  1. Upon leaving college I thought what qualifications would set me apart from the rest of the graduates? One member has already suggested b+e driving licences which does make perfect sense and I will most likely get...I was just wondering does anyone else have any ideas of what would set me apart? cheers
  2. I spose its a catch 22 enit, you need experience to get a job but you need a job to get experience...so the only thing I can really do is just get all my tickets and ask around?
  3. What sort of employment do these companies run? Is it seasonal and full time or do they employ relief workers or what? Ideally id love to be a relief worker whilst im going through arb college...got to get the CS tickets first obviously....
  4. god thats not looking properly for you enit I might give the show a go, just got to sort out the distance
  5. Do you have a website link I can check? Sorry to be a pain but a few came up when I put it into Google. I just thought I would look into it, I thought it cant hurt to give it a go?
  6. Another one of my questionably stupid threads are there actually any forestry contracting companies or logging companies in the UK? Im talking timber harvesting and things like that not tree surgery or arboriculture
  7. You all have good points I think ill wait to get the CS units at college, its alot cheaper. In the mean time ill look into C and E licences and look at little jobs driving here and there. Thanks alot you've opened my eyes to a fair few options
  8. Ive seen a couple of arb companies with lorries around actually I think I'll probably get them licencess :-) does anyone know any good training companies and what sort of prices im goong to be looking at? As im also planning on getting my CS30/31 maybe 32 so i can try and get a job as a ground worker to get myself through college.
  9. Brushcutter do you think that would genuinely help? I am willing to do anything and everything possible to get myself noticed and respected in the industry. My determination and enthusiasm are through the roof. What else would help? Apart from the obvious NPTC's...
  10. My name is Sam Pearson, in Barston, Solihull and I have officially left college so I am seeking employment and can start as soon as required. As stated in the title I will get any NPTC qualifications that you the employer desire. I am looking for any kind of employment at all; labourer/groundsman anything. I am extremely keen on the arboriculture area its been all I have been researching for the last year or so. I am going to college to study Arboriculture at Moreton Morrel in September but I am looking for any type of employment in the area to get a head start and get some experience. Full time, Part time, Permanent, Temporary, anything you require please contact me I am sure we could work something out. I also have a driving licence with no penalty points. I am extremely hard working, will travel anywhere within West Midlands/Warwickshire areas, dependant, enthusiastic and I have extremely good references from my current part time job as a sales assistant, available on request. I have also had experiences of felling 200+ dead elm trees and converting them into firewood. If you are looking for a very hard working, flexible, motivated employee please email me or give me a call: [email protected] 07970 298 286 01675 442 075
  11. Likeitorlumpit your right good point but ive been looking into that apprenticeship quite a bit what are your thoughts on that?
  12. Cheers guys Thats what I kind of thought its just backed it up to be honest I dont really see myself wanting to have any kind of managerial role really. The reason I got into arboriculture is being outside, active and getting down and dirty to be honest ideally an apprenticeship would be perfect for me, but the only one I can find it this one at the same college Warwickshire College | Courses | Arboriculture - Apprenticeship in Trees and Timber (Arboriculture) Level 2 Its basically from what I can see just covers tree felling and ground work not really any aerial work. What sort of options would this open for me? If any?
  13. Mainly aimed those of you who have recruited a few other people. Im going to college in September, I have a place all I have to do now is to decide what level to do. I applied to do level 3, which is 3 times as long as level 2. Id prefer a shorter course like level 2 as ive been at college two years already, and speaking to some people at the college the course content seems to be alot more practical than level 3. If I applied to a company would I actually have much of an advantage if I did level 3 over level 2? if that makes sence, it probably doesnt
  14. Yeah i see your point now. What about if I just want to get used to being in the tree and will only be using single rope technique or possible dynamic set ups? Ive heard rock climbing harnesses are set up differently in that they are designed to catch you if you fall, not to hold you suspended in the air. and for this reason hanging in them can be dangerous? Suspension trauma or something like that?
  15. Cheers guys very informative ill try the prusik defiantly ive got the tree climbers companion its a very good book ill look up the prusik and use that instead. Another thing if you dont mind answering, ive been using a climbing harness from one of my mates that he used to use but i just read up on it and do you recommend getting a proper arborist harness or isnt it necessary until i start using lanyards? (side D rings obviously)
  16. How do I incorporate the prusik into a dynamic climbing line system? I thought it was a single rope technique knot? I know how to tie it, i have the climbers companion book but i cant see it saying you can use it with a dynamic line?
  17. Yeah thats exactly what I did. It must just have been my dressing and setting. But Paul tieing the knots in the bottom of the rope so I dont hit the ground sounds like an extremely good idea, ill mention that to him next time I have a go.
  18. My bad Im confusing at the best of times the knot came loose a couple of times, after coming loose when I tied it the instructor then tied it and it worked. Then when I tried myself again it was coming loose once more and I couldn't see what was different and neither could he.Thats the point he said it might be the rope.
  19. Is that the 'suislide' hitch Steve in the picture? I passed the rope BEHIND the bridge not in front is that right?
  20. Yep that exactly it. It was tight in the first place because it worked, and the instructor tied it first time anyway. It didnt happen every single time i used it just every now and then. But yes essentially it became loose. It must not have been dressed properly, or I must have been pulling down awkwardly to come down and subsequently it came loose?
  21. Yep figure eight knot in the end. Ive climbed on it before with a mate of mine. The instructor checked it too yeah to be fair he seemed like a really good climber. We went to a massive cedar and he was up off the ground and almost right at the top of the tree to put in our ropes before we even got ready, and was moving around the canopy as naturally as he walks on the ground. He checked all my knots and watched me climb up and i was doing it right. He explained that the knot basically just puts a kink in the running end and if the rope is too stiff then it wouldnt work properly. He then explained to try and tighten the knot whilst in the air but i couldnt do it with one hand whilst holding the running end with the other. (so i didnt plumet). I wondered if it was because I was probably the heaviest in the group?
  22. I went on a taster day for the college course i got into last tuesday (it was AWSOME:biggrin:) and we were doing climbing with the traditional climbing system of a bowline and blakes hitch. But i went up the tree and when I pulled the friction hitch towards me to come down the knot became loose and there was no way to stop repelling untill i hit the ground because of it. If i was up very high it could be quite dangerous. The tutor seemed like he really knew what he was talking about and just thought that the rope was a abit old and quite stiff that was the problem, do you lot agree or could it be something else?:thumbup1:
  23. Nope im not threatened by them my dad keeps them in a small holding type thing i just wouldn't like to be stuck in a tree with a hive next to my face as i cut down their home
  24. Anyone ever been attacked by bees or wasps? It occured to me the other day while watching heli loggers (as you do:001_rolleyes:)
