I didnt know he did external kilning, i will have a load of work for him now!! I have always used Tino, but his kiln isnt really going anymore since he moved.

[Middle English heresie, from Old French, from Late Latin haeresis, from Late Greek hairesis, from Greek, a choosing, faction, from haireisthai, to choose, middle voice of hairein, to take.] That answer your question joe?
  4. Well you tube was a bit quicker than usual, so here are some vids of loading etc. thanks for watching guys. More to come. Ill post some of crane recovering root ball from harbour floor, and in a week or so of the final milling:001_smile: [ame= ] [/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Csnsh6UV9A]YouTube - Burr oak in Mylor creek part 2[/ame]
  5. That is an impossible question mate. When i started out (12 years ago) i aked this question and was told 1 3/4". I did that and still have one or two boards now!!!! Leave the oak in the round and mill to order- or do lintels and fat slabs from the outer parts of the log, and some 30mm or 40mm slabs from the centre- these are basically quarter sawn and will have superb figuring. I have a total nightmare getting rid of beech, as do other sawmills in this county. I know one mill that gets rid of it in 3"x3" which becomes wedges in the dockyard for the dry docks. Sycamore is loved by kitchen makers, and is also naturally sterile, so is good for food bowls, chopping boards etc etc. When you have milled it, stand it on end for as long as you can.......or you run the very very real risk of ruining it (i speak from experience and a 2.5k loss!!!!) Or you could slab it all into fat slabs, get it in stick and resaw it to order. Sory if this gibberish is not much help, but it really is a hard question to answer. If you have loads of stock mill every log into a selection of sizes.
  6. Really cool job yeah...Dont know what the woodlouse thing was- there were loads of them living under the bark. I thought they were really funny and quite cool trilobytes.
  7. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it cut, once we scraped/ pulled the bark off. The wood was perfect about 2 inches in, and cut like green wood. The tree fell out of the bank about 25yrs ago, and has been 80% submerged at high tide, and exposed at low tide. Either way, it is absoloutely stunning burry oak. Cant wait to see how it looks when i mill it. There will be vids then too.
  8. Ill put up videos later/ tomorrow, and more pics. We have a crane organized for tomorrow morning to get the root ball off the bottom of tha harbour where we had to leave it.....
  9. The root ball was too haevy for the crane at any reach, so the boat driver(?) winched it onto the stern as you can see in the last set of pics, and moved it like that. After a few hours we got it all back to Mylor docks and unloaded..
  10. The story continues....went back to get the wood today. The boat is equipped with a 5 tonne crane, and a winch that is just enourmous. Its normal job is lifting granite rocks that boats are moored to off the sea bed. Started at about 9.30 am loading up the little dinghy that took me across to the tree, and finished loading the two logs onto the trailer at about 6 ish tonight. I will post the vids later when youtube has sorted them out. Heres some pics for now.
