  1. I was tracking a 8 inch timber wolf up a very steep bank to get it of the rail line was using a winch to help it up was all going well until the wire rope snapped and came back towards me and nearly took one of the lads head off was very close! I banged my leg up due to the chipper sliding on me. Oh the reason for it snapping was due to the guy who took it up the bank slung it round a tree then hooked it back onto the wire.

  2. I pay £25 a week for a 150m by 20m ( hard standing) with a container on it also I have a small office on there with power. I can dispose any rubbish in there skips the yard is in a gated with a 9ft fence around it.

  3. I think it's a really sweet notion that being honest about a tree and saving it's life will get you a good reputation and more work in the future.

    But it's niaive, and wrong.

If someone phones you up and asks you to take a tree down, do it, they're not asking for advice, they're asking for a service. They really won't lose any sleep over murdering a healthy tree.

If, on the other hand, someone phones you up and is worried a tree they have could be dangerous, be honest, don't rip them off and take it down if it doesn't need it, but there's no harm in offering to tidy it up to give them a bit of piece of mind if they reallly want, but reinforce that it's fine as it is.

Don't turn away work based on conscience and a love of trees as living beings. To many people they are nothing but a nuisance. Taking down a perfectly healthy tree in someone's garden because it kills their grass and drops sticks on their car is not exactly deforestation of the Amazon guys.

    Don't over-think these things!

You took the words out of my mouth ok fine you can sleep well at night but you will soon be sleeping in a box because you can't pay the bills.

If the customer wants it felled fell it as they will only get someone else to do it!

Yes honesty is the best policy but don't let it bankrupt you!

  4. Just a quick note I am with trust and have been for years and don't have any problems with them BUT I was talking to one of there guys and if you make a claim for saws tools etc.. Make sure you have the receipts for them as they will not pay out. So I looked for mine and I can't find half of them I got the Saws about 4/5 years ago so out of the 9 saws and 3 climbing kits I could only claim for 4 saws and half of my climbing kit. Has anyone on here had trouble claiming for kit when they dont have a receipt?

  5. I did it for about 5 years starting as a chipper monkey then moved up the ladder to coss team leader climber really good experience as already said loads of black thorn and ivy covered trees in real tight spots. But on the other side I did work on some nice trees but don't expect to be climbing 500 year old oaks. I learnt loads about rigging/takedowns and site clearance work (thats what I mainly do now) I loved the job and would do it again tomorrow!

Money was good I was on £28k with a brand new hilux as a team leader coss. The night work is ok once you get used to it I think it makes you a safer climber as you double check every movement you make.

Before you do your PTS you need to have a medical and a drugs test. Its very hard work but very rewarding when you look back down the line and you have cleared 2 miles of track, well if you are into that sort of destruction :)

  6. When I have an application returned to me it never mentions having a approved contractor to carry out the work and this is not just from the Norfolk area it been the same across about 11 LA's I have work in! It is only says that the work should be carried out to BS5837 and gives a link to the LA website for more advice also I've work for worked 7 different LAs and never been ask to be AAAC!

On the bit about the LA's being Bent I can see both sides of the story there is always a rotten apple in most organisations and I have seen this first hand. Also there are some really nice and professional people in said organisations.

What I feel saddened by is the fact a few of you have turned this into a personal slagging match. I feel that we should rise above the fact that some people are bent corrupt and start being the professionals that we keep calling ourselves.
