backyard lumberjack' kind of work. I'm really into how everything works even though I cant even scrape the surface of how in depth everything is. I'm basically willing to work for very low wage if the employer is up for fully training me up starting at groundsman working up to climber. Does any body know of any apprenticeship programmes around, or otherwise any large well known Arboricultural companies I can contact for information? Thanks
