  1. Hey guys im currently trying make a beech butchers block as a christmas present but have hit a few snags first is that after planing and smoothing the block it has started to leak moisture at the ends It seems as it dries out cracks are starting to form. Im not really sure how to prevent this from happening? You can see in the 3rd pic the dark patches on the left are where moisture is leaving the wood. Would oiling the wood stop the cracking and drive the moisture out? Im planning on using Tung oil and finishing with beeswax. Although im not sure if the beeswax is a good idea as it is being used to chop food on. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks Owain
  2. got a great email sent to me about pig farming "or lack of" sent to defra. if anyone can dig that up its priceless!
  3. Pure poetry! i love it when letters like these get sent to the council!
  4. This is a real problem at the moment with my old man. He's having his worst ever year and he's worked at xerox for over 20 years. every order he gets keeps getting turned down due to credit clearance. Their cacking themselves because of the current financial situation and the decreased turnover the companies made last year so their reaction is to turn down orders left right and centre meaning their killing off their clients or driving them to the competition. it really doesnt make sense!

  12. We often find customers do get quite picky about softwoods but its all seasoned and burns well so i dont see the problem. But in most cases we have to mix the timber as a load of just softwood would be refused by the customer the odd log thouugh and they dont seem to mind:confused1:
  13. My boss makes a good living from firewood, he has a deal with a local estate to come in and cut manage the woodland of windblow and dead diseased and dangerous we use their equipment apart from saws and splitter and they pay for fuel and 10 chains a year. we get everyother load, and do their fire wood for them. it works quite well.
  14. Venisons pound for a pound at the moment for us, or at least it was. Bin a while since i've bin able to go out and get anything:confused1:
  15. Not sure i wasnt with them but think it may have been a willow. Just lucky they didnt use it for cover or things could have taken a turn for the worse. Only damage done is the fact they are gonna have to clear up all the trees blown into the river.
  16. Few of the other fishery lads were hit aswell whilst in the river doing some weed clearing. The size of that root plate is some scary stuff!
  17. Scratch that last post just read this mushroom is in north america so cant be that.
  18. The smaller mushroom from the first post could be a young Mycena delicatella?
  19. I studied a HND in conservation at Aberystwyth and i would throughly recommend it although i would also recommend you dont do work experience with the RSPB. aber is a great town with plenty to do if you like the outdoors, it also boasts the best reputation for the type of course they offer. oh yeah and join the rugby league team and you cant go wrong. All the best mate Owain:thumbup:
  20. Well i thought that may be the case but it only seemed to be coloured on the wood that was damaged by the fungi leading me to think it was the fungi that caused it. :confused1:
  21. Had a garden clearance job over my half term taking out a few bushes until one thing caught my eye when removing the lilac bush. The plant wasnt in great shape and it soon became apparent there was a purple stain runnning through the affected limbs surrounding some rot. after further investigation i found that smaller roots had also bin stained this lilac colour and i found a bracket barely holding onto the stem with new fungal growth showing through and old wound. was wondering if anyone could shed some light on whether this was the colouration caused by the fungus or a reaction by the plant? Owain stem showing rot and purple colouration New fungal growth Stained roots Old bracket Lace like rhizomes found on base of stem
  22. If your about one weekend in the near future i'd definitely appreciate coming round to have a look? Owain
  23. Im based down the road in thame and will be looking for some work in june when i finish my NC Arb (Bit of a delay i know). But if you havnt found anyone by then im sure to be interested. Owain
  24. I heard this story and from what i heard it was a confiscated firearm and the guy was loading what he thought were blanks into the gun! Now im not exactly familiar with pistols but i think i know a blank from a real bullet. So anyway he points it at the chap fires and low and behold he recieves a massive stomach wound! for a supposedly trained firearms user this seems to be a mistake beyond measure! I wonder whether it was a couple of amatuers messing around and thames valley police didnt quite want to admit that a couple of 999 operators manged to get hold of firearms!
