  1. I thought this was a shear-ious thread, no puns please.
  2. There was a thread on fasciation, but this isn't that. Apparently, after some googling, I see you can get a Tilia platyphyllos 'tortuosa'. Although this was a sizable mature lime just inside a wooded area, so I'd be surprised if it was planted...
  3. Very highly unlikely at this location. I did notice a few scattered scale insects, some on the affected twigs, some not; I'm not convinced they have anything to do with it though...
  4. Anyone come across this on lime twigs before? Mostly on the epicormic and lower branches (as far as I could see), a lot of the previous year's twists had partly died, or died beyond the twist.

    Good books...

Nice. Is it as it came off the tree, or have you shaped it a little toward the bottom?

    Jokes???

I bought some new shoes from a drug dealer this morning. I don't know what he laced them with, but I've been tripping all day...
  7. Not good. It always looked a wonderful place, one of many many all over the world. Oh well...

    Good books...

Looking good, the last one is sweet. What species?
  9. Some serious fruiting there. Whatever happened following the felling/timber extraction there, how's the ecology responded?

    Good books...

Well, get some pics up! How's Bulgaria treating you? Well I hope.
  11. Pictures would certainly be good. I still don't understand why you need to be more accurate though. It was recently surveyed, nothing noted, it then falls and the insurance company get involved - correct? If my assumptions are correct I'd expect the insurance company covering the damage to take it up with the surveyor, if they wanted to.
  12. Definitely branch walk out and drop it in smaller bits, you don't want a branch that size ripping down the trunk or trapping your saw. Presumably you'll have a second climber with you, as best practice and especially as you're outside of your comfort zone. Maybe they can guide you? Good luck...
  13. Even with no fruiting body, it still be Merip. Or Armillaria, or anything else! Is the need to know just curiosity?
  14. No worries. I've got no idea how qgis works, but good luck with it!
  15. Good answer, also welcome to the forum Arbanner! Just to toss another thought out here - I've never seen Kretz on any stem less than about 30 or 40cm diameter. I suspect it needs the bigger diameter/older wood to colonize, which a smaller newly planted tree wouldn't have. So lime is liked, let loose the planting spade...
  16. Mr Island, if you want to email the file to me I can see if I can convert it for you. I'm guessing you want it as a dxf?

    Good books...

Cheers, might have to hunt a cheap copy down. The new Klaus, Mynors and a couple of random old ID books in the last month has just about done my book budget for the time being!

    Good books...

The title appeals is it an old book? Not come across it before...
  19. Good heads up I tried qgis and another cheapo one before I settled on Pear Tech's. It's expensive, but for a technophobe like me the training and telephone support is invaluable!

    Good books...

New Sylva looks a good'un. So many good books, so little book shelf space! Nope, sorry...
  21. Ah, big story about not a lot then. I suppose if they didn't do it people would complain they didn't sort it out!
  22. I'm still reading it through, and I've just read through the summer branch drop pages. I thought the jury was still out on causes (or if it even exists!) and yet Klaus puts his theory across in a way that just makes sense. No references though. The whole book is excellently written, short, sharp and to the point...
  23. Unfortunately, this doesn't surprise me one bit...
  24. Not good, I'll keep an eye out. I've heard of another chainsaw theft a few weeks ago, also in colchester, and second time the guy got done within a year...
