Excellent case study of how stupid people can be when they venture out anywhere near trees in predicted weather like that storm. Now that would be a debate. .

another large failure from this last weekend. Woodland beech with a couple of Ganoderma species associated. . -
Managing Trees with Decay & Dysfunction
David Humphries replied to David Humphries's topic in Tree health care
Although the tree had a notable lean over the path below it, I hadn't considered the tree for any reduction works partly due to the lack of any fruiting over the recent years that we've been inspecting it. Unlike its neighbouring trees, who came through the same high winds and saturated ground conditions over the weekend, which both have known decay issues and are pencilled in for reduction works. (even more so now that one of the large adjacent trees has been removed from imediate group canopy dynamic) . -
Managing Trees with Decay & Dysfunction
David Humphries replied to David Humphries's topic in Tree health care
Significant buttress failure of a large red oak The decay appears to show that it's a brown rot with mycelial sheets associated. I believe this is indicative of Laetiporus sulphureus, although curiously I've haven't noted the fruiting on this particular tree over the last 15 or so years . -
I don't think you'd get the same psychoactive response as when you lick certain species toads, but let us know how this goes also .

Let us know how you get on .

It may be a crustose form of Lichen, but not overly confident of that. Your close up looks like it shows small specks which may be the spore structures, I've read that in some species you don't always get the cup like spore bearing structure (apothecia) like you see in a lot of other species. A search offers up a number of similar looking white crustating lichens like Pertusaria amara. Perhaps get in touch with Robin Crump who's the Pembrokeshire contact of the British lichen society [email protected] The British Lichen Society | Promoting the Study, Enjoyment and Conservation of Lichens .

How many people were involved Jules? .

I don't know yet. I should be able to offer up three or four days with my own leave & a day or two of corporate volunteering hopefully. Would be more efficient to do areas I already know I guess, but also a good opportunity to get know other parts of the capital and their specific treescapes. .

The project is looking for around 200 volunteers to create 66 three person teams. There is a need for each of the teams to have a designated team leader who would get training in May The volunteers would ideally be made up of Tree wardens, Arborists, Tree Officers, Students etc.... The surveying will take place over four days this summer & its hoped that each of the teams could do 3 plots a day. So, if anyone is interested please get in touch with Jim Smith who is the National Urban Forestry Adviser, at...... [email protected] You would need to supply the following information.... A name, contact phone number, e-mail address and the postcodes you would like to operate in or be a "Londonwide" volunteer Thanks for reading .

This survey will take on board both privately owned trees and those within the management of the local authorites. Obviously it would be too big a task to plot every single tree, so there are 650 recording plots across the whole of the inner & outer parts of the capital. The plots measure 11m in radius The info to be recorded will consist of: land use (for example, cemetary, residential, street etc....) Number of trees Canopy percentage Canopy die back Ground cover (for example, cement, grass, water etc....) Percentage of sunshine on the trees The above are just a few of the categories

This summer will see an ambitious project to attempt to record the canopy across London The Goverments Forestry & Woodlands Policy states the need to inventorize the citys trees to show them as a connected resource. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/221023/pb13871-forestry-policy-statement.pdf from section 6: Improving Our Valuable Woodland Assets........... It is vital that we have accurate, up-to-date information about the size, distribution, composition and condition of our woodlands. The current National Forest Inventory, which will be completed in 2014, will provide a record of key information about our forests and woodlands. This information will be useful for everyone involved in forestry and land management, planning, policy and business. Such high quality and reliable information is particularly important for business investment.

Interesting shots what tree species is the ivy is growing on? Is it dysfunctional? My guess is that the tree has a seem of dysfunction, which is where the saprophytic Lycoperdon mycelium is hosting within the dysfunctional volume of the tree stem, and that the mycelium has grown in to a tear/fracture of the the back of the ivy stem & looks like it's coming out of what appears to be sound functional Ivy. .

Hi Adam, we use Arbotrack at Hampstead Arbortrack - Tree Management Software Currently using a SamsungQ1 but possibly going over to a Motion J3600 but awaitng an opportunity to seee that in the field. Also looking at other devices at the cheaper end of the spectrum such as windows/iPad type tablets. I'm sure we could accomodate you on a day when we are out surveying. If location suits, (NW London) send me an e-mail to discuss further regards David

A touch of the old Annex C's today. Crown management – specialized practices (Page 57 of BS 3998:2010 (Note 2) This lapsed beech pollard was being retrenched, the upper most branch didn't really have any epicormic growth toward the base of the branch, so the end weight was reduced (leaving a small volume of buds at the end) and the lower section wounded by axe to break through the bark and (hopefully) initiate/stimulate adventitious shoots from any developing callous in the next year or two. (fairly steep hillside, so terrain/access not suited for tracked mewp) .

Bracing a tree for its Habitat value
David Humphries replied to David Humphries's topic in Video forum
Its not in a good vascular state and has almost no lower canopy to reduce to, so will unlikely be a candidate for a viable reduction. But a fine habitat tree as its completely hollow above the boling. One of the rod plates is almost completely engulfed by calous. . -

This one we're not working on but thought I'd post up in this thread, as it was rod & cable braced about 16 years ago. .
