  1. So basically, don't downrate as your not gaining much if you have the licence anyway. If you are going to get a vehicle above 3.5ton don't bother with a 4.6ton as your not gaining much in regards to payload for the cost of the o licence? Jim
  2. So if I didn't want a tacho or a o license I could get a plate change from a 4.6ton to a 3.5ton and just make sure I wasn't overloaded? Jim
  3. Cheers for that Pete didn't realise it would cost as much as that. I'm just wondering if there would be much difference with the payload on 3.5ton truck to a 4.6ton that has been down rated. I understand what you're saying but I have plenty of tip sites near me so it's not a massive problem but the truck I'm eyeing up is a bit of a one off and rarely comes up as a 3.5ton if at all. Cheers Jim
  4. That's interesting. Is it because of the original weight of the vehicle or because 3.5t generally don't hold that much by the time all your gear and body is on? So I could drive it without using the tacho but how much will a o licience be? Cheers for your quick reply Pete.
  5. Hi all I'm just a bit confused on this down rating business. I'm interested in buying a 4.6ton tipper but am unsure of how complicated it is to down rate and if I even need to bother? I have my C and C+E licence but didn't really want to have to get a operator licence and a tacho. Also I have a few people that work for me that don't have the licence and it would be useful if they could drive it. Do I actually need a tacho and O license if I only operate within 20 miles of my base? Sorry if this is a over done topic but I find it all a bit confusing and know there are some knowledgeable people on here. Cheer Jim
  6. Cheers Lee but need to get some coin together first, just trying to narrow down the best vehicle to go for. Jim
  7. Cheers for your reply's. I was looking at the vw caddy but nice to hear the kangoo seat goes down to get the grinder in. Was considering a pickup as it doesn't matter if it's quite a small one and have a bit of overhang. What's swayed me a bit was getting a saw and blower nicked a couple of months ago so I've gone a bit mad with security. Cheers again Jim
  8. After a van for quoting and as run about but would be nice to get the grinder in to save pulling a trailer. Anyone else do this? There's plenty of nice small vans out there but can you get a grinder in? Grinder is a rayco rg20 nearly put RPG then oops! Jim
  9. They want the stump removed as the area is getting landscaped right up to the river bank. I was thinking the same as you Chris and just billing for a new chain and a set of teeth for the grinder. Initially the trees were to just fell but now they've seen the stump they want them out and a quotation for doing it. Jim
  10. Is there some decent hardened teeth I can get hold of in case I hit the rocks? Its a rayco rg20 Cheers Jim
  11. I was thinking of subcontracting the work but I haven't had the grinder that long and any work that comes along goes towards paying the bugger off. It might be easiest in the long run tho just to put the work out to some one else. Cheers Jim
  12. After a bit of help regarding the cost of grinding a ash stump. Stump is 75x75cm but has two large anchor roots to grind and it is on a bank side with a visible 3 to 4 foot of stem to grind where the bank levels again before a river. The stump can be accessed easily from the front to grind out but not from the rear and there's two visible large rock grown into the stump front and back. A digger is going to be used to expose some more of the front but cannot pull it out in case the bank comes with it. Would I just add on a new set of teeth and a saw chain to the price or is there a better way to tackle it? Cheers Jim
  13. Big thumbs up from me for the little saw:thumbup1: It's an ideal little pruning saw and that's it. Had it on a few jobs so far and it been worth it's weight(which isn't the best saying as it weighs nothing it's brilliant). Dead wooded an Ash no bother, lovely clean cuts on a lime with no tears and spot on for reducing conifers with small diameter stems. The top of the hedge when finished didn't even need the hedge cutters as the edge had been so clean cut. Points i'd be aware of are: It clogs up if doing large amounts of conifer tops but not surprising due to the amount of fine crap that gets gathered up. Quick pull out and go again. Always take the fuel and oil caps off separately to fill. Be steady with the files because they're so tiny and if you're a rough bugger like me you'll snap them. If your cutting bigger stuff than you should be always go at it on full revs.
  14. I've got the same one and it's spot on. Bought it two years ago and not had any bother with it although I only split for myself and it's not working all winter. I run it off a power pack and it's good for me and capable of splitting big knotty lumps but would be faster on a tractor. 4 way knife is easily removed for knotty lumps but for clean stems it ideal and fast. I bridged the two handles with a bit of wood to make it one handed. All I would say is that I paid a couple of hundred less a few years ago and it was brand new but it could have been clearance stock. There's also another couple on ebay and one is yellow. jim
  15. I was told that if you have a grandad licence then you can still drive the 7.5ton without the CPC but any additional licences that you have gained are worth nowt if you haven't done it. You can do it all in one sitting or spaced out but has to be done before Sept 14. Advise is to get it done sooner rather than later because courses will become booked up the later you leave it. After 2014 you've got 5 years to do it again which obviously equates to 1 day a year which isn't much really. This is just what I've been told from a mate who is currently doing it so sorry if any of the information isn't quite correct. jim
  16. Got to agree with Gnarlyoak. The only reason I went self employed and started out on my own is because the commute and travelling time equaled a minimum wage job due to fuel costs. There's a lot to be said about a steady job and wage not to mention that when you finish a days work that's it untill the next day. I'd like to see the statistics from colleges on the percentage of students that actually get jobs in the industry I bet they're fairly low!
  17. Another vote from me as I agree with everything said so far. I do find the chute is quite a distance away from the pickup but that's the only small negative I have. I always thought the turntable function would be just a novelty but it's amazing how much i use it. Jim
  18. Just thought I'd post to see if anyone had a decent chipper for sale. Been looking for a while now but reluctant to spend my hard earned cash. Got around £7500 Want 6" or bigger Road tow but could be inclined to go for tracked if the price was right Jenson or Greenmech but I could go for a TW again if the price was right. problem I have is I'm not VAT registered and everytime I like something there's vat to go on top, gutted...!
  19. only have experience with the 200t but am looking to get another so this thread will be helpfull in making my mind up. I currently wondering whether to start using husky saws but am unsure of what the top handled ones are like. Any one use one?
  20. I got mine from Arbtec at Durham. They're a Greenmech dealer and were spot on to deal with. Can't remember cost or postage so can't help you on that one. Jim
  21. Thanks again. Nicely worded about pruning restrictions i'll have to use that one.
  22. Thanks for all the replies. I had A feeling that was the case but always nice to check. The form to fill in was (according to the woman she spoke to) just to let them know what works were being carried out. I have said that I would just ring the TO before carrying out any works but I didn't want to risk getting an order put on it because there are some very twitchy curtains opposite. Cheers Chris the Landy's getting there, i just need to get the vehicle graphics sorted.
  23. Hi, I have 4 large trees the client wants removed. They have spoken to the LA there's no tpo, no conservation area. The client was told to download a form to fill in and send back stating what was being carried out. Can I just fell or do I need to ring the tree officer to let him know what I'm doing. I don't really want them putting a TPO on and neither does the client. cheers
  24. I don't know about the Meindl boots in question but I've always used their chainsaw boots and have similar walking boots and I couldn't rate them more. Just replacing my current pair at the moment and they've had alot of wear and don't fall apart like a couple of pairs of hiax's I've seen and worn. Jim
