  5. Good looking little bear!
  6. Thats a great concept one I will have to try in the future, nice one
  7. The wood had been cut quite a long time, so that and the oil fingers crossed. I did have it sitting in my boiler house too.
  8. My latest work, carved in Macrocarpa tools used: Dolmar 115 Stihl 114 electric with carving bar Dremel assorted saburr tips Sealey power file Drum Sanders And hand sanding Finish is acrylic washes to give the greens and burning. Danish oil and top coated with 5 bars of bees wax. Eyes are Glass taxidermy grade
  9. I use the Proxon with the circular mini chainsaw bit and could not live without it. Used it for fine detail in areas that are difficult to get to, it's not the most powerful tool and it does have an on/off switch that can be turned on and off by accident so be careful. Never get complacent when using sharp tools
  10. Always burn in my initials and the year I carved it using a hot iron
  11. I like that very good
  12. My best advice would be to trawl the net for photos, get as many as you can from different angles. Print them off and study them, take measurements and scale them up to get your proportions correct. When carving I find it helps to frequently step back and see how it looks, trial and error after that, remember you cannot put the wood back on lol
  13. Same here I am never satisfied with what I have created, I can always see something I do not like about a piece. That said you have to stop somewhere or there wouldn't be any wood left As for things I want to carve the list is too long for now if I finish the Herons piece and the 7' Dragon I will be satisfied, until the next idea:thumbup:
  14. That is a very good Barn Owl face, excellent proportions! Well done
  15. Great face very expressive
  16. Dude those are psychedelic magic! ::
  17. For finishing I always use clear Danish Oil after burning the gills. Adding a door and chimney goes down well. Try also owls pretty easy to carve
  18. I really like that came out well. Definition will be greatly improved again when you oil it. Barn owls are one of my favourite subjects..
  19. Thanks all for your seal of approval
  20. Not my usual subject, but the timber was a good shape for it
  21. Just finished a new piece A nest of Barn Owls, timber is beech
  22. I think it looks great, you can have too much detail
  23. I think it looks great, you can have too much detail
  24. Thats a cool idea... Oh is it Metric or old AF
  25. Nice work and you've got a large collection done too. With regards to finishing I personally avoid staining very green timber because of the cracks that appear leaving light coloured timber showing. Burning and coating in Danish oil is my preferred method. That said, timber that is well seasoned and less likely to cracking you can get away with pretty much any finish you like.
