  1. Could someone tell me what I should expect to pay for hardwood? At the moment I have just been using my own Spruce which cracks a fair bit and doesnt take detail easily. I have found a guy who has some hardwoods but I havent a clue what is a good price to pay
  2. New to chainsaws and carving could the guys who know tell me, of these two makes which is best for carving and has the best range of carving bars available for them? Or are there other makes which are better?
  3. My second attempt at a Barn owl, I think I got my style confused part way through lol
  4. Maybe someone in the States will have them I will do some surfing, thanks any way.
  5. Does anyone know where or indeed if one is available to fit the electric Stihl 140?
  6. That is without doubt a truly wonderful work of art... Can you tell me, where do you get your ideas from? My biggest failing is being faced with a lump of stump or log and my mind going blank!!! and then out pops yet another bear lol
  7. I dont mind at all thank you for taking the time. I do like the pics you posted, I will save them for future reference material. I have literally stacks of photos I have saved, but somehow my bears never come out like them lol
  8. LOL he was supposed to be stood up looking, ah well maybe the next one I will crack it...
  9. My Second attempt at bear carving, its very hard getting them to actually look like bears. The heads look more like dogs lol
  10. They are still selling them Classic Hand Tools Limited - The Merlin Mini Grinder. I bought one the same as is being used on the clip, mine was called the Merlin Set and came in a green plastic case with a chainsaw disc, bur, sanding disc and a few other discs. They are brilliant little machines very handy for all kinds of fast roughing out. Dont know if pasting a link is against the rules
  11. I agree good looking, right proportions can make or break a carving
  12. Am I right in thinking that with modern two stroke oils it ok to use 50/1 on old saws like the Sachs Dolmar?
  13. I think if I were to sell it would have to go on ebay because I have no idea of its value..
  14. Just picked this up and as I said before I dont know anything about saws. Any ideas how old this is or if they were any good? The saw as you see in the photos appears to be unused it still has the shops label on it which would have wore off in the first ten minutes of use. I know it doesnt have the power to mill big stuff should I sell it and put it towards a newer more powerful saw? Its really nice though has a very well made feel to it and bags of compression.
  15. Thank you all for the advice lots to think about
  16. I want it to mill up a 30' length of Spruce and a few other bits of Acacia, doesnt sound like a good idea then. The guys says its a good runner but who knows eh? I will give it a miss thanks for the advice
  17. I am not really up on chainsaws any advice on the Stihl 048 would be appreciated. I have been offered a 048 for £150 would that be a waste of money?
  18. Otter carved from yellow tulip we had taken down in the garden, its 3 pieces, the otter, branch and base. Thats all my carving to date, back to the workshop erecting..
  19. This one and the otter, my wife has nabbed (grandchildren took the bear home), but I hope to be doing more of the same. I am just in the middle of erecting a small workshop so i havent carved for a few weeks but I intend to lol
  20. This was carved with the Ryobi right up to the detail stage then I finished it with chisels. In all I have completed 3 carvings now my last one is of an otter swimming over trout, got a bit carried away. I know they are not true chainsaw only but I do most of the work with the Ryobi.
  21. Hi thanks for all your very nice comments! The book is "Chainsaw Carving a Bear" by Jamie Doeren, its not great some of it you have to use your imagination because there are not enough photos, better than nothing though. I used a cheap Ryobi 18", its great for carving because the bar tip is so small, I also have a few hand chisels I used as well.
  22. Looks like Winnie the Poo gone wrong lol
  23. This is my first attempt at a bear, it just needs the welcome sign or what ever put on his paws
