  1. Hi guys, need some help. Good friend of mine has just rung asking what i know of stump grinders as he has just hired one from speedy and it is just creating smoke not grinding. I said i subbied it out every time to one of 2 people. The story unfolds....he is trying to do a job for his aunt as a favour, but is having no luck. She had 20 leylandii removed and the stumps which range from 12" to 24" diameter and are about 6" out of the ground are now left there. Thing is, her gardener of 2 years put his mates on the job (they havent been but he is pushing) and they quoted..........9k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it turns out the gardener is moving on and it looks very much like he is getting a big back hander. (Old lady, vulnerable etc). I had this sort of job done recently for hundreds not thousands. I need someone who can get in there and do the job for the right price. The stumps only have to be taken below ground level and then the lawn can go over them or whatever. The access is excellent- they are next to her driveway. He would dig them out (he has 13 ton swinger and 7.5 ton tipper) but he doesnt want to wreck the drive. PM me if you can help.
  2. This thread has got really interesting......I had this conversation earlier today......with a customer! I had GROSSLY underchatged, knowingly(the reasons are very dull) and he asked me if he could give me some money to which i replied i had given a price and would stick to it, to which he replied by saying that i have to make a profit or something like that. Well i stuck to my price, and cemented any future tree work with him, which includes accepting a £1200 price for a large ash removal. I have however once spoken to an existing client about a pricing balls-up and he met me half way between what i had said and what i said the price ought to have been. I explained that he was totally within his rights and there would be no problem if he declined, as i had made the mistake, and he offered halfway willingly, which i accepted. That was all done before i started though, which i think is the only time, if ever, you can do it, and like i say he was someone i had done a lot of work for over 3 years.
  3. Good old insurance companies:sneaky2: Like Mark(?) said , at least they arent just 'viewfinder' types:001_cool: 088 up the tree......seem to have been there a few times recently, which could explain why my left wrist is foooked:thumbdown: So has the truck met with all expectations after its re-vamp?
  4. It'll be very interesting to see what the stump looks like. Apologies if you've already said, but if the residents didn't want it down yet they're paying, who ordered the job?
  5. :sneaky2:Now i think here we have the nub of the true problem:lol:
  6. I really couldn't agree more with the earlier posts about kids. i was sent away to school when i was 11, and in my next school i saw my folks briefly on about 8 occasions during term other than one weekend and half term. During the holidays i only really saw him at wekends as he was generally working alot. Since my folks divorced about 9 years ago i have found myself getting to know my old man a lot more. I therefore find it very hard not to spend time with my son, and even at 9 years old i sometimes feel that i am missing so much when i do wekeends and long days.
  7. You need to make a total backup of your settings on a seperate hard drive and then you can go into the bios screens and use the backup from the backup partition, then reload your settings from the external hard drive. i periodically take my pc down to the workshop and blast the dust out with the compressor- just don't go to close to delicate bits. If the hardrive is getting hot it can seriously impair performance.
  8. It has been a bit of a privilege to have been involved with a piece of wood like that and to have it go to the Eden Project, and even more so to be involved from start to finish. They are going to come and interview me for the website, and use all or most of the pics and vids that i have, and they videoed the whole move from the moment the crane started unfolding at my place, to the moment he had folded it up again at the Eden Project. I think i shamelesslymade sure my logo'd sweatshirt was fully visible from time to time:blushing: I also got to ride in that Scania which is just awesome:thumbup:
  9. Probably ready for spitting and sizzling more like:lol:
  10. Yeah- thy've got this monster splitter to get through it:laugh1:
  11. Awesome aint it! crane's not bad either...
  12. Great pictures Rupe. That first pic in post 29 is pretty striking....a lot of sky all of a sudden. Look forward to lots more.
  13. And a few more.. There is talk of a tree trunk being required, or several possibly, big enough to hollow out so that kids can walk/crawl through it, so keep it in the backs of your minds when doing huuuge takedowns.....
  14. Well the Eden Project have finally been and picked up the burr today, and here she is in her final resting place. Come spring they should have a website all about it:thumbup:
  15. Have you carried out any maintenance such as a de-frag recently steve? That is an easy way to sort things out. You could try a system restore to before it went awry?
  16. There is a guy down at Gweek area who is selling green hemlock and spruce in one of those single axled unbraked ifor trailers for £80 a load.......yes, i said £80!!!:thumbdown:The trailer is about 5'x5'x1'deep. We should all put our prices up if thats the score!
