  1. Thank you Mr Bullman and Mr Humphries! Top site to learn from.....
  2. I resigned from the army this week (after 30 years service) as a result of an interview with a well known Arb Firm who offered me a job as a consultant. 5 years of study has finally paid off! I shall have a few beers to celebrate!! Thank you to everyone who has offered advice and support - especially the owner of the fungi directory without which I would probably have struggled on a my exams
  3. Could be the rollers need lube and a clean. If the hydraulics are buzzing it maybe air in the system and they need bleeding. Check your levels too.
  4. If you ever unsure about stuff like this speak to Businesslink Business support, information and advice | Business Link they provide a free service for the self-employed. Good luck
  5. Brilliant pictures!! I used the fungus diary to help get me through my Tech Cert, hats off to your collection trooper. You should consider compiling your work and then sell it as an Arb Guide to fungi. Keep up the stirling work
  6. Cool as beans - I love it.....oh and so do my kids
  7. I had bikes for quite a few years - had to give them up when I became a resposible father. I still pine for one and I will get another one day. I used to project manage an annual multi-national military motorcross event for charity until the MOD sold off all its bikes and we had to stop. Fabulous times on bikes (broken a few body parts too). You can see what I got up to if you Google 'Exercise Enduring Help' for a good cause!
  8. Well done you. Good luck job-hunting!
  9. Shocking! Bring back National Service or send them to me for a week - I'll ensure they return to you with the deserved respect and suitable discipline!!
  10. Just up my street but a little too far away from home!! Good opportuntiy I agree....
  11. I like this - I can see a use for this website already...thanks
  12. Woohoo I passed! How did you all get on? I can now start applying for jobs - anyone got a vacancy they need filling in the South?
  13. Itchen Valley and Swanwick Reserve - both Hampshire
  14. Steve, sent you a Q on another thread. I work at a number of country parks and nature reserves in my spare time when the army doesn't need my services. I do a bit of woodland management and will be cutting a few ash, birch, willow and oak this winter. Happy to discuss the art of the possible, cost etc. If you are interested PM me and we'll chat more. Cheers
  15. Hi there, I work at a nature reserve in your county - are you ever in need of wood? If so we are doing some felling this winter. Happy to discuss costs etc off-line.
  16. I'm in favour of not airing my dirty washing in public. I think a pragmatic approach to this to gain a solution is required. A little hint that the abuse of such power could see him in court and fined with the added embarrassment of himself in front of his chums may go down well. Make out you are doing it for his benefit! A review of case law to do with trees and maybe the latest press cutting of a bloke being fined thrust in his hand would make him stand up a bit. Diplomatically mention that you would not be culpable for any wrong doing as it is his responsibility to verify the legality of the work (although you are duty bound to ask and check - but if he says it is ok.....) and you are being a law abiding citizen to save his sorry butt! This little well known book is worth a butchers... 'Law of Trees, Forests and Hedgerows by Charles Mynors' Don't be steam-rollered trooper, stand your ground.........
  17. Do you know the species of conifer? It looks like Carulaspis sp. If it is then it can be controlled with inceticide in June or July. Look for yellow or pale spots on the leaf.
  18. The arb Conference notes are firmly posted on the AA website for all to see
  19. Hi, I hope the exam worked out for you? Sorry I could not be more specific but if you did exactly what they asked for you'd have done ok
  20. I have just finished (monday) my Arb Tech Cert L3. I cannot speak highly enough of TreeLife and their team. Get in touch with them on Home top notch team. I can recommend going to westonbirt as the hands on and tutor help is top notch. Good luck trooper
  21. Ident easy peasy; VTA you will breeze it; woodland a walk in the park, however 5837 - read the question ok. I can not say any more I am sorry in case this is monitored, but ONLY do what they ask. Good luck!
  22. Did my exam monday - my tip is... take your time and read the question....I say again... read the question and ONLY do what the question wants you todo and do not be smart and show you know stuff they do not need!! If you went to the 3 day prep at Sparsholt you will find this is only half the stress (if you put the work in obviously)
  23. When I did my chainsaw course I drank gallons of water - so my advice is take gallons of water!
  24. I would like to use this mode of communication to thank everyone I met at the AA conference this week. For someone institutionalised in the army to be greeted and welcomed into a very close family group of arborists was refreshing. You all made me feel part of the network of 'tree people' for which I am very grateful. Unqualified until my results come through from my management day which I take in just over 2 weeks time, I was made to feel quite honoured for some to offer me future employment should it arise, work experience should I need it and a business card should I ever need help. I would like to point out that my body is still recovering from the copious amounts of wine forced upon me however a top-up tommorrow night will soon sort that out!! Thank you all once again
