Stihl red shots. Ive heard that leaving mix sit in a can for a period can have a negative effect on the machine? Is this true, and if so, whats the life expectancy of a 2 stroke mix roughly?

I bought a second hand pto chipper recently from a garden machinery dealer, who was selling on a trade in. 'A negri R220' chipper/shredder'. It came with brand new blades and new bolts. I watched a demonstration before i handed over the cash. All seemed well. it was chewing away on thick Laurel branches. I took the machine home and before i used it myself, i discovered that both of the new blades where badly damaged. each of the two blades was sheared in half through their short axis and looked like this: Interestingly the damage occurred to both blades on the same side of the drum? this could just be coincidence. Additional points: 1) the last owner of the machine didn't have the correct flanged bolts fitted and had welded on standard hex bolts instead. 2) the branches used for the demonstration didn't appear to have foreign bodies embedded in them 3) A shear bolt protection shaft was not fitted during the demonstration, (the negri pto chipper - runs on a direct drive from the pto to the drum through a speedup gearbox with out the use of v-belts) Not knowing alot about chippers in general - just wondering if anything like this has happened to anyone before? Is it possible the that the heat generated during the spot wields and the angle grind removal damaged the strength of the steel? Was it lack of a shear bolt protection? Is there something else wrong with the internals of the machine like bearings or something? How could a couple of branches have ruined brand new blades? Something not meeting the eye here. The dealer has purchased me new blades, but as the machine is located 150miles away now, I'll have to install and test myself. I'm just concerned the same thing will happen again. Not a nice thought, but has this ever happened to anyone? Never happened or been near it happening yet, touch wood! I remember hearing scare stories when i was a kid, about people who had had their faces split open but never actually met anyone who has had this happen to em.

Yeah they sure are, i think theres a dude on here who might work for them but havent confirmed that yet. (scottythepinetree). Near Collooney, Co.Sligo. Based in Co.Meath these days though, but venture home home most weekends during the summer. What about yourself mate? Do you work with tree's?

Couldnt believe my eyes when i got home last weekend and saw this bad bouy parked up down at the big house on the estate where my old man lives and works. Getting ready for a bit of utility work around the power lines on the grounds. Just wondering from an outsiders point of view, when your taking down a big lump of a tree like that, what ratio do you use for the felling notch, is more 50:50 compared to a smaller tree? Also - how do you gage not getting your saw jammed when cutting such a deep notch? Skillmagill me thinks, and not something i'll ever be trying lol.

Do you rate those Avant machines Josh, compared to something else in its class, like a skid steer. I believe there are any amount of attachments for avants as well.

Famous for its point breaks apparently - Anchors point etc. Havnet been yet myself.

Ok that makes sense then, cos with the freedom of a spare arm/hand, coarse your gonna do something arkward eventually and get bitten. hadnt thopught of it like that before, i always assumed it would be like an automatic car, i.e. you basically put one hand to sleep when driving. cheers for the advice mate, i use a 170 and 250 presently, more then enough for my firewood supplies etc. The top handled questions were just out of shear interest, would not consider buying ever, unless i was a qualified aborist, and fully trained up. Like you said a pain to use on the ground, especially for a bit of old fire wood, etc.

Nifty and nibble mate, i really like that release gizmo you have on the hydraulic control. Is that running of a little Kubota? L4230 or something similar?

Ok - lets say im an ordinary joe soap with a good background in domestic chainsaw use, and i go out and buy a top handled saw illegally. whats must likely to go wrong for me? WRT the hse trying to ban top handled saws, surely nasty domestic accidents with standard chainsaws also occur. why not pick on standard chainsaws as well, and make them only accessible to someone with training?

Stretching for all its worth there in the last pic - high up? Earlier mate - where abouts where those really clean sets of unridden waves, not British Isles i'd guess.

So increased kickback would be the main reason then overall? Are there any other hazards compared to a standard back handled saw? Again, i probe purely out of interest. From an outsiders point of view - its always seemed strange that one could walk into a shop and buy a huge 42'' saw and take a house down without being asked for anything, yet a tiny lightweight saw is off limited to the inexperienced.

I think this is the older model, which has been replaced by the 225 today. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsProBexev0]Negri R220T[/ame] I dont really know much about these machines but have been keen to purchase a cheap(ish) second hand pto chipper/shredder for some time now, only for private use mind. This wee model has come up for sale locally for about a grand, and looks to be in good condition, bar a couple of minor issues that the trader will sort out before its sale. I like the fact that this model in direct drive with shear bolt rather then the traditional v-belt drive models, which should eliminate wearing parts. It has two new cutting blades and the hammers look to be sound. I havent seen it running yet, but this should happen sometime next week. Anyone had any experience with this Negri model. Any pointers on general pto chippers 'look out fors' before i purchase. Cheers Rowan.

It was a beast all right, but i couldnt help but notice how much time he was wasting arsing round trying to load and pick up the brash for the chipper. some sort of claws would have been much more efficient.
