  1. Good stuff lads! Some good advice as usual on here. Think I will try and vary who does what to keep boredom from setting in! My plan is to go and mark the site with canes Saturday then we can get cracking straight away on Monday. Will keep you posted on the progress and try and get some pics up! Cheers again.
  2. Will have a look our for one of these too -cheers!
  3. Yes they are with canes and tubes. Was talking 200 per day per man also-that too optimistic?
  4. Evening all. Starting a planting job next week -6000 mixed broadleaves 20-60cm cell grown. I have banked on it taking 3 of us 10 days (200 plants per man per day).Is this a realistic rate? Anybody got any top tips to make the job go smoothly? All advice gratefully received!
  5. aye tis! Will give it a trail go i think and see what happens. Like you say will be most effective if used as part of an overall good turf management regime. Cheers for the reply timber!
  6. Just wondered if you are still of the same opinion of this product? I have heard mixed reports, but would consider purchasing if you still recommended it! Cheers
  7. Spoke to me mate in Northland last night and he says its dead up there. No work and loads going over to Oz. stick to places with the larger conurbations and you'll have better/more opportunities. The power companies were always after folk when i was there. Forgot the names though!
  8. get a 12 month working holiday visa. gives you the freedom to explore the country. Find an area you like, then look for a job. Usually loads about and us poms are highly regarded as knowledgeable grafters! Spent 8 months in the bay of Islands a couple of years ago, landscaping/maintenance for the local council and doing trees for cash. if you find somewhere you like with a decent job you can go down the sponsorship route. Great place, great people, unbelievable scenery. Loved it.
  9. Whilst we are on this topic, signed this today: Hi, I've just asked my MP to support the Illegally Logged Timber Bill - around 20% of the wood and paper products we buy in the UK are from forests that have been illegally plundered. And this has a devastating effect on the species that rely on the forests to live. Take part in WWF's campaign today by visiting: WWF UK- Campaign with us Hopefully this will go some way into stopping this practice.
  10. Good call there pal -been a while since I've done any stump treatments and we used to do that when working on the council house garden sites. Also used to then cover with black plastic to stop any inquisitive hands exploring! Would be a pain in the arse to do 50 though! Will definitely have to use as prescribed on the label also, might not be as effective but covers me if anything untoward happens -however unlikely that may be! Thanks again
  11. Cheers for all the replies. Will have to check with the L.A what their spraying policy is ie what substances do they allow! Thanks again -the collective knowledge on this place is great!
  12. Plus stump grinding isn't really feasible due to access, but thanks for the suggestion.
  13. Cheers for all the replies guys. quick question are these on a river bank? if so you will need to notify the EA really for consent No its on a railway embankment. Plus the site is very heavily accessed by the public, anything from dog walkers to drunks, as it's a main thoroughfare. The L.A will not close the path either.
  14. Evening all! just been asked to price for felling approx 50 Alder trees then treat the stumps to prevent any regen. Also on site are Alder stumps cut back last year (and allegedly treated!) that have grown about 5 feet in a year. 2 questions : Should I treat the newly felled stumps with glyphosate straight away, or treat with something else, The other stumps with a years growth -cut back to base and do as above or leave to come into leaf then spray? Any comments would be grand cheers!
  15. What would you be reckoning on currently Bob? Cheers
  16. They were talking around the 65p per tree mark for the tree shelter (second) lot. Cheers
  17. Happy new year lads and lasses. I have been asked to provide a price for planting trees on a site. Spec: 2.2 PLANTS AND PLANTING 2.2.1 Trees will be cell-grown plants in 175cc plugs and 20-60cm high. 2.2.2 Plants supplied to the site, or contractor base, which ever is most appropriate. 2.2.3 The trees will be planted in the marked wavy rows. 2.2.4 Trees will be planted at a variable spacing in the row to achieve a density of 2,500 trees per hectare. Spacing will vary from 1-3m apart with tighter spacing in the centre and wider on the edge next to open ground. 2.2.5 Three lower density areas of 1,100 stems/ha are identified in the planting area, see planting map 2.2.6 Turf to be screefed from planting station with trees then notch planted. 2.2.7 Planting to ensure the root collar is at groundlevel and the plant is firmly healed in. 2.2.8 Plants to be vertical. 2.2.9 All planting is to be guarded by the end of each day. 2.4 TREE PROTECTION 2.4.1 Guards and canes will be supplied to the site, or contractor base, which ever is most appropriate. 2.4.2 The guards will consist of 0.6m spirals (38mm) supported by bamboo cane 0.9m (12-14lb/100). 2.4.3 The cane will be pushed 1/3 of the way into the ground next to the planted tree. 2.4.4 The spiral is then placed over, or wrapped around, the tree and the cane. 2.4.5 The spiral will be pushed firmly down to ensure good contact with the ground. 2.4.6 Both the cane and spiral to be vertical. 2.4.7 Care to be taken to ensure plants are not damaged as spiral are fitted over them. Plus a price for weeding and mowing; 3.1 WEEDING (SPOT) 3.1.1 Roundup biactive to be applied around the base of each planting station to give a weed control spot of 1m diameter. 3.1.2 Inform site manager at least 24 hours in advance of spraying operations to check site access is available, and not being used by students, and to warn them spraying is being undertaken. 3.1.3 Ensure herbicide spray does not come into contact with the planted tree / shrub. 3.1.4 Roundup biactive to be applied at 4litres/ha. 3.1.5 Marker dye to be used to ensure planting stations are not missed and to help gauge spot diameter. 3.1.6 Spraying operations to be undertaken when directed by GRL. Normally a first weeding during the spring (March-May) and second later in the year (June–July or Sept-Oct). 3.1.7 Filling of knapsacks on site only at agreed locations. 3.1.8 Herbicide spraying not to be undertaken during wet or windy weather, or when wet weather expected within 2-4 hours. 3.1.9 Ineffective herbicide application due to wet weather will have to be repeated at the contractors own expense. The price they were working on was about 42pence per tree -does that sound about right. Been years since I did anything on this scale so any input would be of great help! 5800 trees mixed broadleved in total. Plus another site with 5200 to the same planting spec but with the below protection: 2.4.2 The guards will consist of 0.75m treeshelters (78-105mm) supported by chestnut stakes 0.9m. 2.4.3 The stake to be driven into the ground to a sufficient depth so the top of the stake is at least 5cm below the top of the tube and above the top tie. 2.4.4 The base of the guard to be slightly pushed into the ground (5mm). 2.4.5 The plant to be in the centre of the guard. 2.4.6 Plant stem / branches not to be trapped within the guard ties. 2.4.7 Guards and stakes to be vertical. 2.4.8 Stakes to be on the SW side of the guard and ties to be tight. Cheers for looking, as I say any advice will be gratefully received.
