  1. I tend to where gortex bottoms and to keep my trousers dry but no top, this keeps you cool but obviously you get wet so i where thin neoprene t shirts that dont hold must moisture and have a dry towel and fleece in the van to keep warm when you stop to have a nice cup of tea :-) But the down part is when you start again you have to put ure wet T-shirt back on :-( (also known to military guys as "wet and dry drills")
  2. Yes youre right its 1 day every 2 weeks, for me I wish it was allot more as I struggle to self teach but thats just me. As the guy said befor I would ring keely at tree life, she will be more then happy to help, dont ring ABC as they dont have a clue!! Cant find the number right now for you but you will find it online
  3. Ive just started the tech cert (now level 4 dip arb) with tree life, so far so good but it is early days yet!! if youre not onit now you will have to wait untill next year
  4. This may not apply for you as you have been registered in the past but when i registered for vat I was able to claim back vat on all purchases made in the past 4 years!!! If this is so then I would hang on u till you hit the fresh hold.
  5. I think that for me I find that 50% of reductions we carry out are un necessary, however the option is simple reduce the tree as well as you can and save it or tell the customer it is bad practice and fell it!! Yea you can recommend a re-plant but I've found people have good intentions do do this but don't actually get around to it. I would rather live in a city of badly managed trees then one with no trees at all!!
  6. Bristol Tree Surgery Gallery Hi this is a reduction we did last winter. I think the main battle is getting the customer to except that if they want to keep tne tree then little and often is the answer.
  7. lol well not every day but the odd spanner in the works to keep them on there toes does the job. I run on a "job and nock" basis once the works done they go home. some days thats at 14:00 and some days its 18:00 but it all balances out in the end. the point i was making is the guys that appreciate the work will work there socks off and the time wasters that dont will take the early finishes and run but then winge when they have to work late!
  8. I think the best way to find the right staff is a long trial period, take them on as a sub contractor and put them through there paces for at least 12 months, late finishes with no extra pay, hard jobs, working to deadlines and drum in high standards always applying more pressure. if there worth taking on then they will stand buy you, work there socks off and be grateful for the work, if not then there seal there own fate and off they trot. sounds harsh but its worked for me and ive got some great reliable blokes.
  9. Im livid with this story Its the one thing that drives me to the edge "young people expecting sympathy and an easy life, pleading that they are in an unfair state because they have been raised in a degraded area and for some reason that means there is no chance of employment for them". This situation needs to be attacked aggressively and instantly as the only reason it has spread and continues to do so is because the police is backing away and not attacking the "kids" as it happens. as a ex soldier I strongly disagree with letting the army deal with this sort of situation. soldiers are trained to go in to a hornets nest deal with the situation in one hit with full aggregation and using full force and then get the hell out asap. this approach would cause huge problems for the police to then deal with. its down to them to sort themselves with the skills they have been taught but arnt being allowed to use.
  10. it did sound very expensive to me to!! it is what it is tho I suppose, as long as the course intent and knowledge I gain from it justifies the money then I will be happy. maybe try get an employer to put up some of the cost and then regain the VAT if you haven't already tried that??
  11. Hi mate congrats for doing so well, I bet your glad its done and dusted now! I on the other hand have it all to come this year! And angry birds!! Im not to hot on all the tech jargon coming out in this thred but I do know that when i was in the army i spent ages looking for a good waterproof phone to use in the field ( as the radios then where useless) and my conclusion was that there just isnt the market for them so know body makes them! So i gave up and was just more careful not to get it wet!!!

I cant help with the apps you are looking for but I do use my ipad to help run my business and ive got to say i think its worth its weight in gold, eventually I would like to have a few and give them to the lads to take on jobs so i can up date them with job info, invoices and so on. I make notes on my notepad as jobs come in and i then copy and past them into my diary which is sync with google calendar which then syncs it to my mobile and laptop also thin means that all of my clients details and work quota is backed up on line so no worries if my ipad breaks!! Also I have found that pdf reader is great as I have downloaded all AFAG guides, generic risk assessments and also general info for customers like insurance docs and so on..... Also I have got myself a battery powered wireless printer so as I quote jobs I can print off quotes and invoices as I go and for a dyslexic git like me is really a life saver!! Any tricks im missing pleas let me know?? Long live the ipad :-)
  15. Ive met youre other half and she has feet thike big foot so them bags must be "girt massive" as we say in bristol!!
  16. lol that was a friend of mine (chriss the log) haha we dared him to do it for a pint and a pie..
  17. thanks allot, thats some sound advice hear and from all other posts to, im still trying to get a quotation from a builder so just trying to keep people happy in the knowledge that i am trying to resolve the situation as quickly and as fairly as posable. As soon as I Get a quote together for repair I will make the offer and leave it to them, if its refused then i will take youre good advise and hand it over. ive got more important things to spend my time doing then fighting with a un reasonable guy. and I think you may be right about the tree as this may explain the original claim for the wall! However what the picture doesnt show is the tree was actually about 10feet below as there is a retaining wall between the customer and neighbour. so altho tree root damage could be posable what is the chance of roots moving that much soil? Any way thats a hole different argument and not mine to have so il stay out of that one lol. thanks again all youre comments have helped to structure the way I handle this matter . and gave me chance to have a good winge :-)
  18. this is what I want to do but the problem is that if I was to re build it without additional supports it would again be unsafe and I would never do that! plus I dont think I would find a respectable builder who would ether. the alternative of course is to get 2 separate quotes: 1 to re build the wall we damaged and 2 to build a support to make the wall safe I pay for the wall and nothing more and they pay for any additional work that should have been done a long time before we where evan there!
  19. I know its not conservation area as a checked before works on the tree but Im not sure if the wall is listed, the owner has said that if it is re built he wants it back to the same hight which I found strange as it would just be re building a potential future problem! I think he has planes to build a structure from it!! im starting to think that insurance is the way forward now but ive gained some confidence in my case from some good comments made on hear that makes me feel like I should maybe put up more of a fight! it just comes down to pride over anything as this guy has been such a **** and i dont want to pass it to the insurance and let them pay him anymore then he deserves!! not that thats what insurance companies do lol!!
  20. pic of the wall fro neighbours side. the wall was gently touched in the top left corner and this was the result!
  21. I was very annoyed by the allegation of trespassing as I Always make a big effort to not enter anybody's garden without permission even if its just to pick up the odd stray brach or to. So to be accused of this after having permission from the occupant is wrong and it shows they are clutching at strews and finding every reason to point all fingers at me. Getting hold of a builder for a quote turns out to be harder than i thought lol!!! Anybody know any good builders in bristol??
  22. I would like to add that in the past I have forked out without any second thought for fence panels, pains of glass for green houses, patio slabs and evan a new shed. Im well aware that I have a responsibility when working on peoples property and my customers no that when they employ me it comes with total reassurance and security that the job will be completed to the highest of professional standards and any damage we are liable for WILL BE FIXED!! "Thats just how I roll" :-)
  23. You've hit the nail on the head there mate,Ive spoken to the insurance company and they have told me that there is no chance they would pay out as I can prove that the wall was in an unsafe state and the owner was aware of this for 12 months prior (his insurance company let it slip that he has been trying to claim to get it re built for over a year). Thats what makes it so frustrating because this guy has so obviously seen this situation as a god send and he can now point the finger at somebody because it has finally fell over ( maybe this is why he didn't tell the tenant about it!) But i would still have to pay insurance Excess for the surveyor and so on and also loos my no claims next year. Lol just cant win!
