Check the transfer box is still working. I.e. going in and out of low ratio and in and out of diff lock. If difficult to put into low ratio then get it checked.

If its fuel injected check for any leakage around the block where they go in. We had a couple of issues with them working looose but it wasn't squirting fuel everyhwere. Another thing to look out for is leaking from the transfer/gearbox area. We have a small leak on our defender but it has seemed to have stopped. Also check the ball joints on the front axle for grooves caused by stones they can eventually become cracks. but it does take a long time for them to become cracks.

It'll stop the squeaking for about 5 mins. If the bearings on the tensioner pulley are going (like on ours) it wont make much difference. The alternator is a job you can do at home, the tensioner pulley isnt as its a steel bolt going into an alloy head so if you cross thread it then its game over. We changed the alternator on the discovery at home as the thing wasnt worth refurbing. There is meant to be a slight gap between the coil and the magnet the gap on ours was full of hard baked clay so not much use to charge the battery and lights.

We got a squeak on our defender and we had one on our discovery. It is either a sticky pulley or the tensioner is on its way out. but as for the glowing light the alternator is gonna go fairly soon. Does your rev needle flicker at high revs?

Just trawled through my many pics and found some rather nice and serious Dryad's Saddle Polyporus squamosus action. First trio of pics are on a Sycamore with a squirrel damaged crown and is in the target area of a heavily used bridge (going to be felled). The next two are taken about 500 metres away on a very tall Ash. The fungi has now come out of the root plate which is severely undermined by rabbits which has caused the collapse of the rootplate (on a very windy day the root plate on the collapsed side lifts by approx 3 inches. All of the trees in the vicinity are undermined and have various defects and are to be felled this winter due to the number of targets [House, Road, footpath and garden]). The last set are of more DS. The first set are of the brackets cracking through the Ash stump (you might be able to see the extent of the white rot in the pics). The second set are of the fungi 4 weeks later.

The bloke we just sold our Disco to thrashed it and ended up with a blown head gasket costing him 800 + quid to get it repaired. lol. He very quickly learnt that 300Tdi are not designed to do 95 down the A303.

I know this is gonna sound a stupid question but its from a colleague. If we fell 3 ton in volume of thorn scrub and chip it into the trailer. Does that mean we have 3 ton of chippings? As both of our trucks can only tow three tons maximum.

I just remembered i put the pics up of it before. lol. I am a muppet sometimes .

My dad and I's new toy. We had a P reg Discovery which we sold for £800. After going to our "local" land rover dealer we found nothing so got hold of an old friend who we have bought the previous 3 land rovers from. First being a nice little 90 with all the trimmings, the Discovery with wide AT's and now this 110. The first lot of pics is before the last lot are after the work was done. Guess how much we paid for it.

£300 fine or £180 if paid within ten days.
Matthew Arnold replied to Mick Stockbridge's topic in General chat
We got pulled over by some police a litle while back. They wanted to check if we had the correct reg docs and to check to see if the truck was overloaded. Sadly it was but only by 25 kilos. As we removed the weight (logs) the policeman asked if he could have them and he was more than happy to put them in the back of his X5 patrol car. We didn't get a fine that time but months down the line we were pulled over again as drivers had been complaining that we were blinding them with our lights. We went onto the weigh bridge and sure enough we were overweight. Only by 50 kg or so and we got a £150 fine for being overweight. We are now very careful how we load the vehicles especially if we are loading logs or rubble. -
This is our discovery after having an altercation with a Nissan x-trail. It cost us £100 to get it fixed. It cost the X-trail owner £1500 as his car buckled up to the drivers door. I hope this link works. Log in | Facebook

He is a legend. Have you seen him with James May in the pessenger seat? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFF2bkiHNVQ]YouTube - Ken Block airfield rallying - Top Gear - BBC[/ame]

Thats why we put name tags in all of our kit. Even our chainsaw helmets and glove. Nobody wants to share man sweat on a hot day.

We had a little kubota with a flail on the back. It was very handy for doing the bigger area of grass. We also has a "light duty" forestry mulcher on the back as well which is probably what caused its demise. Brilliant little bit of kit though we used it for almost everything from mowing to minor ditch clearance. P.S. It was 8 years old and had done many many hours.

I was discussing with my colleagues the other day about CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) Checks. They only work if you havent been caught and its been put on your criminial record. So someone who you employ could be a heavy drug user and a local petit criminal but because they havent been caught its not on their record. Its rather frightening. A classic case is Ian Huntley. He was a peadophile but because he had not been caught it wasn't on file. They only realised when the two school girls went missing.

Oh and what do you think is causing the Ash roots to go very wide and flat? No signs of fungi but a tiny bit of die-back in the crown in July.

I've taken lots of pics of trees and fungi. Some of the fungi i recognise and can identify its the small ones that i cant. Any ideas? And do you recon the trees are veterans or just very mature ones?

It is so bloody frustrating. Ithink the bit that really gets on my nerves is when we block of a section of old railway line with our work trucks by parking them at an angle with a bit of the old axle articulation going. They just proced to somehow walk thru the brambles and nettle and continue on their journey. I tried to stop a member of the public on their mountain bike as we were just about to fell a large tree and i was knocked down by him. He fell off the bike also but blamed me for his injuries. My boss very quickly said to him "Your the **** racing down the trailway when you know full well that we are doing tree work. Now you have left my colleague (me) with a split on his forehead and slightly concussed. Thank you very much". We had only been on site an hour and a half but my cut was pouring blood and combined with the concussion around chainsaws and a raging fire we called it a day and went to the nearest A & E. An hour later in the A & E i came out with 6 stiches and a kiddy certifcate for being brave as i didn't want anesthetic. I am 21 by the way. lol

I know this may sound even worse but if the boss is climbing the trees to delimb or rope up. We use the winch on the front of the truck. WE STILL PUT THE ANCHOR/SAFETY LINE UP FIRST just in case something does go wrong. And that line can be used if needed to takestuff up to him or lower him if we have a problem with the winch. But goin back to anchoring off a MEWP defo not. It is asking too much. It is designed to carry people and equipment not as an anchoring point as your body weight may double (due to G-Forces) and then become a pendulum.

I am liking Five Finger Death Punch. The way of the Fist, The Bleeding, Bad Company, Hard to See, and Never Enough are my faves at the mo. Im rather partial to a bit of Serj Tankian as well. Last winter we towed 4 vehicles behind our L200. Granted we should have done it one at a time but it was on a very gentle uphill slope and the cars couldnt get up it. Only one person said thank you and that was one of the big land owners for the current section of trailway in north dorset. The rest of them just unhitched when we got to the main road and continued on their journey. Its so frustrating. I think the worst case of ignorance i have had to deal with is a member of the public who had a largish 3 stem sycamore leaning over their house. We removed it 3 weeks later and the member of the public didn't like the massive hole we had left and wanted it replanted with Pyracantha to stop people walking down the 1 in 3 slope that was covered in flattened brambles. The member of the public will be extremely upset this winter as we are having that section clear felled as the majority of the trees are nackered (tight forks, splits, severe squirrel damage, etc). Hopefully they wont complain about he leaves this year. lol
