  3. As the title suggests this thread is intended to focus on one tree a month. It will hopefully be a celebration of our Native Trees in order to aid us all in learning as much as possible about them. Our experiences working with them, fungal associations, pests and diseases, photographs, myths, legends and their place in the arts and culture. As said before a celebration and learning resource. I thought we could use the Celtic Tree Ogham calendar as a starter whose origins lie with the Celtic tribes who migrated to Britain around 700 – 500bc. Trees were venerated by the ancients for their many gifts which were a mainstay of peoples lifestyles. Everybody was born under a particular tree (the same as our own zodiac sign). Hopefully this thread will work and we can collate all sorts of useful and interesting information about our native trees. I hope there are a few of you who feel the same. This months tree covering the dates 15th May to 9th June is The Hawthorn (Crataegus Monogyna) Please feel free to add to previous Months.....Birch, Ash and Alder and Willow. Would be nice to have a few more contributions this month. Last month a bit slack (me also!!)

  15. went to st anns hill today.....a wooded hill which sits between the m25 and m3 motorways. Althopugh a constant hum emanating from these motorways a special place none the least. The info board gives a tiny bit of info on the hill "St.Ann's Hill takes its name form a chapel built around 1334 dedicated to St.Ann. Its original name was Eldebury (Oldbury) Hill with an old fort, and there are traces of old earthen defences on the top. The most notable resident of the Hill was the radical politician Charles Fox whose house was opposite the present main entrance. The hill was presented to the Local Authority by Baron Camrose of Longcross and opened by the Rt.Hon. Neville Chamberlain MP in June 1928
  16. that is brilliant.........would sit very nicely on 'the beauty of standing deadwood thread'!
