  1. I tried Aspen for a while, didn't seem to make a huge difference to my health just a large dent in my pocket. I wear a vapour mask now, that's cut out the head aches and nose bleeds I used to get.
  2. Nationwide delivery can be arranged
  3. I had an email from the researcher to say all the team thought my bit was the most interesting piece of the day and wished they could of had longer. I've already had 2 email enquiries for furniture and over 90 website hits in the last hour
  4. Thanks. The mill is an alaskan from Rob D on here and the saw is a stihl ms880 with a 36" bar
  5. Got no idea, the whole interview and filming took 30 minutes and Matt did seem really interested in what I was doing as did the sound guy and the camera man, not sure about the director though! Thanks for everyones nice comments
  6. I only mentioned it because it's me doing the milling
  7. Providing it hasn't been edited out there'll be some chainsaw milling in tonights episode of Countryfile BBC1 7pm.
  8. No doubt some of you have had the conversation or ones like it, where the person you're talking to says they have a chainsaw but as they don't use it in a professional way they can see no point in getting any ppe. Given how dangerous chainsaws are, do you think the time has come to make purchasing a chainsaw the same as that of guns and how difficult would it be to enforce?
  9. I always price in to a job the cost of a visit to the osteopath! As this is the second time you've mentioned a power barrow I'll look into it, just depends if it will go over rough terrain.
  10. No. If I were to quarter saw I'd get 12 quarters, not just 12 quarter sawn boards. As it is I'm not going to quarter saw, I'll take the top cut off, do a verticle cut with the side mill then through & through the stem.
  11. Thanks guys, BigJ that's what I thought about doing but it's good that you suggested it. The tree is at the top end of a field with no access for a tractor or 4x4 so it's a chainsaw mill and handball out. I'll post the pics when done, if I have time to take them. I'm thinking 3 lengths at 10' or am I better doing a 12' & 2 @ 9'?
  12. I've got a 40" diameter Wych elm to do next week about 30' long. Would you quarter saw it or through and through? I'd be interested of your views.
  13. I've done it with just a 3' mill when I forgot the side mill. Take the top off as normal, then cut a 12.5" slab, turn the slab on its edge and take the top off again. Set the mill to 6" and cut a slab off the slab and then split that down. Make sure the log is facing down the slope. It's a tricky procedure but is doable with care.
  14. I've been milling for the last 9 years or so and have found the 3M 4279 Valved Reusable Half Face Mask to be the best for protecting me against dust and exhaust fumes
  15. I did one like that a few weeks ago, slightly bigger. I got 3 @ 2", 4 @ 1.5" and 1 @ 2.5" all 11' long. It's not always easy to get the trunk out or a bandsaw mill in so whatever you get with an alaskan is better then leaving for firewood.
  16. I milled up a walnut tree the other day and have the outside boards with the white wood in. Does anyone know if this can be used or is it just firewood?
  17. We all go on about how important it is to have our chainsaw certs but think nothing of buying a woodworking machine without any formal training. Spindle moulders are the most dangerous woodworking machine on the market. If the cutter comes out of the machine it will do it without warning, it won't stop as it passes through you nor the side of a wooden building, we had one fly out when I was in college, it didn't stop until it was embedded in a 9" block wall. If you're not professionaly trained to use these machines please consider getting a company who is set up for this type of work to do it.
  18. They're good sizes but I would reduce the 2.5" to 2.25, there's no need to plane off .5" to get a 2"board
  19. Already done it. Milled, moved & sticked out in my storage area in Nottinghamshire.
  20. None at all Rob, quite amazing when you consider the tree has been done since Jan 14
  21. Milled some lovely boards on Monday from a fallen Walnut tree in a garden not far from Hampton Court. Transported them back home to Nottinghamshire yesterday and sticked them out to dry today.
  22. Milled on Monday, now in Nottinghamshire
  23. Biggest problem in this sort of business is allowing your heart to rule your head. None of us like to see perfectly good timber go up in smoke but we can't save every tree on the planet.
  24. I've just had similar problem, tightened up the chain and within 2 cuts the chain was slack again. Checked the bar and found a worn nose sprocket. I've changed bars over and I've had no problems since.
  25. That's the one, next to the cricket ground. Oxton farm estate has logged and taken it for firewood to use in the biomass burner at the golf course! I'd got some of it lined up for milling and the rest for charcoal.
