  1. The Sycamore was only a tidler but was massively one sided with it leaning towards the sunlight. The crown was doing the same. It lost its original crown to squirrel damage, rot and wind throw and it sent all of its nutrients to its lower branches. It was on the verge of falling but it was marked up for removal anyway.
  2. I see it now. As the tree was healing from the edges the squirrel came back for another nibbling sesh and opened that area up to the fungi that was in the primary area dn because the wood is softer in the occlusions the rot acted quicker. Thus causing the tree to set up a secondary bark occlusion and make the wound healing uneven. Is that the right answer Hama? And have you ever come across Squirell damage with the associated rot pictures like this before?
  3. The fungi is winning and is slowly chewing its way through the compartmentalised wood.
  4. Christ. My questions were: 1. How do you stack the material? and Where do you stack it? 2. How would you transport this chipper? And how would you transport a tracked chipper? 3. What is the difference between gravity fed, hydraulic feed and draw feed chippers? 4. Check all H+S devices and make sure they work. 5. If you hear a tapping/rattling sound coming from the engine/flywheel housing. What action would you take? Easy answers but it was a LANTRA Refresher.
  5. Hama. You are like Dumbledore from Harry Potter. You know so much and you are very wise.
  6. Kingston Maurward. As its my local one. Th next choice would be Sparsholt.
  7. Grow like mad with tons of epicormic growth.
  8. I did a LANTRA Chipper qual when i was at Kingston Maurward 4 years ago. We do refreshers every now and then to keep our tickets up to date. On day one we talked about maintenance and we were shown how it works. And did a bit of branch chipping. One day two we did half a day talking about No stress feeders and each put a 7.5 inch thick branch through to see what the instructor meant. We had our test at the end of day two which was rather easy as it was just basically talking about the chipper. How its works, Safety features, etc. And then put 10 branches through of varying lengths that were directly in front of the feed chute. I passed with flying colours as did my colleague.
  9. If ya did a 50% reduction n it dies. Its a cracking monolith to leave in the monoculture of an arable field.
  10. I did a two day LANTRA Chipper refresher a few months back. The chipper hadn't been used since the winter. I did the refresher in July . We did all the checks to makesure nothing was nesting in it. And as far as we were aware nothing as until we turned the engine over. We had a massive wasp nest in the exhaust. Everyone got stung as the wasps came out almost all in one hit.
  11. We had a leak coming from the front bulkhead down into the footwells. We used a garden hose to find the leaks and sealed the holes up with bathroom sealant. We have even gone along the length of the bulkhead to make it watertight.
  12. I'm leaning more towards Armillaria spp myself. It has the white spores of honey fungus. But there is no veil. Perhaps Ringless Honey Fungus?
  13. I got some nice pics of Squirrel damage on Sycamore and the amount of decay in the stems. It is reasonably clear that the tree is trying to compartmentalise the rot but the rot is winning. The fourth pic isn't the best as it still shows the hinge but you get an idea of the depth. The limbs were about 5-6 inches thick and main stem is about 12 inches thick.
  14. It is a 4x4 that is actually used for its purpose. We have all done off road driver training. Since i have been working there (coming upto 4 years 6 months) i have only got the L200 stuck once but then got it back out again. Much to the amusement of alot of people as it was on a new section of old railway line we had just cleared kown as Gains Cross. You needed a 25 metre run up to get thru a bit of a bog at the bottom.
  15. I do. It doesnt look jacked up but it only has a 2 inch lift kit. It has its old BFG AT tyres on there. As the pics were taken last winter. The bfg tyres had been on there since we had it which is about 3 years. But like said it dont look jacked up but it is. Its a bit roly poly in the bends and like all rear wheel drive pick ups it can be a tad skittish on the back end. Even if we are being careful not to get the rear going. And to reduce our carbon footprint further we only clean it at the beginning of spring and mid-way thru autumn.
  16. Lol. What made me spray my tea across the desk is when the boss said "Why has the Mitsubishi been tuned up? It doesnt help cutting the carbon footprint." My response was" Well you wanted it chipped. As you said the engine was underpowered in comparison to the 3 litre Ranger. But now the Mitsubishi is far superior off road, thanks both to the jack up suspension and the slight engine tweak."
  17. Exactly. Thats why we have gone for these beauties. The boss isnt too keen on them but i have come up with a good excuse for it. "If we have eco-hippy tyres we won't be able to do any monument management work as we wouldnt be able to get on site. We need something with some serious bite to it." Ratings, reviews and specifications for Cooper Discoverer Radial STT TEK3 tires P.S. For the tax payers it isnt that much.
  18. Ive got the same fungi growing on an Oak tree within falling distance of a few targets. It hasnt shed any limbs........ yet. I cant remember the name of it but i know it causes white rot in the heartwood. But if there aren't any targets it can be left to do what it wishes.
  19. Where i am part of a county council everyone has to attempt to cut down on carbon dioxide producing activities. Driving, leaving lights on,etc. Its so frustrating when we are doing tree work and a member of the public screams at you. They would scream at ya if the tree nearly hit someone as well. Its normally a lose:lose situation with us. We keep tabs on how much fuel we put in our trucks and how many miles we did before it needed filling up again. Once a month we put a tank of optimal fuel through the system to clear the pipes and to generally make the vehicles run better. The highways dept are trying to get us to have these so called "super fuel efficent tyres" put on all countryside vehicles. The trouble is we need tyres with a bit of bite to get us to where we are working.
  20. Black one on the Ash looks very much like I. hispidus. Not sure on the Oak. How recent did it shed a limb? And what colour was the heartwood of the fracture?
  21. Stihl 660. New shipping container. Pay rise.
  22. At the weekends i would watch the Ashes and have a crate of beer on the go as well.Just hope n pray that if the sister is in it wont go onto her bloody prgrammes....Come Dine with Me, Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Hannah Montana, Thats So Raven and Sonny with a Chance. She is 19 years old by the way. Apparently the programmes i watch are boring as they contain too much info. You can tell the one with the higher grades and a much better job prospect.
  23. I will be switching off the TV and listening to the Radio as of 25th November and will be doin so for the entire duration of the Ashes. Most of my colleagues are really into cricket but the apprentice and the trainee aren't too keen on listenin to it all winter. We will soon bring them round.
