  1. do you know Tom Goodridge up there mate? 1 of the game keepers up there

I read somewhere the other day they are looking for a full timer up there for forestry

Not sure the name rings a bell. as for work they were looking a short while ago. I dont have much to do with the forestry side as all we did was there climbing work for them

  2. as the all the above had said but I would say that network rail will not carry out the work for free as they are cutting back. if the trees are 6ft 6 (green zone) away from the running rail you could ask network rail to surply a COSS and you guys could work on a temp track permit.

  3. I used to do rail for about 3 years with walkers. I loved it i took alot away from it try and get your COSS and lookout/site warden tickets because if you dont like the tree cutting side of it you could go and work for network rail. working nights was good fun it does push you as a climber working up a tree over the lines in the dark! I would say the worst bit is the BLACK THORN!! rips your arms to bits!

Some one asked if fountains/counnaght are still doing rail when I was there (about a year ago) they had closed down the rail side of stuff due to the lack of work. but this may of changed.

  4. I did this once with my mog and got nicked :-(

so I bought a longer draw bar and run it under the chipper (but have to lift chipper as high as you can on linkage) there was a trailer on ebay which I think would be great for what you want like others had siad talk to akins vos and or parkiargi in essex.

Also you will have to look into this but you may need an O licence

  5. HI,

I am with trust 10m as that is what a lot of my customers ask for :-(

LA etc.. also I have all my trucks with them mogs land rovers and tools. I dont have a height restrcion with mine and it covers all sub-contractors any plant hire any trees left on site for planting and any fence work.

    really happy with them

  6. I can collect timber from site, if you have access for an 18 tonner and enough quantity to make it worthwhile.

Give me a bell if your interested, 07875 386674.

Will give you a bell when I have a job to fill your truck

  7. hi ed... can you get an artic in your yard [assumin you'd have enough wood to fill it] and have you got or can get use of a telehandler to load it.. i'd pay for someone to load it and give u few quid for wood..

I dont have any wood in my yard any more as I just got rid of a load. If people want the wood they would have to pick it up from my sites and the access changes. But when I do build up a good pile I will let you know.

  8. Got a yard just out side Diss and 6 miles from downham market also have use of a yard in london when I am down there. but we get about a bit trying to get the work in I drive a red 90

  9. I came across this last year I was asked to fell a small wood about 200ish trees all med to large fell the guy asked us to do it on a day rate so I gave him a price. stated the work and towards the end of the job he said that we took to long. found out the next day that he was doing it for free as he sold log wood. but to cut a long story short he did not want to pay as it cost him more to transport the wood than he thought he only paid us half in the end was not happy!!

Alot of the site clearance work we do they want to know how much the wood is worth and take it off the price of the job

The GB rules will apply if you drive a van or other commercial vehicle with a maximum permitted gross weight of 3.5 tonnes or less. They may also apply to drivers of some passenger-carrying vehicles, including public service vehicles on regular services on routes of 50 kilometres.

The Great Britain (GB) domestic drivers' hours rules affect most drivers and commercial vehicles that are not within the scope of the EU rules. They apply only to journeys made entirely or partly on public roads in Britain. Northern Ireland has its own domestic rules.

For more information on the EU rules, see our guide on how to comply with EU drivers' hours rules.

The GB rules won't apply if you are driving in a private capacity, ie not in connection with a job or in any way to earn a living.

You will come under the GB rules if you drive a public service vehicle (PSV) that:

    * is used on regular services of 50 kilometres or less

    * has eight or fewer passenger seats and is used on regular services within the UK of 50 kilometres or more

    * has eight or fewer passenger seats and is used on non-regular services, such as a tour, private hire or a commercial excursion

For definitions of what counts as a public service vehicle and how a regular service is defined, see our guide on drivers' hours rules: the basics.

Other passenger-carrying vehicles driven under permit operations - or used for non-PSV use - also come under the GB rules. See this table to help you decide which rules apply to passenger carrying vehicles - Opens in a new window.

If you drive a goods vehicle, you will need to follow GB drivers' hours rules if the vehicle or vehicle combination - eg a van with a trailer - has a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tonnes or less, and is operated entirely within Britain.

    Exemptions

The GB rules do not apply to drivers who do not use public roads, eg driving in connection with road improvements or road maintenance, quarrying, construction work and civil engineering works.

If you drive for fewer than four hours every day in any fixed week, you do not have to meet the drivers' hours requirement for that week. A fixed week runs from 00.00 on Sunday to 00.00 the next Sunday.

Not sure if this helps My mogs are argi class so its never bothered me

  11. Hi,

I can see alot of you guys sell log wood well I dont and really dont have the time or the equipment to do it so I have a fair bit of timber that just gets chipped.

I am in west norfolk and if any of you guys want the wood its yours. you would have to pick it up from my site on the days we are there working. some times we have large amounts so you might need a lorry or trailer.

Pm if you want my number or intrested

  12. No not every job is a full day. also alot of the jobs have come off the back of others (if u know what I mean.) eg we were asked to clear one site for a customer and 2 other companys came over and had a look what we had done they asked us to quote on 10 more sites I also think that as we used big bits of kit and the other guys that bid on the job were going to do by hand and would take them 2 weeks and it took us 2 days so half the £££

  13. Hi

Yer that price is plus Vat. and TBH the kind of cutomers that I target are not that fussed about paying Vat. I insure when I quote that I turn up looking smart with a clean truck dont baffle them with to much info simple stupid :001_smile: but dont talk down to them. (Sorry if i am telling you how to suck eggs)

I really do think I have been very lucky this year and how long it lasts I dont know.

  14. 2010 was very good for us. As for 2011 so far its been good picked up a few more big customers and so far its looking good but I dont think I will hit my 6 month target of 135k. but I think the key is with every penny you earn is to use it well and make it last. there are plenty of ways to cut cost with out cutting saftey! As for finding new work on the slow days I spend all days ringing old customers and just have a chat with them and remind them that you still here. also I ask my wife to type up a really good letter/email (as i cant spell for crap) and sent/emailed all the people I think would use my service. I still think that there is loads of work out there but you have just got hold your head up high and go out there and find it becuase unless you spend £20k plus on ads etc.. they will not find you!

  15. Hi guys,

New to the forum so just a quick hello from me Ed (will post in new members forum in a bit)

As for pricing I charge £495 for 2 men (climber and grounds person with cs 38)

Unimog with 9 inch chipper and normal gear. I have only lost one quote this year (out of 36) but if its a commercail it goes up a tad to £545. I always give a writtern quote as I think it sepertes you from looking like a cowboy! when I call the customer 3 days after sending quote and they say that its to much and found some one to do it for £250 I ask them if the other guy is insured etc.. and most of the time they call back and ask me to carry out the work. I also carry a folder in the truck with a copy of out tickets and insurance and show them when I do the quote. I hope this helps a bit
