  2. I'm a great advocate of planting a tree suitable for the space but with the demands of modern underground services the space above ground doesn't necessarily reflect the available space below ground. Unless you can persuade utility companies to install conduits to run services through, reduce the necessity to trench a footpath every few years and ensure suitable rooting volume, large tree species are likely to become less popular. From a purely managerial point of view I found our London Planes to be really easy to manage as pollards, only requiring re-pollarding every 5 years and very little in between. Limes on the other hand are a nightmare, constantly requiring epicormic growth removal yearly. Birch and Ginko are great but Japanease Cherry a nightmare for lifting pavements. I have seen Metasequoia and Pines planted in urban / car park situations and find these really interesting alternatives, once lifted about 3/4m they rarely require much further work. Quite why anyone planted Raywood Ash is beyond me, I guess the colour of young trees was attractive but you’re forever sending the gangs out to clear up the mess after any strong winds. I’d quite like to see a few more Coast Redwood’s planted, narrow crowns and impressive in height. They are really underutilised.

  8. How easy is it to work with in the UK? Looks like American software. Also, what is the support like?
  9. Once was ripped off by BT. Bosses phone bill came in and it had an extra £350 for call out charges, his wife found it and went ape thinking we had cut a telephone line on a job . We were adiment it wasn't us and asked BT for details of the site. Turns out we had never worked in the village, let alone the street or house where the line was cut. BT said the client said it was our company, we argued it wasn't and had invoices/diaries to confirm. BT said pay the bill and argue later (no chance mate!). turns out our company was xxx Tree Care and the pikies who did the job had an unmarked van but flyers calling themselves xxx Tree Services. BT just looked through yellow pages and picked the closest matched company to send the bill to! Robbing B***ards.
  10. The guy must of been born with no legs and the ones used are just clever prosthetics. Else he is incredibly flexible!!
  11. Gameweek 30 closes at 11.30 tomorrow morning, don't forget to update your teams!!
  12. Gameweek 29 Closes at 11.30 am this morning, get your team changes in guys!
  13. Fell and replace with a more appropriate species. If they want height but not shade offer a fastigiate species, plenty on the market and if they get you back for a bit of formative pruning every few years you can control the width if it starts getting out of hand. Reduction or other top work is just a waste of time & money (for them, quids in for you), the tree has been hacked back in the past and is a poor specimen, it's only a sycamore after all. Time to let go and start again.
  14. With a wildcard you can make an unlimited number of transfers in one game week without suffering a 4 point deduction per player (you usually get one or two free a week). You can play two wildcards per season, one at anytime and another between gameweeks 21-27.
  15. As per Monkey's request, this is a 18 hour warning, gameweek 28 closes at 11.30 am tomorrow (Saturday) After a fantastic 2 months I now find myself in the position of 3 injuries and 2 not playing, do I hope the 3 Man Utd players I have playing twice will get the extra points and keep the great players I have or do I wildcard?? As they say in F1, you always need to be on the right tyre for the conditions so I should wildcard, but I don't want to mess the team. A few JD I think to help me decide!
  16. Anyone still activly playing this or have people forgotten to update their teams?? There's only 14-15 game weeks left, still time to ctch the leaders!
  17. So over the next 12-18 months, are the lamps, which will be running for 18 hours a day, still going to be cheaper than just going and buying 60cm hedging now (and get an instant effect)?? Seems a lot of effort, especially if you end up as the entertainment for the local cops xmas party when they replay the vid of you bo!!ock naked at 5am trying to explain why you have 200 yew trees growing hydroponically.
  18. BBC's Mike Bushell goes Geo-Caching..... BBC News - Mike Bushell goes geocaching
  19. I agree with Monkey-D, certainly will be S. apiformis. Incredibly common on just about every poplar I have seen in Suffolk. It's mostly found in East Anglia and will often lead to decay in the butt. We lost a pop over a road to this and the scary thing was the top showed no sign of any dieback which you would expect with a stem this decayed. The rot stays low and can be hard to spot, you really need to get down and have a good prod around if you find the holes. Some pics below show what can happen (holes vvisable in 3rd pic)
  20. We found a Gnome living between the butresses of a very old Oak today..
  21. Waking up in the morning with an aching back was the que for me, elspecially as I was only 28 at the time, I was also wanted to learn something new in the industry. My days of climbing trees was long over (popped my kneecaps out of their sockets while climbing on spikes, ouch) and 5 years as a groundie lost it's appeal. Yes I miss being on the tools, but seeing my contractors out on rainy or ice cold mornings makes me glad of the office job, and on real sunny days I can go out surveying meaning I'm still outside. Local Government is no fun though, aside of the current cuts the pace is so slow, everything has to go via a committee or another and you are constantly having to apease the public - ignorant, arogant and insulting people who love to say "I love trees ... but..."
  22. I think the Tech Cert will always been seen as a top qualification for level 3, even after it is replaced. It's a much better qualification than the ND/NC (and as someone who has done all 3 I can say that with meaning). I don't think you will be wasting your money at all. Good luck with it!
  23. For £10p/h I'll come and clean your vans Out of interest, what is he doing with his spare time on a Saturday, anything constructive or just having "me time"?
  24. Had to survey an old hedgerow today which contained some very nice old pollards, each had a dbh over 1m and no evdence of fungal infection. A housing estate looks over the fields and you can see where the local scumbags have been burning in some of the hollow ones, I suspect they may well die from vandalisium before anything else.
  25. I don't get paid for lunch breaks either and offically should have 30 mins (unpaid) for lunch each day. Not that we always get a break, in the summer we are full on with little old ladies complaining about light/leaves/conkers/squierrles/etc to get a break. If I'm out of the office (3-5 days a week) it will be a snack in the car between visits. The one benefit our office has is flexi time, so long as the job is done and to a good standard then the management are cool if one day we do 5 hours while another may be a 10 hour affair. I can also be in the office anytime between 0700-0930 too which is handy if I need to do the school run or have a hangover!
