  1. i did the FdSc at college and learned loads. the tutors were spot on. if they didnt think you were any good theyd be upfront and say youre in the wrong profession. about 20 lads started the course and about 10 finished. if youre keen and you wanna learn then i think you can get a massive amount out of college and get a good grounding to make a start in the industry. its all about what you put in. some students would moan about having to learn 20 new species each week. wtf? youre doin a course about trees. in the practical side we'd be worked hard and pushed out of our comfort zones and not put under any illusion thats its a glory job, being paid millions for swinging around trees all day. obviously this type of work suits some and doesnt suit others, the ones that arent up to it leave quickly. there wasnt a single lad on that course who thought theyd come out of it as a top notch tree surgeon, its just a very good grounding to get started. the one thing i cant stand about this industry is the macho element. the best climbers ive worked with are the down to earth, relaxed, modest type who encourage the rookies instead of whinging at them for being slow. its a risky job so new climbers need to think things through more and double check what theyre doing.
  2. my cheap and cheerful GT.recon i get as much enjoyement out of this as i would with a 2 grand Kona. rode it up snowdon the other week.
  3. quality. did you make a video of that one ?
  4. how do you get a one handed man out of a tree? wave to him
  5. beautiful. grudgingly very envious

  8. cheers waz. no joy at fountains but not tried tilhill yet. lumberjack. dunno about 'desperate for tree surgeons', theres far fewer companies (obviously as theres far fewer people), but if youve got tickets youd have no probs finding work. they dont have the training and certification like us so alot of british lads go over and do ok for themselves. took me a while to save up for the flight but less than a week to find work when i was there. free digs too (in the bosses garage like but beggars cant be choosers). do it, best thing ive ever done. theres no way im goin back to painting and decorating after gettin a taste of tree work. anyway, i digress, anyone takin on?
  9. ello im fairly new to the industry and so struggling somewhat. ive about 18 months experience, ground and aerial work (incl 7 months in NZ) plus a year at college. tree work is all i wanna do and im gutted i didnt start earlier, when there was more work. coming from rock climbing stock, i am fit and strong and i love getting stuck in and working hard (heard it all before i know). If anyone can offer me advice on finding work, knows of anyone who might give me a chance, or, dare i say, could offer me a job please send me a pm. ill perform any duties (within reason) for 50 pound a day and would be willing to work a weeks free trial. I live in Bolton and will travel anywhere in the north west for work. cheers 07799356752

  11. why what happened in germany? excuse my ignorance
  12. pretty rural part of lancashire. lots of little towns dotted about (garstang/longridge) and lots of countyside/woodland. the pennine moors are close by and the lake district national park isnt too far away. the college is about a 20/30 minute drive from preston city centre.
  13. im half way through fdsc arb there. great college. good resources, very very good tutors (on the whole), well organized. the library however doubles as a creche and you often need to fight your way through hoards of little pikie whippersnappers on agricultural day release. arb department is one of, if not the best in the country... so they claim.
  14. im in bolton but willing to travel
