  1. This looks like one hell of a machine for small timber. Does any one on here use one? Just wondering what they cost new roughly, and the Pros and cons of such a unit? 2. 'lose, lose, lose'? Funny how we've evolved this far then? I reckon we have been burning wood for alot longer then we have been burning coal and gas, let alone nuclear fusion. (and if the wood your burning yourself, is prepared by yourself, it warms you twice!)
  3. Nice bit of work. Great sequence of shots pal. That old beasty tractor has earned its keep. most have been a good few tonne in that trunk. Also that chainsaw the older lad is using to prep the buttresses - scary looking thing that.

  5. Those are some class shots alright. Proper timber jacking, and some serious bits of kits. Love those old countys. Is that wee mini tractor in shot 11 backround part of your kit as well? Looks like a wee ford or iseki with front loader, any close ups of that per chance?
  6. Crykey - lucky to be alive then? Ive been chipping away for the weekend just gone. Just as well it had been stack piled for a few months beforehand. Have to admit i didnt notice any side effects myself. I'll try it with fresh stuff next weekend and see if the experience differs. With regards to Cyanide ive heard of people dying from apple pips they had saved and chewed up in one go, mad stuff. Must try mulching up some castor beans next.
  7. Yeah, have to admit we've burned it before and i'm still alive. Does spit alot alright, makes some interesting noises whilst burning. Thought it was a strange comment for someone to make, thus just making sure lol. Any thoughts on Laurel as a general purpose mulch/weed suppressant? I want to raid the Hosta patch with some of the stuff ive chipped.
  8. Have been clearing a large area of Laurel on the estate. Lots and lots of fire wood being generated, but someone pointed out that there is an association between - burning Laurel and the emittance of Arsenic?? Can anyone shed any light on this claim. I suppose anything is possible but just to make sure.
  9. The newly revamped 35x which suffered a cracked block during the frost earlier in the year, and now has a brand new engine in her. chewing up a few small branches in my woods back home
  10. Sry to veer slightly off topic here, but always wondered - if say a 7.5 ton truck is agri. registered, does this mean i can legally drive it on just a tractor licence? (or is the sole benefit non taxed fuel?)
  11. Thanks for everyones earlier reply - fitted the new blades, not before cleaning the mating surface with a grind stone. Applied the correct torque to the bolts, and didnt over tighten. First test was a tense moment, waiting for a piece of steel to fly out and rip my guts open. But after an inspection was glad to find the blades (and blades edges still intact) in one piece. Chewing up the branches now, like no tomorrow now. some noise of the beast though.
  12. I bought this little Volvo, a few months back for playing with at the weekends. (sad really i know, while everyone else is off drinking, scoring women, etc etc, i'm back at the ranch messing in fields with wee diggers in my spare time ) 28yrs of dreaming about owning one, and finally the wait is over. Cleaning up a mates yards in this one:thumbup1:
  13. Back in the 80's when i was a small grommet! Still have that old 35 - probably hasnt given any trouble since either. Recently 20 years on And are Ursus 475 for small jobs around the estate
  14. Sry Andy, i re-read your second last post, and see what your getting at now. If that is the case then thats probably the most likely situation then, combined with a too large a payload (possibly), lack of shear bolt, and possible over tightening of blades bolts, and uneven and/or dented blade mount. The dealer should have known this, but probably saw me, a young, over enthusiastic fellow flashing cash. cut throat world, and all for the price of a blade. Pity - but lessons learned hard. Tis the only way!
  15. 'my sister, don't let me wear a bikini'
  16. actually, well spotted mate, looking outside the box Ive seen this china made jobbies in action at an agri show. The hand operated hydr. rollers looks annoying. Probably not the most efficient piece of kit
  17. Nah mate, it was a second hand trade in that a dealer had accepted in part payment for a new something or other. In fairness to the guy, if told me he wouldnt sell it on until a few issues were righted. he had fitted the right bolts before i handed over the money, but unawareness to both of us the blades break during his demonstration - and i left the yard with an unusable machine down 150miles of road to home. After nagging the dude for a month, i have received new blades at last. I just dont want a repeat of the demonstration - fingers crossed.
  18. Aye cheers pal - probably was tightened straight after wielding. I'd say this is probably a strong possibility as well. Yeah i must thoroughly inspect the drum, castings etc before i fit these new blades, and maybe just do a hand test rotating the drum, before i attach it to a tractor. cheers Mesterh
  19. this is an interesting note actually - didnt realise the potential for over tightening must ring the negri dealer for proper torque readings. Also as others have mentioned - the bed on which the blades sit - perhaps its bent or something? must have a closer look. Note to all - thanks for your quick efficient and informative answers. Great to have it answered on here
  20. I never got to see the broken ends which were in the pile of chip at the dealers yard. the remaining blades were chewed a little, but this was probably from the broken bits flying round inside momentarily. Appar. this machine is rated for 3inch (max), so yeah if the dude had tested with too big a stick, and without the shear bolt protection this is a strong possibility. Heres a look at the machine in question, not a bad wee machine for a hobbist like myself, and at 1100 quid i kindnt turn this childhood dream of mine down. 21. Nah - the bolt heads had been spot wielded to the blades, and before the correct bolts could be fitted the spot wields were cut. Could this have been enough heat gneration to cause brittleness?
  22. LOL at the measuring tape! In fairness not really a fail, it did kind of work? Funnily enough it was actually the thin end of the stick being chipped that seemed to really stress the situation, the amount of toasted chip flying clear from that, and all the smoke LOL [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6qwptBXY5M]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6qwptBXY5M[/ame]
