  1. Nice splice, is that ocean vectran cord? Like the eyes on the inside of the pulley before clipping in, hadn't even crossed my mind!
  2. So, I spent ages splicing up some Marlow Aeris a couple of weeks back for my new lanyard and was really liking it, daisy chained up nicely to keep it out of the way, light, soft yada yada yada... Until yesterday when about a foot from the spliced end (3.5 M length so not enough to resplice) I discovered a nick, no idea how it got there, but there it is and LOLER coming up so, new lanyard time, again! Dont fancy the Aeris splice again but liked the features of that rope so anyone any suggestions?? Dug out a grillion at work so something compatible with that perhaps??
  3. Your gonna have to lay it all out, take a pic with your grinning mug alongside it and post it up here! Well done bud!
  4. 'more shine than a L'Oreal advert' that made me chuckle! Great bit of craftsmanship there, well done.
  5. They were the guys who came through, driver was a chap called Bruce who my boss has worked with a few times in the past. Another company who didn't get the work said they'd have to send a rep out to look at it first and the soonest that could happen would be middle of next week!!
  6. Wasnt sure so googled it Cellulitis - NHS Choices Sounds like you're right Ben, maybe I'll take it more seriously next time too, I've had this kind of reaction 4 or 5 times in the last 12 months!
  7. Thanks Jon, it was a team effort, we had a very good crane driver and my boss Chris did the cutting, I just got lifted in to sling the thing up!
  8. Bang on the money Jon, trying to find a crane at midday on a Friday afternoon after 3 days of wind when they've not been able to lift and so have a backlog of work already...! We found one, lifted it back upright, cut at the base, lifted it over the corner of the house, laid out in the front garden, processed and removed just by last light. Good fun and did my first man lift on it so a great end to a very busy, challenging and fun week.
  9. Completely forgot I'd started this thread, must have been that glass of port with the cheese!! Entertaining reading guys and my mate is now a little wiser about what he's serving his cheese on, well, one of two possibilities anyway Happy New Year all!
  10. We were called out to this Doozy Friday Lunchtime, nice end to a week consisting exclusively of emergency work!
  11. I get a similar reaction to what I've always thought were horsefly bites, never paid it much attention as it usually goes down after 3 days, but someone recently mentioned cellulitis to me, is that why you got the antibiotics? How long have you had the swelling ??
  12. Friend of mine got this for Christmas, any thoughts?
  13. I saw some in the shop the other day when picking up bits and it definitely looked more like a double braid or 16 strand splice but the email which came from marrow at the beginning o this thread described pretty much the heavy duty kernmantle splice you can find on neropes. Is there any reason why treating this like a 16 strand splice but with a 24 strand cover wouldn't work?
  14. As an employee I'll vouch for that. Its a two way street and for both employers and employees you get out what you put in. This was the first time I've ever had a Christmas bonus, they were a mythical entity to me until now so this year I was chuffed to nuts to get it and I'll be working just as hard in the New Year knowing that it doesn't go un-noticed.
  15. Couldn't have suited me better! I was in the car heading up North by 3.15 and pint in hand with my brother by 9. Was good to meet you Ciaran even if it was just for the couple of days!
  16. Thanks WeeDee, I really thought it had me stumped and it was your suggestion to bury it in sections which got it done so thank you again! Think I'll be sticking to double braids and 16 strand dog leads from now on, I've got a fair list to catch up on now!
  17. Much swearing and wrecked hands later and it's done (save for taper and stitch the empty jacket in the lock whip stitching) Thanks for all the help guys, not sure I'll be doing this one again anytime soon!!
  18. Cool, well I've started the bury again with a longer taper and got about an inch into the jacket and it's jammed again but I think with some bending and twisting and gentle massage it might go
  19. Drew - tha kafir the step by step, I like the idea of taping the core strands when you divide them in half as I struggled with only 10 fingers to not get them all tangled!! I hadn't tried burying the core a few strands at a time, might try that but yes I have milked plenty of cover and it'd super baggy. I chose aeris as I wanted to really streamline my lanyard and this was light thin rope which had a good review (an a darn sight cheaper than some others!) Oh and Drew, do you get all the core strands to where you want them before snugging it all up to give the finished eye??
  20. scratch that, I'm having a nightmare burying the last bit of the core using a wire fid as i can't get enough taper to allow the bury, any tips before I go and buy a push fid to try?
  21. So this is a far a I've got so far, ended up with lots more core as I milked the cover back to give myself enough wriggle room and now have quite a baggy jacket on the standing end for burying the remainding core. Not the easiest splice but so far no wrecked hands and no yanking or swearing, yet!!
  22. Cool, well having got my head around this I guess all I've got to do now is give it a bash...
  23. Yeah I had thought that leaving all that slack core to pull through as per the pictures wouldn't work as the core would be under too much friction. I had read you can bury the core back into the empty jacket and then bury that back in under the eye but to me that seems like a lot of material to be burying together. When whipping, do you whip right up to the V of the eye and then down beyond the cutoff point of the cover, how many locking stitches do you need? I guess cutting off the cover doesn't sit in my head right though I know looking at the splice there will be plenty enough strength in it to not worry about that.
  24. Bump. Anybody have any suggestions how much to taper the core and cover (step6 neropes heavy duty eye splice) if I'm burying the core into the cover and then the core and cover back into the rope below the eye?? Something just doesn't make me want to cut the empty cover off as per neropes and just lock and whip it. Also, making a small eye for a small carab, got a feelin this is going to make a tricky splice trickier, any tips on when and what to milk or big no no's?
